It's a favorite of mine that I usually reserve for a treat at a restaurant. It looks like my son and I were a little lucky, though. As of now, 32 people in 12 states have contracted salmonella from frozen chicken dinners.

The frozen foods in question were breaded or pre-browned chicken breasts that needed to be cooked in the oven. Those who got ill neglected to follow the instructions and heated the food in the microwave. If the chicken is fully cooked before freezing, the microwave more than likely won't do the job.

When dealing with frozen foods, be sure to prepare the meal according to directions. And be sure that any meats -- frozen or fresh -- are cooked thoroughly.
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Health in the Media

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Green gyms aim to improve the earth's health and yours

Want to build a better body and help the environment at the same time? An easy way to go about doing this is to run or bike to work every day, but let's take that a step further by also running or biking to the gym. And, once at that gym, your conservation efforts don't end there; in fact, they increase. This is the philosophy behind a growing trend in the fitness industry: Green Gyms.

The New York Times recently did a piece (titled "How Powerful is Your Gym?") about a gym in Portland, OR, one of many around the country that are dedicated to protecting the environment. In addition to utilizing solar-powered electricity for their energy-efficient treadmills and elliptical machines, many of these same machines are actually constructed to generate energy.

Environmentally-conscious people from all walks of life are drawn to green gyms. Some enjoy the no-frills approach to fitness they offer (many don't even have showers or drinking fountains), while others appreciate the opportunity to make a difference by reducing their carbon footprint. In all cases, people seem to be hip to the idea, and that creates a very promising outlook for the future of our health and the health of the world we live in.
Filed under: Fitness, Health in the Media

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Barack Obama on the cover of Men's Health

He may be running for President, but that doesn't mean that Barack Obama has stopped taking care of himself. In fact, the Democratic presidential nominee will be on the November cover of Men's Health, the magazine's 20th anniversary issue.

It's got to be difficult to exercise and eat right when you're busy campaigning across the country, there's no doubt about that. But maintaining a healthy diet and workout routine is a great way to relieve stress. And with only a little more than a month left until Election Day, I'm guessing stress is a pretty big part of Obama's daily life.

I'm curious to see what direction Men's Health steers their interview. Will they ask him about his personal fitness routine? How he'd maintain that routine if he's elected President? Or will the focus on the broader issue of health care for all Americans? We'll just have to wait and see until the issue comes out.

If you could ask Barack Obama or John McCain a diet or fitness related question, what would it be?

%Gallery-32772%
Filed under: Fitness, Health in the Media

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Can crime TV make you fat?

Spend too many late nights watching CSI and Law & Order? If you're overweight, these shows might be to blame. Over at Fitsugar, they're talking about new research that shows an interesting connection between your TV habits and your eating and spending habits.

The study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found that consumers who had recently been reminded of their own mortality by seeing death on TV spent more money on groceries -- and ate more of those groceries as well. These findings were true of a number of food items, including snack foods like chips and soda, as well as non-snacky groceries like frozen foods, meats and vegetables. And it seems they're paying attention and trying to 'beef-up' -- well, if the recent New York Fashion week is any indication anyway. Nian Fish, the chair of fashion designers health initiative is insisting that all models used in the various shows were size 2 or 4 -- not 0 or 00, as was the previous standard. "I think there's progress," says Fish, "The girls are still slim. We didn't want them not to be slim. We wanted a projection of health"

Still, the fashion industry is a long way from embracing curves. "Thin is going to be the ruling look -- until someone says, 'I want voluptuous,'" said Fish. "I don't know if that ever is going to come back." And in London, plans to make models pass a health examination were dropped because of not enough international support.

And it seems the French government is interested in keeping it that way, what with proposed taxes on junk food and laws against images depicting too-thin models. Now the French are taking their message of health to the media and running 'healthy living' ads on TV and radio stations across the nation, as well as in print. Kind of like this one on Fitsugar, which reads 'For your health, eat at least five fruits and veggies a day.'

