And while the later sunsets and blooming flowers make outdoor workouts infinitely more appealing, those April showers and other unpredictable spring weather patterns can put a kink in even the best laid fitness plans.

We've got one word for you -- layers. Staying comfortable in different types of weather requires a smart use of layers, and we've got a few to get you started.

Once upon a time, Fit Beauties tended to have one, maybe two pairs of yoga pants. And they were pretty much all the same -- midweight cotton, a bit of stretch, medium rise and -- of course -- black.

However, times have changed and there are oodles of options available in the yoga pant market, meaning you can find just the right pair for you!

The Hold-You-In-and-Make-You-Stronger Pant
It's no secret that I love Lucy. Its Power Lift pant, while not inexpensive at $108, is a great do-it-all option. First and foremost, it utilizes special material to compress and lift, giving you support for better posture and creating body awareness to help you get a great workout. Plus, let's be honest -- who can't use a little help holding in the thighs? The higher rise will help those with a bit of lower belly, and the slight flare at the bottom is universally flattering.

The Brownie-Points Toning Pant
Literature on whether toning clothes and shoes actually do anything is limited at best -- and our editors weren't sold on the idea when they checked them out. But the Reebok EasyTone pant ($80) remains quite popular, and the straight cut is a nice compromise between a boot cut and a legging. My advice: Always go for the look and feel of a yoga pant over claims that it actually improves your workout. A straight leg like this will work best on athletic legs -- it could look a bit too baggy on extremely thin thighs, and because the flare at the bottom is so small, it will not balance out large thighs and could give you a bit of an ice cream cone shape.

The Comfy-Cozy Pant
Sure, we use our yoga pants for actual yoga plenty, but we also use them for Zumba, running errands, lounging and covering up itty-bitty gym shorts when it's cool outside. The Fila loose-fit pant is super affordable ($27.50) and has gotten a great review from a trusted source. This style is semiflattering on just about everyone -- it's not going to make anybody look teeny tiny, as it will drop straight down from the widest part of your leg, but it will hide a multitude of sins. Just don't pair it with a big, baggy top, or you'll look, well, big and baggy.

The Got-It-Flaunt-It Pant
Whether you've worked extra hard for a tush you could bounce a quarter off or you find fitted pants more comfortable for certain workouts (like I can't run in loose pants, I just can't), the Athleta Chaturanga yoga tight ($64) is certainly worth checking out. Plus, it comes in a variety of colors, which makes it a perfect option for layering under long tunics or short dresses when you're being casual and comfy. It probably goes without saying, but if you're looking for something flattering, well, these are going to look best on legs that would look good with nothing on them -- they are tights, after all.

The Too-Hot-to-Trot Pant
Some folks (OK, fine, me) get really hot and sweaty while exercising, making long pants less practical. In that case, a capri like the Lululemon Athletica Wonder Under Crop ($68) is a great option. The gray shade is a nice change of pace, and the four-way stretch in Lululemon's signature material means there's no asana you can do that your pants can't handle. A cropped pant is also a great way to show off super-sexy calves -- just be careful about a loose-fitting cropped pant, as that style can make even the tallest, leanest Fit Beauty look short and stumpy.

Do you have an all-time favorite brand or style of yoga pant? Well, we're not entirely sure how a color can encompass all those traits, but we do know one thing -- those are things that describe Fit Beauties to a tee!

No need to relegate this trendy hue to just home design and high fashion duds -- we've scoured some of our favorite brands to find workout gear in honeysuckle. Or, at least, in pretty pinks that come pretty darn close!
Working out in the winter means you're putting a little more thought into your exercise wardrobe. You want layers that don't add too much bulk, and you need warmth that isn't suffocating.

Instead of just grabbing a headband to keep loose hairs at bay, you need to think about serious headwear. We found a few hats that meet both your function and fashion needs.
Athleta Base Miles Beanie, $29
This snug beanie truly has fit beauties in mind. Not only does it have a hole in the back for your ponytail and moisture-wicking fabric to keep you dry, but the sweet reflective flower logo also adds a feminine touch. After all, there's nothing wrong with looking a little bit sweet while you work up a sweat, right?

