I'm far more impressed when a brand uses an athlete to promote their sporting equipment or fitness attire than when they use a regular celebrity. I like to believe that, if an athlete is promoting it, he or she probably wears it, so it can't be all bad. It's a flawed belief, I know, but it works for me.

Adidas is hoping that women across the nation share my belief -- they've tapped Rainbeau Mars, yogini extraordinaire, to promote their yoga line. Next spring, Adidas Performance Stores across the nation will carry the new Rainbeau Mars Signature yoga activewear collection, which will be made from sustainable fabrics.
%Gallery-33680%
According to Adidas, Rainbeau had plenty of input in the creation of the collection, offering insight into what female yoga practitoners really need. In addition to that, the well-known yogini has done a series of ads for the brand (which you can see in the gallery) and shot an instructional video featuring famous athletes like Laila Ali and Steffi Graf, all with the theme "Play Yoga."
Filed under: Fitness, Celebrities, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

10 tips for dressing your curves

Contrary to what fashion magazines and celebrities might lead us to believe, we don't need to cut down on our curves. We just need to dress them up, like this.

Dress for your true size, not what you want to be or once were.

Dress from the inside out, starting with a well-fitting bra and shapewear to smooth your lumps and bumps.

Skim your body with high-waist, wide trousers and A-line or flared skirts. No clingy stuff.

Don't cover your curves with big clothes. They make you look, well, big.

End your skirts just before or under the kneecap to lengthen your legs.

Make your jackets short and fitted to flatter your legs and your waist.

Avoid elastic waistbands, because while they may be comfortable, they add bulk to your midsection.

Keep necklines open with a deep V- or scoop-necks.

Use belts to cinch in your waist.

Counterbalance your wide feet with wide heels, because thin heels draw attention to wide feet.

Regardless of body shape, jeans and tees that fit snuggly -- just not tightly -- can flatter anyone, says Makeover Momma, who cautions that these items should be in perfect condition for just the right fashion statement -- ratty or sloppy is just not in vogue, says this wise Momma.

Want to rock the jean and tee style, like Calista Flockhart to the right? Momma says do these two things: Find jeans that fit your body flawlessly -- they should hit mid-stomach, not too snug over the hips and thighs, with the right amount of stretch or flare -- and no matter your size, track down a crisp, higher-end tee that hits at the hip. You don't want it skin tight, though, and not too short either. Forgo the logos too. You want a clean, no frills appeal.

Need to dress things up? Ditch the athletic shoes and ball cap and pair with feminine and casual heels and accessories like colorful earrings and a clutch.

%Gallery-32885%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Need help finding the perfect running shoe? Ask Runner's World

Finding a new pair of running shoes can be a daunting task. There are dozens of brand names to choose from, not to mention hundreds of different models. And I don't know how it is where you live, but the people who work in the athletic stores are more interested in catching up on The Hills with their co-workers than helping me find the best fit for my running routine.

If you're looking for a new shoe, keep reading. Runner's World, the invaluable resource for all things running, has a shoe finding tool that will help you find not only a shoe that not only fits your needs, but your budget too. You can select your price range, favourite brand and desired characteristics, and the shoe finder gives you a list of models, complete with past reviews.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

An Amateur team has received approval to ditch traditional shorts from their uniform and instead play in skirts, according to this article. It's not the first time such a request has been made by regulating officials, but it's the first time it's been approved. Of the decision to switch to skirts, team captain Rinske Temming says, "We think they are far more elegant than the traditional shorts and furthermore they are more comfortable because the shorts are made for men."

There's one catch though -- shorts must be worn underneath the skirts, but 'hot pants' (I'm guessing these are really tight stretchy shorts) are acceptable.

And, while I hope you aren't embarrassed to jump around in the dressing room when trying on sports bras, there's another way to see how bounce-proof a particular sports bra is -- the HerRoom Bounce Test Videos.

HerRoom has exclusive videos of women jogging and jumping around in, oh, I don't know, maybe a million different sports bras. And, after viewing the bra, there's a link you can follow to buy it, right there!