I think if introduced in North America, these ads would be a refreshing break from all the pizza and fast foods commercials we are bombarded with on such a regular basis. But would they work?
But according to recent research, the average 'gamer' isn't unhealthy -- in fact, gamers have lower BMIs than the average adult in the U.S.. The average BMI among gamers was 25 -- just on the border of normal and overweight. What's more, the average gamer engaged in physical activity once or twice a week. Gamers did, however, show larger instances mental health issues, including depression and substance abuse.

But how many of us are actually eating that amount? No enough, according to this article from the Daily Mail. Only one in eight people in Britain are getting five servings a day. The average was 2.5 servings, and 12% of participants didn't get any produce during the day.

If you're not getting enough fruit and veggies in your diet, you're only hurting yourself, so if you want to look and feel your best, take steps to work fresh produce into your eating habits. It's not hard -- order a salad on the side instead of fries, have a vegetable cocktail like V8 instead of a coke, or choose to snack on an apple instead of chips. You owe it to yourself.

Naturally, raising testosterone levels via weight resistance training can be a very good thing for both men and women unless it causes you to be less attracted to your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend!

A recent journal publication reveals that women who have higher testosterone levels are attracted to men who have more masculine, "manly," high testosterone-like features -- such as the physical facial qualities that Russel Crowe or Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson possess. Men with elevated levels of the same hormone are more likely to be attracted to more feminine faces like Natalie Portman or Jessica Biel.

This fascinating study was conducted at the University of Aberdeen's Face Research Laboratory. Researchers had male and female volunteers view pairs of photographs of the opposite sex and asked them to choose who they found the most attractive. Each volunteer gave saliva samples to measure testosterone levels during their photo viewing sessions. This process was conducted four times in four weeks with each session one week apart. Face preferences changed as testosterone levels changed. For women, if testosterone was found to be lower, they would choose a less masculine face and conversely, if the hormone was higher, they selected the image of one who had more chiseled, macho features! Men selected more feminine faces when their testosterone was higher. What does all this mean?

Continue reading Pumping up changes laws of attraction

Filed under: Fitness, Health in the Media, Healthy Relationships, Women's Health, Men's Health

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sweet, tasty and tart in one place

AOL debuted its new site for women last week. As Team Lemondrop puts it, the site "is a place where you can care equally about America's Next Top Model and America's next top president."

I care more about the latter than the former, but I was enticed enough. A quick surf session brought me a collage of the weird faces people make when they dance, a piece from a model on how to take a decent pic and, my favorite, how to handle a Facebook request from someone who really isn't a friend.

I made sure to take note of the 1,600-calorie desserts, too, so I can avoid them!

Filed under: Health in the Media, Women's Health

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Childhood obesity: Caused by pollutants in the womb?

If you're expecting, not only should you not count calories, you should be wary of pesticides too, according to recent reports. In studying childhood obesity, researchers discovered a strong link between chemical contamination in the womb and cases of obesity in children. Just why this link exists is not yet clear, but it's thought that these findings could forever change the way foods are processed worldwide.

Chemicals that showed a link to obesity (called Obesogens) include organotins, bisphenol A (BPA), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and phthalates. Sound like a pretty good deal? Well, this 'good deal' is not going over well down under, particularly with the Obesity Action Coalition -- they feel this kind of promotion is encouraging unhealthy habits and ultimately obesity.

They have one major problem with this offer in particular: The deal is only available if you order a big mac, fries, soda and an apple pie. It's not available on salads or other healthy fare. This meal works out to a whopping 1347 calories and 64 g of fat, so let's be honest here -- whoever eats this should leave the car at home and do a bit --or a lot -- of walking.

So, it would seem that thinking you're out of shape can actually play a role in feeling out of shape, even if your weight tells a different tale. You may not look like someone who is classified as fit, but that doesn't mean that you're too fat or too skinny or too anything. Listen to the people around you -- and not the glamorized, celebrity-obsessed media -- when they tell you that you look great, because chances are you do.

And, earlier this year, the FDA ruled that HFCS is "not natural." However, an ad campaign has been launched to try to change our minds.

Have you seen these commercials? I can't say that I disagree with part of their message -- inform yourself about what you're eating. The problem is that the HFCS industry wants to be the ones informing you via their website, SweetSurprise.com. And, sorry, but that's not exactly an unbiased source.

