Now that summer is in full swing, most of us are looking to work less and play more. The only pitfall is that half days and long weekends can throw off our diet and fitness routines. The result: Our best stay-healthy efforts Monday through Friday get undone. In fact, a study involving 50 to 60-year-olds conducted at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., found that their lifestyle changes on the weekends didn't just stall weight loss, in some cases, participants actually packed on more pounds. What a waste! "It's particularly important for people to find ways to keep up their exercise routines on the weekends and other down times - and even increase them if possible - to help counteract the inevitability of eating more," says study author Susan Rachette.

Scheduling day-off activities ahead of time, like a tennis game or group hike, will make it easier for you to peel yourself off the chaise and get going. Plus, you've gotten your friends or family involved, further reducing your potential to skip it.

How else to strike a balance between relaxation and activity? Two of the most inspiring were not the young hard bodies we see on the covers of tabloid magazines each week. No, these two celebrities have healthy capable bodies, which have endured many years of living.

The woman I speak of, at 57 years old, is every bit the blond bombshell she was known as 30 years ago. She works out six to seven days a week, mixing up her workouts with: kickboxing, yoga, water aerobics and climbing her steep driveway known as "butt hill."

The man who stood out is in his late 60s and still plays basketball and baseball on a regular basis. The guy has probably been in every hit sitcom in the past three decades and told me that the highlight of his year would be if I could hook him up to throw the ball around with the Heisman Trophy winning University of Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow.

Continue reading Age Without Getting Old: Lessons from Celebrities

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

81-Year-Old Knocks Off 21st Consecutive Marathon

You're never too old to start a fitness program. That's one lesson learned from Joy Johnson, an 81-year-old Californian who recently finished her 21st consecutive NYC Marathon in slightly over six hours. What shocks me is Johnson started a fitness program after retiring at the age of 56.

Her retirement walking program metamorphosed into jogging, running a 10K, then racing marathons -- all 50 of them. Johnson loves the energy running imparts. She can also eat whatever she wants, sleeps like a baby at night and confounded researchers at Stanford once with surprisingly good results on a bone density test. They thought the machine had busted.

If you've always been on the sidelines of fitness and your 40th birthday is a distant memory, it's not too late to start an exercise program. Preventive fitness programs are popular. In this article, USA Today highlights the benefits of senior fitness -- not only is the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program exploding nationwide, certifications for senior personal trainers are in demand, and one 2008 study found senior fitness lowered long-term health care costs.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How Many Days Should You Strength Train Each Week?

Occupational Therapist and uber fit mom Wendy Alexander knows her stuff and shares a simple strategy for staying strong and fit! We all know Courteney Cox Arquette is beautiful. She's a former model and once landed on the cover of People magazine's Most Beautiful People issue. But what might surprise you is that even a stunner like Cox Arquette is feeling the effects of time marching on. So what does she do to fight Father Time? She exercises.

Cox Arquette isn't unrealistic about her looks. She said, "People who read a magazine can look at the picture and go, 'She looks great for over 40!' But guess what? That's not what I look like. Lighting is everything. When you're in your car and you look in the mirror and the sun's beaming in, you're like, 'Wow, times are getting tough.'" Personally, I think it's refreshing to hear celebs state the problems we all have. I certainly don't have make-up artists and professional photographers snapping shots of me -- but I know I've had days when things looked pretty good in my bathroom mirror, but then all the age lines and pores showed up in the light of day.

Cox Arquette fights back against the natural signs of age with cardio and weight-training five times a week. She enjoys running, hiking, and doing total-body exercises.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/">Courteney Cox Arquette
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/1116115/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/1116114/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/1116113/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/1116112/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/courteney-cox-arquette/1116111/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Put your "best foot" forward towards elite fitness

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

My colleague at the Active Health Network, and yoga expert, Stacy McCarthy, has some pretty enlightening information to share about the two things that keep you running, jumping, and dancing for fitness.
Q. Hi Fitz. My sister lost a bunch of weight recently. She's thirty years old and the weight loss was necessary, but now she looks closer to forty. She's not smoking or sunning, so why does she appear older? Rachel

A. I've heard this before Rachel, so you're not crazy. I've also seen people look decades younger due to major weight loss as well. For the most part, I think people just associate a fuller face with youthfulness. Know many angular -faced children? Probably not. Know any gaunt elderly folks? He's never sick, doesn't take any medication and attributes it all to yoga. He's successfully doubled his life since a heart attack at the prime age of 44, when he smoked four packs a day. After that scare, Talati tossed the smokes and dove into relaxation, meditation and yoga, even studying with a famous guru in India.

