But what about the hours in between? It's during those times, which typically fall around the normal school lunch period, that many kids make their own dietary choices. And, as a recent CDC study discovered, most high schools aren't offering the type of healthy choices you are at home.

A CDC study of 36 states found that in some states, it's very easy for teens to get unhealthy junk food both in their lunch lines or throughout the day in vending machines.

Amazingly, this is actually an improvement over recent years. In a related study, the percentage of high schools selling junk food during lunch periods dropped from 53 percent in 2004 to about 37 percent in 2006. However, there was not any change in the percentage of high schools selling junk food during non lunchtime hours, such as candy in vending machines or in the school store.
Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Women's Health, Men's Health, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

One of these fat cells is not like the other

We all have body fat. It's necessary for proper body function. While a healthy percentage of body fat varies greatly, according to the American College of Sports Medicine a healthy range for women under 40 is 20-35%, for men 8-22%. (The ranges change for those over 40 and for fitness standards.)

But a recent study reveals that one fat cell isn't necessarily like another. In obese people, fat cells appear "sick."

Compared to fat cells taken from lean people, the fat cells from obese people were deficient in several ways. For example, the endoplasmic reticulum -- which helps cells synthesize proteins -- was stressed in the fat cells of obese people. This stress of the endoplasmic reticulum could inhibit or change the body's production of protein and could lead to insulin resistance (a contributing factor for obesity).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fitz's Cool Tools: LesserEvil Snacks - Kettle Corn and Potato Sticks

Remember how happy we all felt when Lay's introduced Baked Potato Chips? I do. It was a feeling of relief for me. I had given up chips in lieu of a hard fit body. Fair exchange I thought! But then, there was this company telling me that they weren't going to fry all of their chips anymore, and yes ... there would be a healthier version for people like me. Yahoo!

Once again, snack lovers get to rejoice. The LesserEvil brand snack company has created an amazing variety of popcorns and krinkle potato sticks to make just about everyone drool. Most single servings contain about 110 calories of which about 20 come from fat. Not bad!

The Classic Kettle Corn is the perfect combination of sweet and salty, and thank goodness my bag was a single serving. If it weren't, I could have devoured nine! It was better than any of the junky stuff they sell at carnivals for sure! The Black and White Kettle Corn made my children's "movie night" here at home an even more special event. Good news for me ... I didn't feel the slightest bit bad about giving it to them. The Zesty Pizza Krinkle Sticks were odd to my husband and I though. Why? Because we could not figure out how they made them taste exactly like pizza! It was both weird and wonderful at the same time.

Many are high in sugar and sodium, while some also contain a great deal of unhealthy fat. But could there possibly be something else in Chinese food that causes weight gain? There is indeed, say researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and it may be something you were aware of.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer frequently used in Asian cuisine, can cause you to gain weight, new research published in the journal Obesity suggests. Rural Chinese men and women who consumed the most MSG were more than twice as likely to be overweight than their peers who didn't use the additive.

In the past, no definitive connection between MSG and weight gain in humans could be made, primarily because it was considered to difficult to measure the intake of the additive from processed foods. However, the UNC research team devised a method of analyzing certain data, which for the first time provided a clearer picture on the possible MSG/weight gain link. and use for 5 or more years was associated with an 80 percent increase in risk of the disease; both of these risk estimates were statistically significant."

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Men's Health, HealthWatch, Obesity
<h6 style="clear: both; Confused? I know what you're thinking: How does one factor have anything to do with the other? Don't worry; there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.

It's not so much about the age of your house--it's about the age of your neighbourhood. You see, old neighbourhoods tend to be more walkable, whereas newer neighbourhoods tend to be built around this unfortunate habit we've developed of driving everywhere. And not so surprisingly, how walkable a neighbourhood is has a direct impact on the levels of obesity in the area.

So next time you're in the market for a house, consider buying into a older neighbourhood--or at least one where you can walk to the store.

