Something you can take to work and eat for lunch? Something that will make a great dinner a second time around? If so, you'll want to properly store your food in the greenest of ways, says Jessica Jensen, co-founder of Low Impact Living. Here's how.

Use glass first. It can be used over and over and is easily recycled.

Go for aluminum foil next since it too can be recycled.

Opt for plastic containers before bags because they can be reused and some can be recycled. It's best to use as little plastic as possible, though, since it's made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resourse.

Last choice: Plastic wrap. It's only good for one-time uses and can't be recycled.

As Labor Day weekend platters of hamburgers, hot dogs, bbq'd chicken, corn, chips 'n dip, jell-o molds and brownies are shortly devoured, most will have no clue where the various foods come from. Also, the feast will likely be inhaled quickly so family members can return to the baggo game.

However the 40-50,000 people gathered for Slow Food Nation '08 in San Francisco this Labor Day weekend are doing things quite differently. Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic organization founded nearly 20 years ago to combat people's diminishing interest in the food they consume, where the ingredients come from, how food choices impact the globe, and even the disappearance of a slowly eaten, homemade meal around a sociable table.

Slow Food Nation '08 is the first-ever American gathering to support this nation's growing sustainable food movement, fostering the wider public's environmental connection to their food. Taste Pavilions feature food from across the country, leaders of the movement are sparking provocative learning and group discussion throughout the Food for Thought series and the Victory Garden is showcasing how World War II communities throughout America fed and supported themselves. Very cool. Here's the full schedule of eclectic events.

Our family's making a small contribution to the Slow Food movement -- my mom's making pesto right now with basil clipped from her garden as my niece tosses a salad with cherry tomatoes, peppers and green onions from our garden. I hope Michigan corn is on the menu tomorrow. Luckily we have no problem lingering forever tableside for colorful conversation, followed by a rousing game of midnight Monopoly ... after baggo, of course. Wishing you a memorable, perhaps slower Labor Day weekend everybody! Pic from slowfoodnation.org.

There's Yvonne Strahovski, who plays spy Sarah Walker on Chuck, and we had Angelina Jolie carrying Wanted. And, you might not have seen her yet, but Gabrielle Anwar is just as tough.

She plays the trigger happy ex-girlfriend to the lead character on USA's Burn Notice, and while I wouldn't go so far as to call her character a role model -- she's a little too good at making bombs for that -- she holds her own physically, especially considering she's quite petite. To get ready for her action-packed role, Gabriella adjusted her diet.

She said she cut out "foods with ingredients that I need a dictionary to define. Fitness isn't just about body fat and muscle mass. For many of us, being fit inside counts, too, which means trying to make the best possible choices from day to day -- best for ourselves, our families, and our planet. And it can get tiring sometimes, trying to determine whether you're better off purchasing sustainable Product X from Company A or slightly-used organic Product Y from Company B, but sustainable shopping just got a bit easier with WorldofGood.com.

WorldOfGood.com is an Ebay community that strives to be "your source for everything People Positive and Eco Positive." They want to provide a place where people can "create positive change through commerce, as part of a global community."

More and more people are interested in the effects their purchases make -- knowing you're buying items that meet your philosophical needs can bring you great peace of mind. If you want to see just how big an impact simple spending habits make on the world at large, check out the Smart Cart quiz. You'll be amazed (and slightly horrified, if you're anything like me!).
Filed under: Natural Products, Spirituality and Inspiration, Sustainable Community, Healthy Products

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

More tricks for buying organic foods wisely

What's the lowdown on buying organic? It's pretty hard to tell, with the mixed messages we are getting as consumers these days. The definitive study, though, tells us that not only is organic more nutritious, but it is better for the ground water and soil.

A few facts on organic foods:

they contain up to 90% more antioxidants than conventionally grown food

they've got higher levels of minerals

as cancer-fighters, they win the race

Seems as though we should always buy organic, with those stats. Due to availability -- and our budgets! -- buying everything organic may not be an option, and if we're looking to do a real service to the environment, buying what's available locally is a better choice.
Continue reading More tricks for buying organic foods wisely

Filed under: Food and Nutrition, General Health, Healthy Habits, Organic, Sustainable Community, Vegetarian

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Celebrity Fitzness Report: Age-Proof Your Body with Elizabeth Somer

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? A handful of other spin bikes are wired to generators. This army of green pedal power feeds battery banks capable of delivering electricity to the building. Cool!