Here's a typical day from Talati's 30-year regimen:

Before dawn he drinks a cup of hot water with lemon juice and honey to cleanse the body.

He then devotes every inch of his 5-foot, 125-pound frame for pranayam (breathing exercises), then an hour of yoga. After breakfast he teaches yoga to family.

A solo afternoon yoga session wraps in more challenging poses for whole-body health.

He then walks two miles before retiring for the night, where he dreams of opening a yoga studio in 2009.

Your body is magical, if you treat it right.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Feed your muscles with these 5 foods

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements
When people think about muscle, they think biceps, triceps, glutes, and abs. But beyond the muscle you can <strike>gawk at</strike> see, there's a lot of muscle that's in action all the time inside your body -- like your heart, for one. So, even if you're not trying to build rock hard abs, it's important to remember to feed the muscles you can't see too.

Protein is important to muscle health, because it contains amino acids necessary for growth and repair. According to MSNBC, most Americans get plenty of protein in their diet, but tend to eat less of it as they get older. But not only is the amount of protein you eat important, so is it's quality. Choose high-quality proteins like eggs and fish over fattier meats like ground beef.

Protein isn't the only nutrient necessary for strong muscles.
At nearly 80, Ray Moon has suffered through polio, open heart surgery, financial ruin and two minor strokes. And he has a pacemaker. So you might be surprised to know what Mr. Moon's claim to fame is: He's a bodybuilding champ in his native Australia.

He recently took home the top prize in the Victorian Bodybuilding Championships in Melbourne in the 'over 60' category, which is quite a feat considering he is well over 60 -- by nearly 20 years! What's even more amazing? He only started working out four years ago. For more of this story, click here.

Mr. Moon works out six days a week for 2.5 hours and walks 4 km every day. Feel lazy yet? I sure do.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Over 40? In a few weeks time, however, I'll be officially in my late 30's -- unable to deny it any more. As much as I would like to say my body is just like it was in high school, that's sadly not the case. Time has marched on. In some cases, time has marched downward if you catch my drift.

So while I think this ab workout from More Magazine is appropriate for anyone, regardless of age, I do understand the greater need once you're in your 40's. (Or maybe once you're in your late 30's!)

After all, I think the concept of aging gracefully is silly. Why settle for being graceful when we can be active and fit? Instead of time marching on, why don't we march all over it?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How a short walk can save 9.2 million people from Alzheimer's

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

Walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week might not seem like much. In fact, to someone like me, who is adament about getting to the gym, this would be considered a lazy week. But in someone who is at risk for dementia, it can make a big difference by helping boost your memory and delay the onset of Alzheimer's and other dementia issues.

And although these results don't sound impressive, Australian researchers say anything that delays the onset of Alzheimer's can make a big impact. How big? According to officials representing a study done at the Mebourne University,"'If illness onset could be delayed by 12 months, 9.2million fewer cases of Alzheimer's disease would occur worldwide."

But whether you're worried about Alzheimer's or not, you should definitely be getting some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, and walking is a great start.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get to know your cholesterol

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

According to a report by the Society for Women's Research, seventy-four percent of women ages 18 to 44 don't have even a clue as to what their cholesterol numbers are. Clearly this is a problem, as high cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, the number one killer of women.

So, what should your numbers be? I'd suggest that you talk to your doctor to find out the answer to this question. In the meantime, here's a pretty good guide:

Total Cholesterol (HDL + LDL + Triglycerides): You should aim to keep it less than 200 mg/dL.

Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL): Try to keep this bad cholesterol at a level of less than 100 mg/dL.

High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL): Keeping this good cholesterol at around 50 mg/dL or higher is a good idea.

Triglycerides: Keep these energy-storing fatty acids at a level of less than 150 mg/dL.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Do you want to 'Look Like Fit?'

Filed under: Healthy Aging, HealthWatch, Cellulite, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
To truly make the most of your weight loss and fitness efforts, it's best to follow a program that covers all the bases.

Resistance training is a great way to build lean muscle and reduce fat, but it may not be enough by itself to produce the results you're looking for. Therefore, be sure to also include regular cardio sessions in your workout and spend some time stretching, as well. The same logic applies for doing cardio by itself; you will drop pounds, but not as fast as you would if you also weight train. And, without resistance training, you will not put on any considerable amount of lean muscle. But, what do you do if you don't have any weights at your disposal? Simple - use your own body weight. This article, from the popular fitness website iLookLikeFit.com, offers some great tips on how to get a solid body weight workout.

