You go to the gym before work, shower, and put on your slip-on shoes. But then, halfway through the day, there's a distinct funk coming from beneath your desk -- you've got some stinky feet!

There are plenty of solutions, like wearing shoes with socks, or pouring powder into your shoes. However, I've found something better -- Verikira's Paraben-free Fresh Feet Foot Crème. It's 82 percent organic and contains vinegar, which is one of the best cures for funky feet you can find. But your feet won't smell like vinegar -- it also uses essential oils of patchouli, tee tree, thyme, basil, geranium, and cinnamon.

The best part? It totally works! I put it on in the morning, and then, whether I work outside, sweating in my dirty sandals, or hit the gym, soaking my gym socks with sweat, my feet don't stink. And, at the risk of entering TMI territory, let me say that this has never been the case for me.
Continue reading Stinky Feet? I buy what you find at the drugstore, and even then, I look for a sale. My reasoning is simple -- I've never used something high end that felt like it was worth the price. If it's not all that different, why would I pay more?

There are reasons to pay more -- being particular about the ingredients is one, and of course, if it's can't-live-without-it amazing, I'm happy to save my pennies. But first, I need to know it's worth it.

I received samples of von Nature's Mineral Makeup Eye Colour, Sunset Light Face & Body Shimmer, and Magnolia Powder Foundation in the mail, and busted out my brushes immediately. For someone who is so involved in fashion and beauty, I have embarrassingly little experience with mineral makeup because it tends to cost more, and without trying it, I wasn't willing to spend the extra cash.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/">von Natur Mineral Makeup
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997720/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997723/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997721/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997724/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/von-natur-mineral-makeup/997722/">

Continue reading Fit Beauty - von Natur Mineral Makeup is worth the price

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Be wary of Ayurvedic medicines

Filed under: Natural Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Alternative medicine may not always works as effectively as traditional western medicine, but they can't harm you, right? Not true. Recent studies recently found that one in five Ayruvedic medicines contains poisonous metallics like lead, arsenic and mercury.

Of hundreds of Ayurvedic remedies purchased from 25 different websites in the USA and India, 21% contained detectable levels of at least one of these metals, and of that 21%, half had higher levels than would be considered healthy.

Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient practice that promotes overall health using a balance of medicine, meditation, exercise and diet, and while it can be part of a healthy lifestyle, it's always a good idea to talk to your doctor first before taking any kind of remedy, natural or not.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Poop away that back pain!

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Natural Beauty, Natural Products, HealthWatch, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

Well this is one of those subjects, that I, even with all of my degrees and such ... I just can't wrap my head around explaining it perfectly to you.
Let's just put it this way, a combination of: fruit, gas, fermentation, constipation, pelvic rotation and inflammation can be causing your back pain. I don't think this article will provide the answer to everyone's back pain, but for some ... maybe so!

The article even suggests that a "pooping situation" or "lack of pooping situation" might be responsible for weight gain. So! Without further a-doodoo, click here.

I have plenty of friends who like nothing more than to soak in a hot bath for half an hour, while others want to get in and out of the shower as quickly as possible. I fall somewhere in between -- there are times when my muscles are screaming for a hot shower, and I take a little longer than normal, but there are quite a few times I'm in and out in very little time.

What doesn't change, however, is my love of good products. What's a shower (or a bath) without a shampoo that smells amazing, or a soap that's totally invigorating? And, of course, it has to feel great on my skin.

Lately I've been hearing a lot about Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps. The company has been around for 60 years, though only recently have they gone from being a cult favorite natural food store brand to being embraced by the masses. The products are completely eco-friendly and certified organic as well as fair trade certified. Besides all that goodness, there are over 30,000 words written on the labels of all the products epitomizing the founder's beliefs -- makes for good reading!

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/">Good for you, good for the planet
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/941180/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/941181/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/941178/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/941183/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/good-for-you-good-for-the-planet/941179/">

Continue reading Fit Beauty: Natural beauty products that make you feel great

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Are you washing your face with lighter fluid?

Filed under: Natural Products, Alternative & Green Health

Ever read the ingredients on your beauty products? Our friends over at The Beauty Brains recently did and found that one Oil of Olay product contained a surprising ingredient--Butane, aka that stuff that goes into cigarette lighters.

But is washing your face in butane safe? The brains seem to think so -- while it's not ok to wash your face in lighter fluid, having butane in your face wash isn't a problem. Butane is used as a propellant in aerosol cans, and that's about the end of it's use. Once it's exposed to air, it quickly evaporates and most likely doesn't even end up on your face.

Interesting, huh? The Beauty Brains have lots of inside info to share -- head on over there to learn more about your beauty products.
<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; I recently returned from a fabulous vacation with my family at Walt Disney World in Florida. Our six-day adventure was non-stop fun, and a major highlight of this trip were our days at the Disney water parks. We enjoyed both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon to the max and would love to go back every sunny day of the year.