So why are these ads coming out now? There could be many reasons, including the fact that major food retailers, like Kraft, are starting to label products as HFCS-free because so many people are trying to cut it out of their diets. The fact of the matter is that it's extremely difficult to avoid HFCS -- it's everywhere. A number of studies have shown a link between HFCS and obesity, especially in children. HFCS doesn't give you the full feeling you should have after consuming it, leading you to consume more calories and gain weight.

Continue reading High fructose corn syrup launches ad campaign

Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Health in the Media, Diet and Weight Loss

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pre-washed salads: A good idea or not?

When I head to the grocery store, I can't help it. I'm drawn to those pre-washed bags of salad that offer so much convenience for just little bit more money. You see, most of the time, I'm cooking for one and it seems like more trouble than it's worth to wash the lettuce and spin it dry. OK, go ahead and do your judging but don't try and tell me you haven't been taken in by their charms.

Yes, pre-washed salads are a dieter's best friend. But are they worth the extra cost? Probably not, since experts in the UK are speaking out about them, calling them unsafe and blaming them for a potential rise in food poisoning cases, particularly instances of salmonella and E. coli contamination.

So save your money and do what I do now: wash all your lettuce as soon as you get home from the grocery story, and put it in your fridge. That way, fresh lettuce is readily available, and you can ensure that it's been properly washed.

Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Health in the Media, Healthy Habits

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Do you want to 'Look Like Fit?'

To truly make the most of your weight loss and fitness efforts, it's best to follow a program that covers all the bases.

Resistance training is a great way to build lean muscle and reduce fat, but it may not be enough by itself to produce the results you're looking for. Therefore, be sure to also include regular cardio sessions in your workout and spend some time stretching, as well. The same logic applies for doing cardio by itself; you will drop pounds, but not as fast as you would if you also weight train. And, without resistance training, you will not put on any considerable amount of lean muscle. But, what do you do if you don't have any weights at your disposal? Simple - use your own body weight. This article, from the popular fitness website iLookLikeFit.com, offers some great tips on how to get a solid body weight workout.

The solution? Take a moment to reevaluate your workout. Be sure to include both resistance training and cardio sessions throughout the week. And, if you opt to do them both in the same day, most experts suggest performing your weight training first and then finish with your cardio.
Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, Health in the Media, Healthy Aging, Women's Health, Men's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, HealthWatch, Cellulite

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Don't cha knoooow? They were featuring the state as it is hosting the Republican Convention in St. Paul. (That title is meant to be read with an adorable accent.)

Apparently all the folks in Minnesota aren't in "the know" about health. On display in this feature was an obnoxious amount of fried food being carried around on sticks. Mmmmm. Heart disease. Corn dogs, fried chips, fried meat and to top it off, chocolate covered bacon!

Would you ever even consider eating this? It looked pretty fowl to me, though I am fairly particular about what I put in my mouth. I can only imagine some guy sitting in a diner one day thinking, "how could I improve on this strip of pig fat? I know! Let's dip it in chocolate!"

Continue reading Don't cha knoooow? They might be -- recent studies show that marriage problems have been linked to a specific gene variation in males. The gene variation, involved in brain signaling, affected the ability to mate for life in rodents and experts believe that it may produce similar results in humans, based on findings that showed that men with the gene were more likely to be unhappy in their relationships.

Still, don't let these findings get you down. Marriage is hard but a little compassion, understanding and quality time goes a long way. Our Life Fit expert Laura Lewis has some valuable tips on how to make love last -- check them out!

Filed under: Health in the Media, Healthy Relationships

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fitz's Low Calorie Power Packed Potato Skin Recipe

I'm so excited to share with you the recipe for my Protein Power Potato. It's something I've been eating several times a week, and it really has served me well. I insist that my food be: low cal, low fat, high fiber, often high in protein and overall nutritious. This Protein Power Potato fills me up, and gives me the energy to get through tough workouts or wild days with my kids. (It keeps me really trim too.)

I've included an option for making this a vegetarian or carnivorous option as well. Since I understand food, and know what I want out of it ... sometimes I just look in my fridge and concoct something that's going to give me what I need. That's how we got this meal. Did I mention this thing is delicious too? Mmmmm. I could eat it every day!