The solution? Take a moment to reevaluate your workout. Be sure to include both resistance training and cardio sessions throughout the week. And, if you opt to do them both in the same day, most experts suggest performing your weight training first and then finish with your cardio.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask Fitz!
Q. Hi Fitz, I'm 26 years old and have never been happy with my upper body. My arms are lanky and my chest is soft. I have a demanding job as an attorney, and simply don't have the time nor the know how to get involved in a complicated training regiment. I know I have to "earn" a good body, so I was hoping you could dumb things down for me. A simple routine I can do in a hurry. P.S. I love your fit tip videos! Thanks. Tim

A. Hello Mr. Tim! Training for a guy with "no time" huh? That' my specialty! Glad you asked. Look pal, I wish I could pull off the persona as a rocket scientist, because I'm on top of this stuff ... but I can't. Fitness is painfully simple, and you can achieve your goals without much complexity.

Continue reading Ask Fitz! It's something I've been eating several times a week, and it really has served me well. I insist that my food be: low cal, low fat, high fiber, often high in protein and overall nutritious. This Protein Power Potato fills me up, and gives me the energy to get through tough workouts or wild days with my kids. (It keeps me really trim too.)

I've included an option for making this a vegetarian or carnivorous option as well. Since I understand food, and know what I want out of it ... sometimes I just look in my fridge and concoct something that's going to give me what I need. That's how we got this meal. Did I mention this thing is delicious too? Mmmmm. I could eat it every day!

There are dozens of machines, group classes, and pieces of equipment from which to choose, placing fitness at your fingertips. But, gyms can also be places where people want to talk your ear off instead of letting you work out, home to a number of infection-causing germs, and sometimes too overcrowded to serve their primary purpose of convenience. Thankfully, you can always take your workout outside.

To maintain a healthy lifestyle, all that's required is 30 minutes of activity per day -- whether it be jogging, walking, shooting hoops, gardening, dancing, etc. And, to keep muscles and bones strong, doctors suggest also incorporating 20 minutes of resistance training exercise two or three times a week.

With summer still here, there's no better time to break free of the confines of your gym walls and take your workout into the great outdoors. No longer will you have to wait for equipment, wipe sweat off a weight bench, or even have to worry about making it there before they close. Now that sounds pretty convenient to me.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Energy crisis

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Men's Health
When the elderly complain of feeling tired or experiencing a lack of energy, it shouldn't immediately be dismissed as simply being a sign of old age, says new research published in he Journal of Gerontology. That lack of energy -- known as anergia -- may be a sign of several health problems.

Researchers found that the 18 percent of study participants classified as anergic reported more arthritis, sleep disorders, cardiovascular symptoms and other health issues, according to an article that appears on MedicineNet.com. They also reported twice as many overnight hospitalizations, emergency department visits and home care services. In addition, anergia was associated with a 60 percent greater rate of death in the six years after participants were surveyed, the study said.

To read the full article, click here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

How stroke victims can help their brain heal

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
Strokes can be debilitating at best, deadly at worst. But for those who've survived a stroke, new research shows that there is one important thing they can do to help their brain facilitate positive changes: Exercise. And we're not talking about running weekly marathons here--walking on the treadmill as little as three times a week can significantly improve mobility and physical conditioning.

What's more, patients don't need to start an exercise regime immediately after their stroke -- Starting a workout program any time after a stroke was beneficial. In fact, one patient showed improvement after exercising 20 years after his stroke.

Man, is there anything a good workout can't do?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fitz's Cool Tools: LesserEvil Snacks - Kettle Corn and Potato Sticks

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Healthy Home, Vegetarian, Womens Health, HealthWatch, Healthy Recipes, Healthy Kids, Healthy Products and Reviews, Cellulite, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

Remember how happy we all felt when Lay's introduced Baked Potato Chips? I do. It was a feeling of relief for me. I had given up chips in lieu of a hard fit body. Fair exchange I thought! But then, there was this company telling me that they weren't going to fry all of their chips anymore, and yes ... there would be a healthier version for people like me. Yahoo!

Once again, snack lovers get to rejoice. The LesserEvil brand snack company has created an amazing variety of popcorns and krinkle potato sticks to make just about everyone drool. Most single servings contain about 110 calories of which about 20 come from fat. Not bad!

The Classic Kettle Corn is the perfect combination of sweet and salty, and thank goodness my bag was a single serving. If it weren't, I could have devoured nine! It was better than any of the junky stuff they sell at carnivals for sure! The Black and White Kettle Corn made my children's "movie night" here at home an even more special event. Good news for me ... I didn't feel the slightest bit bad about giving it to them. The Zesty Pizza Krinkle Sticks were odd to my husband and I though. Why? Because we could not figure out how they made them taste exactly like pizza! It was both weird and wonderful at the same time.
