Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) has sailed into our living rooms thanks to Animal Planet's Whale Wars, a popular new series covering SSCS's controversial tactics opposing allegedly illegal Japanese whaling. I've been glued to each episode the past few weeks as SSCS crew sailed their ship, the Steve Irwin, to the Southern Oceans to fool with Japan's whaling fleet.

SSCS trys to foul props, they toss stink bombs on Japanese decks, they even put two SSCS volunteers onboard a Japanese whaler to deliver a personal message against whaling -- a publicity stunt that triggered buzz worldwide. Some call them pirates. If they are, then they're likely the first ever vegan pirates.

SSCS ships are vegan. Throw the last stink bomb, then head to the galley for mashed cauliflower and beans over brown rice. According to Captain Paul Watson, their vegan policy is not a PETA-thing (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), it's all about marine conservation, not protesting what people eat. Overfishing to Watson is a major biological holocaust against ocean life. He explains that 50 percent of the fish netted from the sea are converted into animal feed. Cats eat more tuna than all the world's seals. The crew members are conservationist vegans, not PETA vegans. I get it. Can you believe they actually throw stink bombs? But could you live on nothing but organic foods? Think about it -- you'd only have a handful or restaurants to choose from, and you might have to give up on some of your favourite dishes altogether. Could you do it?

One doctor in California did, and he recently spoke to the New York Times about his experiences on the all-organic diet. "This isn't a way of eating I could recommend to anybody else because it's so far off the beaten food grid," said Dr. Alan Greene. "It was much more challenging than I thought it would be, and I thought it would be tough. There were definitely days where there was nothing I could find that was organic." Still, he thinks it has improved his health. Read the full story here.

Your thoughts?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Healthy eating tip: Keep your produce fresh

Filed under: Vegetarian, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Fresh fruits and veggies are an essential part of a healthy diet. But once they're fresh, they're hard to keep that way -- know the rules of the produce aisle to keep your healthy snacks as tasty as possible:

Store on the counter: Basil, cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, tomatoes.

Store in the Fridge: Beets, blueberries, corn, radishes, raspberries, strawberries, yellow squash, zucchini.

Store in a cool, dry place: Butternut squash, yams, potatoes, onions.

Ripen on the counter, then refrigerate: Avocados, peaches, pears, kiwis.

Other things you can do: Keep produce in a perforate bag, and be sure to keep fruits and veggies in a separate drawer in the fridge. If you start to notice something close to spoiling, use it or freeze it.

Got any additional tips? But figuring out what kind of eggs to buy is becoming more and more daunting. Labels boasting free-range, cage-free and fortified might leave you scratching your head -- luckily The New York Times in shedding some light on what they all mean. Here are a few pointers:

Cage-free means the bird was kept out of a cage, but this doesn't mean they ever saw the light of day

Free-range means they had regular access to the outdoors, but 'outdoor' could mean a parking lot.

Pasture-raised means that at least some of their diet was natural (like greens and bugs.) But there's no regulation on how much of their diet needs to be natural.

Animal Welfare Approved means they spent all their time outdoors in a pesticide-free pasture. They are bathed and not fed any animal byproducts.

Aside from eating them like apples, as my three-year-old often chooses to do, you can make fresh tomato salad, salsa, or fresh tomato sauce.

Our very informal uncooked recipe goes something like this:

Chop a bunch of tomatoes and put them in a bowl.

Add enough balsamic vinegar and olive oil to cover them.

Stir fresh minced garlic and chopped fresh basil into the tomato mixture.

Season with seas salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Let marinate at room temperature at least 30 minutes before serving.

This is such a refreshing summer meal when served on pasta with a green salad, or a tasty snack as a bruschetta topping.
Continue reading 2 fresh tomato sauce recipes

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fit Beauty - von Natur Mineral Makeup is worth the price

Filed under: Natural Products, Organic, Vegetarian, Alternative & Green Health

I won't to lie to you -- I don't generally spend a lot of cash on makeup. I buy what you find at the drugstore, and even then, I look for a sale. My reasoning is simple -- I've never used something high end that felt like it was worth the price. If it's not all that different, why would I pay more?

There are reasons to pay more -- being particular about the ingredients is one, and of course, if it's can't-live-without-it amazing, I'm happy to save my pennies. But first, I need to know it's worth it.

I received samples of von Nature's Mineral Makeup Eye Colour, Sunset Light Face & Body Shimmer, and Magnolia Powder Foundation in the mail, and busted out my brushes immediately. For someone who is so involved in fashion and beauty, I have embarrassingly little experience with mineral makeup because it tends to cost more, and without trying it, I wasn't willing to spend the extra cash.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/">von Natur Mineral Makeup
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997720/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997723/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997721/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997724/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997722/">

Continue reading Fit Beauty - von Natur Mineral Makeup is worth the price

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Let's go back in time and eat like they did in the 1800s

Filed under: Vegetarian, Vitamins and Supplements, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
We've made tremendous progress in the fields of food, health and technology since the Victorian era. And yet we're not nearly as healthy overall as we were then. What gives?