The Green Microgym didn't stop there. They sport low-energy ceiling fans, a yoga room with cork flooring and local artwork, and solar-panel awnings. Perhaps not the best marketing move, they purposely do not offers showers to save on water-heating costs. Ugh, no showers? I'd spin an extra half an hour for a hot shower!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

3 ways to eat locally

You've undoubtedly heard plenty about the benefits of eating locally. It's good for the environment, you support your local community, the food is fresher, and you have more say in how your food is grown because you can talk to the people who grew it.

Fitness Magazine's Eat Green, Be Healthy section offered three ways to buy locally and eat fresh:

Take advantage of farmers' markets. If you're not sure whether there's a farmers' market near you, check your local paper, or head over to this website where you can find out which fruits and veggies are in season near you and find a farmers' market in your area.

Become a member of a Co-op. You might have to put in a large sum to begin with, but your resources will be pooled with other co-op members and you'll get farm fresh produce at a reduced rate. Find one near you by selecting "Grocery/Co-op" and filling in your zip here.

Connect directly with local farmers. This website allows you to see listings of farmers' markets, u-pick farms, and roadside produce stands by state.

But while American suburban sprawl doesn't naturally lend itself to walk-happy travel, $4.00/gallon gas is sparking some to slip on their sneakers to complete nearby errands.

Conveniently, Google Maps recently added a walking directions option to its website. Pop in your to/from and it'll spit out route, mileage and estimated time to walk to your destination.

Cool! According to Google Maps, my neighborhood grocery store is 1.4 miles away and should take 27 minutes to walk there. Ha -- I can walk faster than 3 mph! Maybe Google should add a 'jogging at X-mph' option, too. Now if only Americans could live in European-like villages with fresh, organic food markets scattered on street corners. Nothing wrong with Big Suburban dreaming, right?

Filed under: Fitness, Healthy Habits, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

All natural, homemade insect repellent

As a family, we like to get outdoors and enjoy natural surroundings. But there's one part of nature that we don't enjoy -- bugs. Whether buzzing in your ear or nibbling at your ankles, bugs can quickly ruin an outdoor activity. There are plenty of bug repellents out there -- effective ones at that -- but if spraying yourself or your family down with chemicals isn't your style, consider this homemade insect repellent bar instead.

You'll need to gather a few items, some likely from a health food store, but after that, putting the bar together is fairly quick. I'd make several at once, I think, then store them in handy places like the car, my backpack, the beach bag, etc. Though I'm certain a homemade bar won't repel bugs as well as a chemical spray, the peace of mind you'll get from using something natural and non-toxic might be worth a bite or two.
Filed under: Natural Products, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Activists want to see an organic food garden at the White House

We planted our first vegetable garden this past spring and enjoyed it so much that we just spent the weekend doubling its size for next year. With a very small financial investment and a little bit of physical labor, we've been able to contribute fresh, healthy, organic foods to our menu and teach our kids some lessons about food production as well.

Rising food costs, food safety concerns, and an increased awareness about environmental issues have lead to an increase in backyard gardening. And some food activists are hoping to encourage that trend by putting an organic garden on one of the most well-known lawns in Amercia ... The White House.

When OnDayOne.org asked citizens to share their ideas for a better world, Eat the View shot quickly to the top. Eat the View is a program that advocates the placement of edible landscapes in high visibility places. You don't get much more visible than the White House! Activists hope that by promoting these kinds of gardens, backyard gardeners will again be encouraged to pull out their seeds and hoes. The idea is, if people start growing more of their own food, there will be less pollution created by food miles, pesticides, and waste.

So will the next President grow a garden at the White House? Time will tell. Sustainable practices aren't a new idea at the Presidential home; in 1917, President Wilson replaced power lawn mowers with a herd of sheep.
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Presto pesto -- Great ways to try this summer treat

At the farmer's market today, I was able to buy three huge bunches of basil for three dollars... total. Food prices may be going up, but at the farm market, in-season means easy on the pocket book. After digging through my pantry for a few other staples, I had all the necessary ingredients for pesto. Not only is pesto a favorite summer treat, it freezes well, which means healthy, local meals for winter. And because it's essentially a raw dish (you'll need to cook the pasta or bread that you put it on), it's perfect treat for when the kitchen is just too hot to cook.

Pesto's base ingredients are basil, olive oil, walnuts, and garlic, which means that it's loaded with antioxidants and heart-healthy omega-3s. (Pesto lovers learn early that a little goes a long way. Not only is pesto quite oily, it also has a very strong taste.) But creative cooks need not stop there -- pesto is very forgiving and does well with substitutions.

