Some may think it's as simple as hitting the hotel's fitness center. But when you're traveling to small towns like I did (including one with a welcome sign that read: "Population: Just Plain Good Folks"), you're lucky to have a hotel equipped with an ice machine, much less a fitness center.

If you travel frequently, portable exercise gear can be a real fitness saver. Resistance bands work great and jump ropes are also handy (though the person in the room below yours might not agree). A more unique product you might want to try is the Valslide, compact slide boards designed by trainer Valerie Waters.

The boards slide easily on carpet and help you do moves like lunges, mountain climbers, and push-up flies. All of the movements utilize two or more muscle groups, so it's an efficient sculpting tool -- just ask these six celebrities.

%Gallery-33896%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pick pilates to score a Sandra Bullock butt

I've never really given much thought to Sandra Bullock's butt. But, hey, the girl looks pretty good -- see for yourself in the gallery below. I must say, her back side seems beautifully built.
%Gallery-32992%

Want a butt like this? Just shell out a few bucks and get yourself The Mari Winsor Pilates for Pink Workout DVD. This is how Bullock tones her behind -- Vanessa Williams does too -- and the bonus in it all is that while you work your magic, you'll also be fighting breast cancer -- $1 from the sale of each DVD (you'll get a resistance band too) will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Perfect timing -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Filed under: Fitness, Celebrities, Healthy Products

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

That's Fit Giveaway - BPA-free CamelBak Better Bottles

You might remember me gushing about the CamelBak Better Bottle a while back. There are many ways you can get involved. One of the simplest ways is to simply purchase products that support the Susan G. Komen Foundation ... so go pink!

From watches to t-shirts to tote bags to yogurt, you can find almost any product that labeled with the familiar pink ribbon. Portions of the proceeds from these products benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and help with cancer research costs.

A wide variety of fitness-related products have gone pink, too. If it's time to replace your running shoes or you need some new workout clothes, then why not look for the pink ribbon? Check out the gallery for just a few of the products that help support cancer research.

%Gallery-33172%

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fitz's Cool Tools: Element Bars -- Design your own!

I just received a few Element Bars in the mail, and instantly knew I'd need to share them with you. If you're a person who likes to have a protein/energy bar on occasion when you can't grab a meal, or uses them as a healthier version of snacks or desserts ... Element Bars are a fantastic choice. Why? You can design them yourself!

The process is really quite fun, and you'd be surprised how personalized these bars can be. You get to choose things like: bar texture, fruits, nuts, sweets, and nutritional boosters. Once you've made your purchase, the bar you receive in the mail will literally be a custom bar created by you!

I ordered a few of the most popular Element Bars and enjoyed them all. My favorite was "Chocolate Nut Pie". I couldn't decide whether this bar tasted more like chocolate chip cookie dough or brownies, but either way ... it was delicious. I'm actually in the process of trying to keep lean for a photo shoot coming up for of all things, my abs. Ugh! But the bars I chose are high in protein and fiber and low in sugars, so fortunately they fit in with my plan.

Continue reading Fitz's Cool Tools: Element Bars -- Design your own!

Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Diet and Weight Loss, Healthy Products

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Y Water: Fitness water meets playtime for kids

Y Water is looking to tap into more than just the bottled water market by appealing also to the healthy and fit kids market and those shopping for ways to be friendlier to the environment. They offer four specialized low-calorie formulas to target the brain, muscles, bones, and immunity, plus once the water's gone, the leftover bottle (specially created by designer Yves Béhar) can be used as a building block of sorts to make toys and encourage creativity.

Sounds like a great way to get your kids to drink more water and get more vitamins and nutrients, all while helping the environment and stimulating their brains (or at least giving them a few minutes of entertainment).

Via Inhabitat
%Gallery-32849%
Filed under: Organic, Vitamins and Supplements, Healthy Kids, Healthy Products

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rating the fitness fads

Have you ever watched those late-night infomercials touting the newest piece of exercise equipment? Personally, I'm not a big fan of home workout equipment. Most of them limit what they can do for your body and they just take up so much space! But sometimes you have to wonder ... is the latest, greatest machine really what you need to get a toned, firm body? Or is it just bound to become a dusty, expensive, clothing rack in your bedroom?

Some fitness experts rated six fitness fads to see if they're really as great as they say they are:

Skorcher. This claims to be the world's best butt exercise, but it garnered mixed reviews from the experts. One said that all of the exercises the Skorcher offers can be done effectively without the machine. Another, however, thought it could really rev up your workout.

Slanted Riser. These risers that angle your step aerobic bench got a decent review, because they add a new dimension to your step aerobic workout.

The Brain Muscle Workout. This fitness DVD didn't strike the experts as anything new. But the mind/body connection the workout promotes is beneficial.

Yoga fusion. Many DVDs and fitness classes have tried to add to the popularity of yoga. But one fitness expert doesn't like the trend. She feels that yoga is for meditation, and the new trend is trying to turn it into a weight loss or fitness activity.

RealRyder. This indoor cycling bike that tilts and turns got rave reviews from one fitness expert, but another felt that the bike offered only slight advantages.