L.L. Bean High Pile Fleece Hat, $19
Another cute and cozy option, this fuzzy hat is also adorned with a flower, but it has some other great features as well. The small brim adds a bit of protection from sun and snow, and it's fully lined with fleece to keep you toasty on extra-cold mornings.
Winter weather is hard on everyone's skin, but winter athletes have it harder than most. Whether you're an avid skier or just refuse to let the snow and slush keep you from long outdoor runs, the snow and dry air are likely wreaking havoc on your skin.

You already know you should be wearing sunscreen -- yes, even in the winter. But are you properly caring for your skin once you get in from the cold? The right products can make dry, rough skin smooth and supple. We've got a few favorites, but we'd love to know which products you rely on -- comment below!

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream ($24.50 for 1.7 oz.)
Not only does this facial cream, which is based on Kiehl's popular original facial moisturizer, have a light, smooth texture, but it contains ingredients designed to protect skin from cold temperatures and help skin retain water.

Renée Rouleau Hawaiian Nourishing Cream ($69.50 for 1.7 oz.)
A great option for sensitive skin, the great-smelling Hawaiian Nourishing Cream uses red marine algae, which has proven beneficial for those with acne, rosacea and eczema. Though it feels rich and creamy, it's surprisingly lightweight.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment ($16.99 for 14 oz.)
One of the best-loved secrets among the women we know is Aquaphor healing ointment. It's affordable, effective and incredibly versatile. We've used it for dry skin, especially on our cracked knuckles and red, raw nostrils, and it feels better on our lips than any of our fancy lip balms.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

5 Must-Have Fit Beauty Habits

Whether you're a believer in making official New Year's resolutions, there's no denying that the start of a New Year is a great time to re-evaluate your habits and, if necessary, make changes. Sure, that applies to diet and exercise, but you might also want to take a look at your beauty habits.

We're not talking about learning to apply liquid eyeliner or getting your brows shaped (although, if those are things you'd like to do, more power to you!). We're talking about good habits that will help your natural beauty shine.

Change out of sweaty clothes quickly. How many times have you come home from a long, tough workout, your clothes drenched in sweat, and instead of stripping off your wet workout gear, you sit down to do some extra stretching or have a glass of water. And before you know it, the sweat is dry and you're earned yourself a couple of new zits on your back, chest or arms.

"If you're prone to body acne, remember to shower as soon as possible after exercising or perspiring excessively (even if you feel like you can't move a muscle!)," recommended Dr. Leslie Baumann of Skin Type Solutions. "While you're working out -- and even in your other everyday pursuits -- be sure to wear natural fabrics and breathable clothes to minimize the likelihood of irritating your skin and clogging your pores."

Always wash your face before bed. We've all been guilty of it. You're out late, maybe have a cocktail or two, and by the time you get home, the idea of taking off all that makeup is just too much. Well, suck it up, honey -- failing to remove your makeup can lead to breakouts and styes. If you really have a hard time with a multistep cleanser, try some makeup-removing moisturizing wipes.

Remember, sunscreen can clog pores, too, said Baumann, so not wearing a full face of makeup is no excuse to skip this routine.
Don't wash your hair every day. Your hair doesn't need to be shampooed daily -- honest. Instead of lathering up after every workout, try putting just a touch of conditioner on the ends of your hair after rinsing out the sweat. If your locks seem a little limp or oily, a dry shampoo will solve the problem without drying out or damaging your hair.

Figure out what your skin type is and learn what exactly it needs. If you keep applying moisturizers and acne treatments and aren't seeing results, maybe you need to take a moment to figure out whether you're using the right kinds of products. Baumann's site offers a free questionnaire to help you determine your skin type -- from there, you can figure out how to best care for it. For example, dry skin types need to moisturize daily, but oily skin types do not.