I had a little sad moment though as I chatted with a father of two little ones in the kiddie section of Blizzard Beach. We were commenting on what a challenge it was to keep perfect track of our children in such a busy, water-filled place. The poor guy told me he was alone with his children, because his wife didn't feel like she could go out in public in her swimsuit. He didn't want the kids to miss out on the water fun, so he took them himself. She stayed back at their resort.

It made me amazingly sad to think that this woman felt so uncomfortable in her skin that she couldn't even enjoy a beautiful day with her family at a ridiculously perfect place. I know we all feel self conscious at times (including me). And even as my profession is to educate and inspire others to be more fit ... I wouldn't want anyone to place their life on hold because of their body shape or size. Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly, our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.

Mmmmmm. Just the mention of Chef Jens Dahlmanns's name puts my mind in ecstasy. His is the name of the man who created what I'd choose as my 'last meal.' He's the premier Chef of Disney's signature restaurant The California Grill, who also oversees a staff of award-winning chefs atop Disney's Contemporary Resort. Chef Jens was classically trained in European kitchens and worked for Le Cirque 2000 in <city w:st="on"></city>New York City and Cafe 'L Europe in
<place w:st="on"></place>
<city w:st="on"></city>Palm Beach, <state w:st="on"></state>Florida, before joining Disney in April 2004.

We first spoke on the phone a week before I was to dine at his spectacular grill. From a fitness trainer standpoint, he gave all of the 'right answers.' Not that he was contrived, but his stance on cooking is what I would wish to hear. If you've read my features before, you'll know that I preach the importance of lean fresh foods. Read on to see how dead-on Chef Jens is to that style of eating. From a regular gal's point of view, it was just really exciting and fun to hear Chef Jens talk about food. He described white asparagus the same way most men would describe a beautiful woman. I could imagine what each item tasted like as he described them.

My experience at The California Grill was almost indescribable. Chef Jens and his staff were pampering to say the least. He greeted me with a sample of the white asparagus he gushed about, and I knew I was in for something special. The combinations of flavors and textures were to die for! I relished every bite and cleaned each and every plate that landed in front of me (highly unusual for me). The man knows how to make fresh food taste divine. The advice he gave in this interview is exactly what I, as your online Fitzness Trainer, want you to follow. Chef Jens just knows far better than I, how to make all of the healthy stuff taste heavenly.

Fitz: How much does "healthy" influence the foods you create for your menus?

Chef Jens: Healthy actually has a lot to do with our menu. First of all, Disney has set an initiative for enhancing our menus in a healthy way, so across all of the Disney parks and restaurants you'll find better choices. On my part, I'm always driven by what's fresh in the market. We create meals based on the season. At the California Grill, our menu changes according to what foods are in season. Fresh food equals leaner and "cleaner" food. I never use processed ingredients.

Q. Fitzy. I work out a few times a week and eat pretty well, but "six-pack" abs have always escaped me. I do plenty of crunches, but nothing seems to bring me even close to the abs I see on the cover of Men's Health magazine. What is the secret to it? Chase

A. Ahhhh Chase. The elusive six pack. Doesn't every body wish for that? Yes ... almost everybody does. Very few actually achieve it, though. This is the deal Chase, the "secret," if you will. If you want to look like an athlete, you're going to have to behave like an athlete. Train ridiculously hard and eat ridiculously well. Six-pack abs are a sign of elite fitness for sure, and you're probably not going to earn them working out a "few times a week and eating pretty well."

When my son plays outside until the very last minute I'll allow. Then, later, as he's lying in bed he starts to complain of this spot or that spot. Invariably, I don't see anything in the spots he's pointing to. It seems odd because when I get a bug bite I flare up terribly. But flare-up or no flare-up, itchy bug bites drive my son just insane.

I prefer to use home remedies on my son's insect bites more often than not. My old stand-by is mixing baking soda with a bit of warm water and creating a paste. It's soothing and seems to take the sting away quite quickly. I've used it on both mosquito bites and bee stings.

Health911 has some more ideas on home remedies for insect bites. Some of their recommendations include rubbing apple cider vinegar on the skin as an insect repellent, dabbing dissolved Epsom salts on insect bites, using ice packs to reduce swelling, and using a paste of meat tenderizer to reduce the sting of bites.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Daily Fit Tip: Cures from your cupboard

Filed under: Natural Products, Daily Fit Tip, Alternative & Green Health
From rubbing whiskey on sore gums (not a good idea) to gargling warm salt water when you have a sore throat (pretty soothing, actually), my mom is a fountain of home remedies. Some of their tips include:

Rub a small amount of liquid laundry detergent on a mosquito bite.

Put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on the floor of a hot running shower and inhale the steam to relieve congestion.

For brighter, whiter teeth, combine a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of peroxide. Brush the mixture on, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off thoroughly.