The tagline of HerRoom is "Lingerie We Buy For Ourselves," and I believe it. They do a great job of providing lots of information on a variety of different high-impact sports bras in one location. And, while you're there, if you want some sexy lingerie or other undies to show off the fabulous figure you've worked so hard for, you have that option, too. Happy shopping!
Filed under: Women's Health, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fit Beauty: Get your closet in shape with "The One Hundred"

Normally I wouldn't work a book review into Fit Beauty, but this is just too perfect. I recently read Nina Garcia's The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own, and just like watching an inspirational sports movie makes me want to hit the gym, this book made me want to shop. But with a purpose.

It seems like each season, I look in my closet and think, "Holy crap, I have nothing to wear." I know that's completely untrue, but I also know I'm not alone. And while that might not seem like a big deal, it really can take a toll on you emotionally when you can't find anything to wear, and you know you spent a bit of cash on clothes just a year ago.

With some help from this book, I now feel confident that I can shop in a way that will be productive and stay relevant from season to season, year after year. Let me explain.
%Gallery-31525%

Continue reading Fit Beauty: Get your closet in shape with "The One Hundred"

Filed under: Stress Reduction, Book Reviews, Fit Beauty, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

When heels are harmful to your health

Few things can make you feel sexier than donning a fabulous pair of heels. But if you practically live in stilettos, here's a good reason to take a break from all that height: Heels can cause major problems in your feet, legs and back. In fact, you could end up like the British Apprentice contestant Claire Young, who says that heels ruined her spine and left in with pain so severe that she missed the final of the show.

It started as a nagging pain that she ignored, but the TV reality star eventually did so much damage to her spine that she couldn't get out of bed for weeks. In her own words: 'I've suffered too much to go back to my high heels again - I wear them only on special occasions. I had always joked that my shoes had killer heels, but believe me, I've learned to my cost the real meaning of the term.'

My advice? Stick to flats, and save the heels for rare dressy occasions. And when you do wear heels, wear them well.
Filed under: Healthy Habits, Work/Home Balance, Women's Health, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get your style in shape at the new StyleList blog!

While fitness is about feeling great and being healthy, for many of us it's also about looking good. And so, you can just imagine how excited we are to announce the merging of the lifestyle blog StyleDash and AOL's style channel, StyleList, to create a mega-channel blog!

StyleList will continue to offer its service while the blog will take the content to a whole new level, offering of-the-minute style and fashion tips, news, and advice. You can read all about it in the StyleList blog introductory post.

If you have StyleDash bookmarked, don't worry -- it will continue to redirect to the StyleList blog. If you don't have it bookmarked yet, head on over and check it out! We're proud of and excited about this news, and we hope you will be, too.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Men's trail-ready officewear

These stylish trail-ready jackets wouldn't work for a banker, but if your office embraces casual, you could slip on one of these to meet clients at the office or friends at the trailhead.

Outside magazine's Gear Guy weighed in with these three suggestions:

However, hydration has gotten a little confusing lately -- what bottles are okay, and which ones will cause cancer or defects or death? I just want some water!

Bev did a great post showing you some options of BPA-free water bottles, and now, Camelbak (one of the options Bev listed) was nice enough to send me some samples of their Better Bottles to review for Fit Gadgets. And so, aside from wanting a bottle that won't cause health issues, I sat down to think about the qualities a perfect water bottle would have:

One-handed operation. If I have to hold the cap in my other hand, it's a pain to use running, driving, or talking on the phone.

Large enough mouth for ice cubes. I live in Florida, and if there aren't ice cubes in my water when I go for a run, it's pretty warm by the home stretch.

Also, large enough for plenty of water. I go through a lot of water at the gym, and I prefer to avoid refilling my bottle mid-workout.

Easy to hold. There is nothing more frustrating that struggling to hold onto a bottle while running or walking, whether it's because of the size or the shape or the slipperiness.

How? A study was conducted
recently that found women who wore high heels had more toned abdominals and pelvic floor muscles than "non-stiletto" wearing women! When I read this article my mouth was hanging open in disbelief but at the same time having a "yeah, that makes sense" moment!