Filed under: Healthy Habits, Healthy Home, Healthy Places, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Too fat to be executed?

Obesity increases your chance of an early death. Well, in most cases, anyway. For Richard Cooey, being obese might just save his life.

Cooey, 41, was sentenced to death in April for the rape and murder of two women, but claims he's too fat to be executed. At 5'7 and 276 lbs (and a BMI of 43.2!), Cooey claims the executioners would have too difficult a time finding his veins. Additionally, he's on a migraine medication that could affect how his body processed the anesthesia he wold receive prior to being executed.

Does this mean we will see a rapid increase in the average BMI of prison inmates across the world? Only time will tell.

What do you think of Cooey's defense?
Filed under: Health in the Media, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Four fitness moves to start your day off right

Women's Health magazine just sent me a release with some fun tips entailed, and I thought I'd share this one with you. We're talking about Fructose, not to be confused with naturally-occurring glucose. According to the New York Times, regular sugar is normally processed by the liver, which acts as a sort of 'traffic cop' and directs the sugar where to go. But fructose by-passes the liver and heads straight to your hips in the form of unhealthy fat.

I know what you're wondering: Why would anyone eat fructose? The answer is simple -- it's everywhere. It's cheaper than sugar, so many food manufacturers use it. It's your responsibility to read the labels and make sure you're avoiding this tasty poison.
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How can a full English breakfast kill you? That's just what happens when a meal is made up of fried eggs, fried bacon, fried hash browns, fried tomatoes and--good lord--fried bread (though to be fair, the breakfast is also served with baked beans, which are hopefully not fried as well).

But while proponents of the fry-up may look towards any kind of benefit in the menu -- protein! healthy egg whites! -- it's clear that the full English does more harm than good. Here's what's wrong with it:

It increases your risk for bowel cancer by 63%, according to recent reports.

It also significantly increases your risk of obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, heart disease and a number of other killer ailments.

I'll say it again: Moderation. No one died from eating a full English fry-up once in their life, but having a meal of these proportions every day can literally kill you. Proceed with caution.

Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fitness for every body

In what by this point seems like a past life, I was at one time a personal trainer. And it was during those couple of years that I met some truly inspirational people, many of which had never before stepped foot in a gym. Why? Because they felt as though they were too heavy to work out. Seems almost counter-intuitive, doesn't it? Yet, when you factor in the greater difficulty and the understandable feelings of insecurity, reluctance of this kind begins to make perfect sense.

So for those you remarkable folks out there who are looking to start a workout, but wonder if there are any tips a heavier person should be aware of, here are I few I feel are worth mentioning:

Don't starve yourself. Heavier people tend to burn calories more quickly than skinny people, so you do not want to deny yourself the fuel you need to complete your workouts.

Drink plenty of water. Bigger people tend to sweat quite a bit, which means that they are losing plenty of water. Be sure to replenish that lost water and then-some.

Continue reading Fitness for every body

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Learn to Jump Rope with Fitz!

Check out this quick video to learn all you need to know about mastering the jump rope.
Q. Hey Fitz, My name is Sarah and I'm almost 16. I have always been involved with sports including: hockey, basketball, soccer and you name it! Now that I am older, I have slowed down a bit and only play basketball for high school and travel. This is what is bothering me: I can't seem to run as long as I used to. I get tired easily and run out of breath. I'm not fat or anything, and I am even really fast. But by the time I run one length of the court I'm pretty much dead. What am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to change this? It seems like I get more out of breathe each season. Thanks, Sarah

A. Hi Sarah, Thanks for writing. I have two thoughts on what may be happening with you, the first being more probable than the last. Most likely, you've just become out of shape. That doesn't mean you're obese or in horrible shape, it just may mean you're not capable of doing as much as you were two years ago when you were involved in three sports! You take pride in the fact that you run fast. That's great! But, the fact that you like to go all out probably makes you more likely to suck wind at the end of one lap.