To remove dead skin from your feet, soak them in warm water for 15 minutes then scrub with a mix of water and salt to exfoliate.

Soothe a sore throat with tea infused with clove, ginger, and cinnamon and sweetened with honey.

Specifically used for its supposed anti-aging properties and its benefit to eyesight, goji's high vitamin C and B content also help make it a powerful combatant against kidney and liver problems.

Sometimes referred to as wolfberries, goji berries make a healthy and delicious little snack. In addition to the benefits listed above, some recent research into this rare fruit uncovered a potential link between its consumption and a decrease in blood pressure and cholesterol.

In addition to the berry, you can also try goji juice, which has somewhat of an unusual, but decent, taste. A word of caution for people taking the blood thinner warfarin, though. Just as many leafy green vegetables can lessen the effectiveness of this medication, goji may do the same. I use the Voile Mineral Powder and the Pure Blush, in Rosewood. What I like best is the smooth finish, the lack of "sparkly-ness" which gives a completely natural look.

The biggest disappointment for me was when I found out Aromaleigh used parabens in their lipstick. To me, it went against everything the naturalness of their other makeup was all about.

Happily, I can announce that they have retired their chemical laden line of lipstick and introduced Color Infusion Lipstick. This new line of lipstick is as pure as they come and includes lovelies like shea butter and rose hip seed oil.

I couldn't wait to try it. I ordered samples of six different colors and I am happy to say that I love this lipstick. It is rich and creamy, has just enough color and is smooth enough that I don't even need a lip balm base like I used to wear. The colors are pure and true and so well formulated.

Nuance is my favorite, with Coquette, Crush and Rosebud running close seconds. Even Perfect, which is a pink that I normally wouldn't wear, is a lovely color.

So yay to Aromaleigh, for ditching the chemicals and creating lipstick that everyone will love.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stress Less: Homeopathic sleep aid

Filed under: Natural Products, Stress Reduction, Reviews & Products, Motivation, Alternative & Green Health
Winter means most people spend less time in the sunshine. And that can make falling asleep difficult.

Such was the case with me last week. The insomnia was stressing me out, the lack of sleep made stress management much more difficult and no amount of chamomile tea, reading or relaxation before bed seemed to help. I've never been the type to pop sleeping pills. But I've never had much problem falling or staying asleep until a few occasions in the past couple of years.

I've found the answer: Moon Drops. These little vanilla-flavored homeopathic lozenges cost me only a little more than $5 for a box of 30 at my local health food store (they are cheaper via this web site). And they work! For me anyway. And I don't have to stress about side effects or other problems traditional sleeping pills can cause.

Sweet dreams!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Winter relief for dry lips

Filed under: Natural Products, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health
If the cold weather wasn't bad enough, another side effect of winter is the dry skin that plagues the majority of us once the temperatures drop. In particular, I notice myself reaching for the chap stick twice as often as I normally would, to soothe my almost painfully dry lips. You too?

Everyday Health has a list of things you can do to keep your lips from drying out this winter:

Protect and moisturize lips with beeswax or petroleum jelly.

Drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated

Keep a humidifier running in your house

Avoid the sun and wind

When you are outdoors, wear sunscreen on your lips.

And don't forget to pack your chap stick with you everywhere you go!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Honey may soothe coughs as well as OTC drugs

Filed under: Natural Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Parents who are heeding the FDA warnings not to give cold medications or antihistamines to young children may find themselves scrambling for other ways to relieve their child's cough. They may be glad to hear that an old home remedy -- honey -- is getting a closer look as a cough reliever.

New research suggests that a dose of honey at bedtime may soothe nighttime cough as well as over-the-counter cough suppressants. More research needs to be done to find out if this study holds water, but health experts say that the benefit may come from honey's antioxidants and microbe-fighting characteristics.

I've treated sore throats with lemon juice and honey before, as did my mother before me and her mother before her. It'll be interesting to see if science can prove this home remedy really works.

Note: Children under the age of 1 should never be given honey, because it can cause botulism in young children.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How safe is your daily beauty routine?

Filed under: Natural Products, Sustainable Community, Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Lead in lipstick, carcinogenic mascara -- it's hard not to ignore these headlines, and it's harder still to avoid the fact that the beauty products we use every day are loaded with nearly unpronounceable chemicals. But are those chemicals really dangerous? The debate rages on.

On one side, we have the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Group, who say that women use up to 200 chemicals before they walk out the door every morning. These chemicals, they say, are scientifically linked to birth defects, cancer, and infertility and include things like parabens, petrochemicals, and phtalates. On the other side, we have product manufacturers who say that these claims have been circulating for years, that they are unfounded, and that the FDA sees no reason to address them again now.

I'm not sure where the truth really lies on this issue, but I do think that every time we can avoid using a chemical, it's a good thing. If you're concerned about the issue of chemicals in beauty products, read this article and follow some of their suggestions for reducing your exposure.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