The article states: "Dr. Maria Angela Cerruto, a urologist at the University of Verona, Italy, found that the tippy-toe posture of heels can tone a woman's abdomen and pelvic floor. If true, not only will a nice high-heeled shoe attract the man, it may keep him, too."

Of course there are many other medical professionals who will vouch for the fact that high heels may cause back and foot problems as well! I for one recall wearing a beautiful pair of designer heels to a posh shin dig in NYC about six years ago. As I stood, looking oh so good (ha! right!) in my beautiful, towering shoes, engaging in conversation with a brilliant inventor who claimed to have created SKYY Vodka, my feet were screaming in pain. You see, I never wore heels due to my feet being ruined by dancing on toe shoes. That evening, I know I did serious damage to my tootsies and I ended up having foot surgery soon thereafter. To this day I have two pins in my left foot and there is no way I can don a pair of sexy stilettos, not that I would want to. My cowboy boots will have to suffice with their solid heels! But just maybe those boots won't be just good for walking any more ... maybe they will be toning me from the inside out!

Filed under: Health in the Media, Women's Health, Fit Fashion

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Healthy hats protect from the sun

It's summertime. We all want to be outside as much as we can, because before you know it, the days will be short and the ground will be covered with snow.

While getting about 20 minutes of sun each day is important for our vitamin D levels, too much sun can lead to painful burns and risks of skin cancer. One simple -- and fashionable -- way to protect yourself is by wearing a hat.

Healthy Hats is a great place to start shopping for the perfect sun protection. Besides offering lifeguard hats and adventurer hats (think safari), they've got sun smart tips to help you enjoy the sun safely.
Continue reading Healthy hats protect from the sun

Filed under: General Health, Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids, Healthy Products, Fit Fashion

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Active Health Network launched today!

The Active Health Network has just launched and you can find it at SportsHealthExercise.Org. I'm very excited to announce this to you, because I'm one of the several health and fitness experts contributing to the site. Unlike other health and fitness sites, SHE is owned by a fitness expert, Master of Exercise Physiology, Tracy Benham. She has also surrounded herself by other experts (like me) in unique genres of health.

SHE sports a bunch of great text info, and it's full of FITNESS TELEVISION! You don't have to settle for words, when you can see and hear the various experts blabbing about and showing you personally what they want you to know about becoming a better you. General fitness training, yoga, healthy cooking, etc...

So ... I'm stoked! We've done tons of work leading up to this point, and now I can't wait to see how all of that effort pays off for you. So ... what are you waiting for? Stop reading what I say and go listen and see instead.

Continue reading The Active Health Network launched today!

Filed under: Emotional Health, Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Health and Technology, Health in the Media, Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Healthy Relationships, Natural Beauty, Spirituality and Inspiration, Stress Reduction, Vegetarian, Work/Home Balance, Women's Health, Men's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, HealthWatch, Healthy Recipes, Celebrities, Healthy Kids, Healthy Products, Cellulite, Obesity, Healthy Events, Fit Fashion
<h6 style="clear: both; As I have mentioned before, I'm not a fan of carrying anything with me on a run. However, there are certain things I need -- house key, iPod, maybe my phone if I'm going a long distance, even money for really long runs that take me past a gas station. But seriously, there is no way I'm holding on to all that, and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to accept a dollar from my sweaty sock at mile five.

My friends at gracie's gear were kind enough to send some samples of their Power Pouch sports bra and top, and I am sold. Number one, and most importantly, the bra provided excellent support -- throughout a long, intense workout, there was no bouncing or chafing, and if felt phenomenal.

Secondly, the bra is cute -- I have black with pink, but it comes in a bunch of other colors. And it's not low-cut in the front, so it's perfect for those of you who are self-conscious about showing cleavage while you work out. But these aren't the things that set gracie's gear apart from other sports bras.

%Gallery-28899%
Continue reading Fit Gadgets: Gracie's Gear

Filed under: Fit Gadgets, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Your Turn: Ladies, would you work out in a skirt?