Gravity. This machine is supposed to provide a full-body workout. One fitness expert says that the machine can provide what it claims, however, it's big and bulky (not to mention expensive) and adjusting the resistance is tricky.

At $7.00 a bottle and a recommendation to drink daily, I doubt shaky Wall Street can afford it, either.

If you still want to try it, sweet 'n tart Lemondrop blogger Jenny Muller reports Glowelle comes in two flavors, pomegrante lychee and raspberry jasmine, and is selling exclusively at Neiman Marcus for a limited time. Glowelle uses a combo of vitamins, phyto-nutrients and botanical/fruit extracts which allegedly deliver the highest antioxident Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC value) than any leading beauty beverage.

Sounds great, but unless Nestle's promotional team is handing cold Glowelle out on city streetcorners, I think I'll opt for a $5.00 bottle of multivitamins and free tap water instead.
But according to some health experts in the UK, control-top panties aren't quite as miraculous as we'd like to believe. Here's why: Flabby midsections are often a sign of weak ab muscles--which are harmful to the back -- and unhealthy eating habits that could lead to diabetes, cancer and heart disease. So while slimming underpants will help you look good for that big event, they're just helping you ignore an uncomfortable and potentially deadly problem -- your weight.

There are dozens of brand names to choose from, not to mention hundreds of different models. And I don't know how it is where you live, but the people who work in the athletic stores are more interested in catching up on The Hills with their co-workers than helping me find the best fit for my running routine.

For instance? Bliss FatGirlSleep cream promises to get rid of cellulite while you're sleeping. No, seriously. It's not the first time such claims have been issued and I'm sure it won't be the last. Regardless, it's all a bunch of baloney, and at $38 for 6 oz, it's expensive baloney.

You never know if you're going to be darting to the left or the right in order to catch it.

Try standing 3-4 feet from a partner and bouncing a reaction ball toward your partner. The object is to catch the ball after only one bounce. It may not sound hard, but you'll find yourself darting back and forth and moving quickly in order to catch the ball. If you want to make it even more challenging, just back up a bit.

Not only is it a fun, effective workout. Playing with a reaction ball helps you improve your hand-eye coordination and increases your reaction time -- beneficial skills for any sport. You can also practice by yourself, by bouncing a reaction ball against a wall. Try it with your kids, too ... it's sure to be a hit!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Men: This chemical might make you fat

Pay attention, men, to all the stuff you've got stashed in your house -- everything from plastics to shaving creams to foods -- because a common household chemical may be found in these items and could be making you fat.

Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) are the problem chemicals, and studies found that men with the most exposure to them were on average about three inches larger in waist circumference than other men. Their insulin resistance levels were notably higher as well.

Don't stress too much about this news, because there's something you can do about this dangerous chemical: Avoid it. Maybe one day, the government will regulate it too.

For more on phthalates, from the folks who think they are not so harmful, click here.
While hunting around on the Internet the other day, I stumbled upon this Lunch & Go lunchbox. It's not a box for kids, though. It's for grown-ups (well, kids could use it too, I suppose). It looks pretty handy, so I thought I'd share.

Broad enough to hold your nutritious goods, this lunchbox is pretty thin and is easy to slip into bags and totes. See that red sandwich holder? It has a movable divider to accommodate varying serving sizes. If you prefer a different container, a green one, great for salads, might be up your alley. It comes with a cutting board and dressing cup too.

Another selling point: The removable lunchbox lid doubles as a place mat, making clean-up easier than ever. And an icepack is part of the deal too.

Get your very own handy, dandy box here at Aladdin (I hear Target carries it too). Price starts at $15. Add the red container for $12 and the green one for another $12. Worth the price? You decide. And let us know.

%Gallery-31005%

Sure, they're wonderful when you're jogging or working out at the gym; they pull sweat away from your body instead of letting it cling to you like a cotton t-shirt does. But those moisture-wicking shirts and shorts and socks have a downfall... they are the pack rats of sweat.

The same problem holds true for many sports uniforms. I know my son's nylon soccer uniform can come out of the wash with all the grass stains removed, but sometimes there's a lingering aroma quite different than the spring-fresh aroma my laundry detergent touts.

There are plenty of options for getting your workout clothes or sports uniforms looking and smelling perfectly clean. Specialty sports detergents are designed for performance fabrics. And other laundry additives can boost the cleaning ability of your normal detergents. Check out the gallery for some ideas.

%Gallery-31086%

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Don't cha knoooow? They were featuring the state as it is hosting the Republican Convention in St. Paul. (That title is meant to be read with an adorable accent.)

Apparently all the folks in Minnesota aren't in "the know" about health. On display in this feature was an obnoxious amount of fried food being carried around on sticks. Mmmmm. Heart disease. Corn dogs, fried chips, fried meat and to top it off, chocolate covered bacon!

Would you ever even consider eating this? It looked pretty fowl to me, though I am fairly particular about what I put in my mouth. I can only imagine some guy sitting in a diner one day thinking, "how could I improve on this strip of pig fat? I know! Let's dip it in chocolate!"