If you think pesto might have a place on your menu, now is the time to try it. Here are four great ways to enjoy pesto this summer:

Fresh basil pesto

Low-fat pesto

Non-basil pestos

Sun-dried tomato pesto
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Sustainable Community

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How green is your workout?

You recycle, you turn off the lights, you're making conscious decisions every day to reduce your impact on the environment. So why, then, are you still driving your gas guzzler to the gym to walk or run on an electric treadmill?

If you're looking to green your workout, look no farther than 50plus.com and their tips on Earth-conscious workouts. They've got some great advice, including:

Walk or run in your neighborhood or nearby trails.

Keep the thermostat down during the winter months, and ward off the chills with calisthenics.

If you want to stay in, find a used stationary bike, which doesn't use electricity.

Rehydrate with a reusable water bottle, and ditch the bottled water habit for good.

Become an eco-runner and clean up the environment while you exercise.

Another great way to keep your physical activity green is to build it into your every day routine. Commute by bike and burn calories while saving on gas and reducing pollution. Do your errands on foot to get in your exercise, and avoid annoying traffic at the same time. Spend time out in your garden growing your own organic veggies and burn fat by hoeing those pesky weeds. Exercise doesn't have to be complicated and it can help you do your part at conserving natural resources at the same time.
Filed under: Fitness, Healthy Aging, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How green is your race event?

I love participating in races. I love the training (well, most of the time), I love the adrenaline, I love the camaraderie. Probably I'd love winning, if I ever did, but as it is, I just love being a part of the event. However, I don't love the impact these events generally have on the environment.

Think about it -- races create a large amount of trash (paper cups, water bottles), cause large numbers of people to travel, and what do you do with all that swag? Maybe you keep it and use it, but lots of people just throw it away. Races can be really wasteful.

Fortunately, they don't have to be. I do, and I cringe a bit when I head to my favourite salad bar, where the only takeout option is a non-reusable plastic container. Hey -- at least it's not Styrofoam. Not surprisingly, Styrofoam came out on the bottom of the list, meaning it's the worst thing you can take your food home in. Not only is it bad for the earth -- it's bad for your health too. In fact, many cities are trying to pass laws to outlaw Styrofoam. Maybe it's time you considered banning it from your own home or workplace.

They/we discussed the benefits that both a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude can have on today's Baby Boomers. I was happy to see two bright women, both 57 years old, who were able to close in on 60 without being or looking "old". While preserving their appearances and health, they still embrace and enjoy the gifts that come with aging.

Both Cheryl and Elizabeth personify the woman I hope to be when I am of similar age. Not only because they are gorgeous women who have defied the years physically though. Their healthy eating choices, chronic exercise habits, and joyous perspectives on life offer proof that with decent effort one can earn a long, productive, enjoyable life.

Beyond lessening their carbon footprint by paying attention to the origin of foods, they also enjoy fresher fare and support local farmers. 'Locavore' was even named the 2007 Word of the Year by the New Oxford American Dictionary!

Some locavores stick within a narrow 100-mile radius -- inspired by a Vancouver couple who wrote a book on their year-long 100-mile diet -- while others widen the net and eat regional foods or keep it simple and choose a handful of available foods to consistently purchase locally. I guess you could say there are no strict rules when it comes to being a locavore.

If that's the case, how about wearing a locavore hat for a meal or two this month? Head to your local farmer's market and buy ingredients for a locally-grown meal. Maybe a spring mix salad with veggies, sweet potatoes and slices of melon? You can also patronize a restaurant featuring locally-sourced meals, a new trend as chefs head to farmer's markets to purchase local foods to feature on the menu. Finally, don't miss the many tips and articles from writers nationwide over at the Eat Local Challenge blog -- it's a terrific, educational site.
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, General Health, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Decoding some shady green-speak

Everyone wants to be green these days, which of course is a good thing. But unfortunately for the unsuspecting consumer, green is being used somewhat duplictiously as a means of putting more green of a different kind into corporate coffers.

Men's Health takes a closer look at what some of the green language on packaging really means. Here's what they found...

CFC-FREE: Sometimes still found on bug spray, shaving creams, oven cleaners, and many other spray products, this claim is completely pointless -- CFCs have been banned from aerosols since 1978.

ALL NATURAL: Perhaps one of the most ambiguous phrases used in green-speak. As the article states, whatever it actually means, it definitely doesn't guarantee that it's safe.

Continue reading Decoding some shady green-speak

Filed under: Eco-Travel, General Health, Sustainable Community

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