And though frequent high blood sugars alone can be detrimental to someone's health, it's oftentimes the associated complications of type 2 diabetes that take quite a toll on people's lives.

A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine revealed that diabetes (both type 1 and type 2) complications can take up to eight years off a person's life. In particular, people with diabetes face an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the study. Researchers found that women with diabetes developed cardiovascular disease 8.4 years sooner than women without diabetes. Consequently, women aged 50 and older with diabetes lived 8.2 fewer years than people without the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in the permanent destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, an occurrence that happens for reasons unrelated to diet, exercise, or any other known factor. Type 2 diabetes, however, can many times be prevented or controlled with proper diet and regular exercise.

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fat deserves much better

Fat. Talk about a word that unjustly carries a negative connotation. When someone is overweight, they are considered "fat." When a food is unhealthy, this appellation is typically assigned because of how much "fat" it contains. And when the likelihood of something taking place is low, you're told it's a "fat" chance. Poor fat -- it deserves much better than this.

For all the fat shunners out there, it's important to know that not all fats are bad; in fact, most are essential to total body health. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are probably among the best examples. Fatty fish, flaxseed oil, dark leafy greens, walnuts, wheat germ, and hempseeds all contain EFAs, which cannot be created by the body and must therefore be obtained from diet. Monounsaturated fats -- such as olive and canola oils, almonds, avocados, and pecans -- are incredibly healthy fats, as are some polyunsaturated fats, such as sesame and sunflower oils.

The fats you want to steer clear of as much as possible are saturated fats (butter, shortening, lard, etc.), trans fats (hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) and fake fats, such as Olean and Olestra. It's because of these fats that "fat" has gotten such a bad name.
Filed under: Women's Health, Men's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, HealthWatch, Cellulite, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Poop away that back pain!

Well this is one of those subjects, that I, even with all of my degrees and such ... I just can't wrap my head around explaining it perfectly to you.
Let's just put it this way, a combination of: fruit, gas, fermentation, constipation, pelvic rotation and inflammation can be causing your back pain. I don't think this article will provide the answer to everyone's back pain, but for some ... maybe so!

The article even suggests that a "pooping situation" or "lack of pooping situation" might be responsible for weight gain. So! Without further a-doodoo, click here.

More or less, a healthy snack is something that will tide you over until your next meal, keeping you properly satiated until then. It is also something that is relatively low in calories, but still has a good amount of nutritional value.

Rather than continuing to talk about what makes a snack healthy, I'm sure you'd prefer to instead learn about some actual healthy snacks!! Try these on for size (each contains 200 calories or less):

Reduced-fat popcorn and 1/3 cup of dried fruit

1/2 cup of low-fat cottage cheese and 2tbs of low-sugar jelly or jam

Single servings of many different types of fruits

2 graham cracker squares with 2tsp of natural peanut butter and apple slices

Cereal bar and 1 cup of light yogurt

Mozzarella cheese stick, 5 baby carrots and 5 celery sticks with 1/4 cup of fat-free black bean dip

This isn't a scientific fact, but merely an astute observation. Don't agree? Think about the last time you ate at a buffet. Did you eat more than you usually do?

Now for the scientific facts. According a study published in the journal Eating Behaviors, dieters who were allowed to eat whatever snack they wanted consumed more calories each week than those who were restricted to one type.

Use this logic to your advantage. Whatever it is you crave the most, go for it -- but only it. For example, if your weakness happens to be frozen Snicker bars, avoid having cake, cookies, and Doritos lying around, too. Chances are, you'll soon grow a bit tired of eating the Snicker bars all the time, making you less likely to reach for them when you have an urge to snack. And, because you don't have those other unhealthy treats around, you'll reach for what you do have: healthy snacks.

Filed under: Fitness, Healthy Home, Women's Health, Men's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, HealthWatch, Obesity

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Celebrity Fitzness Report: Age-Proof Your Body with Elizabeth Somer

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives?