Recent research is showing that not only did people live longer in the late 1800s, but they had strong immune systems too. Of course, there are several differences in the average Victorian diet compared to ours. Here's a rundown:

They ate more, around 4,500 calories a day for men and 3,000 for women.

But they also burned more calories, spending their working hours doing hard manual labour.

I had given up chips in lieu of a hard fit body. Fair exchange I thought! But then, there was this company telling me that they weren't going to fry all of their chips anymore, and yes ... there would be a healthier version for people like me. Yahoo!

Once again, snack lovers get to rejoice. The LesserEvil brand snack company has created an amazing variety of popcorns and krinkle potato sticks to make just about everyone drool. Most single servings contain about 110 calories of which about 20 come from fat. Not bad!

The Classic Kettle Corn is the perfect combination of sweet and salty, and thank goodness my bag was a single serving. If it weren't, I could have devoured nine! It was better than any of the junky stuff they sell at carnivals for sure! The Black and White Kettle Corn made my children's "movie night" here at home an even more special event. Good news for me ... I didn't feel the slightest bit bad about giving it to them. The Zesty Pizza Krinkle Sticks were odd to my husband and I though. Why? Because we could not figure out how they made them taste exactly like pizza! It was both weird and wonderful at the same time.

There's Yvonne Strahovski, who plays spy Sarah Walker on Chuck, and we had Angelina Jolie carrying Wanted. And, you might not have seen her yet, but Gabrielle Anwar is just as tough.

She plays the trigger happy ex-girlfriend to the lead character on USA's Burn Notice, and while I wouldn't go so far as to call her character a role model -- she's a little too good at making bombs for that -- she holds her own physically, especially considering she's quite petite. The use of chicle in chewing gum goes back to the late 1800s, but aside from being historically interesting, this natural gum has another benefit -- chicle is still a very important part of the economy in many rainforest areas. It's harvested by cutting into trees just deep enough to release the sap, but not so far as to cause any permanent damage to the trees, allowing these parts of the rainforest to be profitable without being cut down.

This gum is made from all natural ingredients and comes in a variety of flavors -- in fact, there's even a "Make Your Own Gum" option, which could be a fun project to do with your kids. Glee Gum contains no artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, or sweeteners, so if you want to chew on something you can feel good about, this might be just the thing!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

3 broccoli recipes: easy, cool, and stealthy

Filed under: Vegetarian, Healthy Recipes, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements

It's pretty hard to tell, with the mixed messages we are getting as consumers these days. The definitive study, though, tells us that not only is organic more nutritious, but it is better for the ground water and soil.

A few facts on organic foods:

they contain up to 90% more antioxidants than conventionally grown food

they've got higher levels of minerals

as cancer-fighters, they win the race

Seems as though we should always buy organic, with those stats. Due to availability -- and our budgets! -- buying everything organic may not be an option, and if we're looking to do a real service to the environment, buying what's available locally is a better choice.
Continue reading More tricks for buying organic foods wisely

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Healthy recipe: Quinoa with grilled zucchini, garbanzos and cumin

Filed under: Vegetarian, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
A delicious source of vegetarian protein?
Q. Hi Miss Fitzness, I'm a vegetarian, but still weigh 34 pounds more than I'd like to. What gives? I thought vegetarians were supposed to be skinny, and I hate being chubby! Meredith

A. Hello Meredith, Thanks for writing! Vegetarianism can have tons of benefits, and a trim physique can be one of them, if done right. Having said that ... it's very easy to go wrong as well. Here is the deal. Vegetarians don't necessarily eat all fruits and vegetables ... vegetarians just don't eat meat. There are tons of products that have no animal products in them, yet are still super high in calories and fat. Let's start with a short list of some vegetarian approved products:

Flour

Sugar

Oil

Frosting

Gummy Bears

Fresh, local veggies every week fit our healthy lifestyle, and we look forward to choosing fun recipes to use each week's harvest.

Lately, we've been getting red and golden beets, complete with rich, green beet greens still attached. Want to know our favorite easy recipes to use every part of the beet?

Beet Greens with Tamari
Simply saute your coarsely chopped beet greens and a clove or two of minced garlic in your favorite cooking oil, over medium heat until they turn bright green (about two minutes). Then, sprinkle tamari (or soy sauce or Bragg's) in the pan, about two teaspoons or so. Cook through, remove from heat, and serve.
Continue reading Cook with beets and the greens

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Healthy green bean salad recipe

Filed under: Vegetarian, Healthy Recipes, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Holy green beans, Batman! That is pretty much what my super-hero-obsessed three-year-old said when he saw how many green beans we picked this week at our CSA Farm.

In the interest of finding a healthy and exciting new recipe to try, I hit one of my favorite food sites, Epicurious, and found a recipe for Green Bean and Fennel Salad with Dill Pesto. A few quick alterations and we've got a dinner:

I'm leaving out the orzo (since my son is allergic to wheat) and using brown rice instead.

Double the amount of green beans? You bet!

Since we have an abundance of fresh basil, I'll opt for the traditional basil pesto.

I don't have white balsamic vinegar, so I'll use the regular type.

To accompany this green bean salad, I'll grill some free range chicken breasts with pesto.

I'm looking forward to trying this recipe with my alterations. How would you change Epicurious' original recipe?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