I have a closet full of fitness gear, but I don't waver much from my favrouite core pieces: A pair of lululemon capris or full-length pants (depending on the weather), a form-fitting sports bra, a comfy-but-not-baggy tank and some cushioning sports socks. What I wear to the gym certainly isn't cutting-edge fashion, but it's always comfortable and practical.

So it always kind of surprises me when I see fitness outfits with skirts. A few people at my gym wear them, and I see them all the time in fitness magazines. Personally, I would never wear a skirt to work out, unless I was playing tennis (and even then, I would be afraid of giving the whole world a show when I bent over to pick up my ball ... ) Don't get me wrong -- I think running skirts are cute, but I feel more comfortable in pants. Especially running -- I'd be worried about chafed thighs in a skirt.

And, if you don't have a road ID of some sort, it's a good idea to carry your license. And what if you're going a long distance? Wouldn't you like to carry a couple of dollars with you so you could swing into the gas station at mile 8 and grab a cold water?

There are a few solutions. You could find shorts with pockets (although I am not a fan of trying to keep things in my pockets while I run. Especially pointy, hard items, like keys -- ouch), or you could wear a sport belt (it's a fanny pack, regardless of what you call it). Still, for some of us, that's distracting -- we just want our shoes, shorts, and a shirt, and we want to hit the road.

Now, there's a shoe that lets you do just that. ArchPort has a range of athletic shoes (as well as sandals) that they call a "stash shoe." The sole of the shoe has a compartment in which you can fit a few necessities -- a key, credit card, some money, and possibly even your phone -- meaning you can head out the door without having to carry a bunch of extra stuff. Well, you'll be carrying it, but in your shoe and not having to hold on to anything.
%Gallery-28112%
Continue reading Fit Gadgets: ArchPort 'Stash Shoe'

Filed under: Fit Gadgets, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Vital Tools for Aqua Fitness Training

I've been drenched this summer. About a million hours so far racing around water parks, pounding out cannonball after cannonball with my children and running laps in pools with clients striving to become more fit. I just thought I'd give credit to the one thing that's allowing me to get through it all and keep coming back for more: my pool shoes.

I tell you, they're ugly, fugly, and completely unflattering with my brown polka dotted bikini. They are, in fact, the only thing keeping me from tapping out of summer fun though. I realized this yesterday as I went to work at my client's lap pool and forgot them. Oh man! Every step I took was more excruciating than the last. It was dreadful. I also had a rotten experience a bit back when I hit Disney's Typhoon Lagoon without my fancy footwear. Between the heat, the concrete, and the sand ... my feet took quite a beating.

%Gallery-28116%

So! If you too, are working out in the water this summer and want to take it up a notch ... protect those tootsies and get yourself some pool shoes. They're one of the most functional fitness tools I've used all summer!

Continue reading Vital Tools for Aqua Fitness Training

Filed under: Emotional Health, Fitness, General Health, Healthy Habits, Healthy Places, Stress Reduction, Women's Health, Men's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Celebrities, Healthy Products, Cellulite, Obesity, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get a deal on your next running shoes with Shop It To Me Running

One of the beautiful things about online shopping is that there are some phenomenal deals to be had. However, unless you spend a portion of most days checking out your favorite online stores, sometimes it's hard to catch the best deals. And, if you're anything like me, you know there's no reason to pay full price for workout clothes -- if you can afford to be patient, the items you need will always go on sale.

Shop It To Me Running is a fast, easy, and commitment-free way to score great deals on the workout clothes you need. From shoes to sports bras, you can select the brands and sizes you'd like to receive updates on, and when those items go on sale, Shop It To Me Running will email you. You can opt to receive notifications daily, twice weekly, or once a week.

While I'm excited to receive my next update, the thing I'm most thrilled about is how much money I could save on shoes. I was able to enter my exact shoe preference (Mizuno Wave Elixir, Size 8). I know it can be scary to order running shoes without trying them on, but if you have a specific brand and model that you've worn (I'm on my third pair), there's really no risk.

Continue reading Get a deal on your next running shoes with Shop It To Me Running

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