Make an appointment with your dermatologist. Don't put it off and don't make excuses, especially if you spend time exercising outdoors. Keep track of any moles or unusual freckles or other concerns and bring them up at your appointment -- fit beauties know that a little scar from getting something suspicious removed is a small price to pay for your health!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Best Shapewear to Slim You Down

Filed under: Fit Beauty, Diet & Weight Loss

Despite our careful planning and best intentions, we've ended up with tins of Christmas cookies and candies lining our countertops. Hey, don't blame us -- blame our friendly neighbors and festive friends!

We're betting a lot of you are in the same gingerbread boat, and if you're anything like us, that means your plans for shaping up over the holiday season are being challenged. In fact, you'll probably end up with an extra pound or two by the time you've put away your presents and recycled the gift wrap.

There's no doubt in our mind that you'll get back on track and shape right up, but in the meantime, you've got places to go and people to see (like, ahem, a New Year's Eve party, perhaps?). Happily, there's a simple solution to any unwanted lumps or bumps -- shapewear!

For those who aren't familiar with different shapewear options, you should know that it's not just for love handles. You can find shapewear for tummy troubles, hips, booty, thighs, you name it. And you have choices as to how you wear it, as well.
If you've already selected your outfit, your best bet is to find shapewear that hides under your clothing. One of the biggest names in shapewear is Spanx, and what's really special about this brand is that it offers three levels of shaping, so whether you just want to smooth out bra strap bulges or need a bit (okay, a lot) more help, it has you covered.

You can also find shapewear that adds to your ensemble, like these Assets by Sara Blakely ribbed tights. They'll smooth your belly and keep your tush looking firm and fabulous -- plus, they're cute, and they'll keep you nice and warm. Or if you want a bit more coverage, try these ShapeFX push-up leggings.

Wait, what's that? You don't have anything to wear on New Year's Eve? Yummie Tummie has a few great clothing options, like an embellished tank and super-sassy tank dress.
Athleta

Not only is a scarf a quick, easy way make whatever you're wearing a little warmer, but it's also the simplest way to add serious style to an outfit -- any outfit. And that's pretty much perfect, because this time of year we're going from our cozy, heated homes to chilly outdoor temperatures to the sweaty air in the gym to ... well, you get the idea.

Fortunately, it couldn't be easier to ward off the winter chill while upping the style ante -- all you need is the right scarf. The only decision is: Which of the following best suits your style?

For the girl who wants to be cute and casual, this Polartec power stretch scarf ($29 at Athleta) is ideal. The slot style makes it easy to wear, and the plush material makes it a fabulous choice for before, after or during your workout.

The unisex circle scarf ($28 at American Apparel) is a little trendy but not intimidatingly so. I love its versatility: You can wrap it around lots of times to bundle yourself up tight or loop it loosely for an entirely different look. Or wrap it around your head to keep your ears from getting frostbite.

It doesn't get much more classic than cable-knit, but this cable-knit pocket scarf ($29.50 at Gap) has a little twist: handy pockets at the ends. Not only does it liven up the traditional design, but I can also see it being enormously useful to hold your gym pass and keys when you don't have pockets in your yoga pants.

To take the traditional look an extra step toward funky, this felted feathers scarf ($68 at Anthropologie) is just what you need. It's warm and cozy -- just what you need when facing the elements after a tough workout and locker room shower -- but the showy peacock shows that there's more to your personality than push-ups.
When your sports bra is hidden beneath a tee or tank, you probably don't give much thought to what it looks like. But, if you're wearing a loose fitting top or showing off your hard-earned abs by wearing just a sports bra, the style of the sports bra itself suddenly becomes considerably more important!

We checked out a few stylish sports bras to see if it's possible to have fashion and function in one. And, if we left your favorite brand or style off the list, let us know which sports bra you love in the comments!

BodyUp Fly Away Workout Top, $49
What we loved: This sports bra comes in a wide variety of color combinations. The inner mesh layer has thin criss-cross straps in the back, which are shown off nicely by the top layer's halter-style back. The fabric is soft and really comfortable, and we love getting the look of layers without putting in the effort of finding two coordinating pieces.
What we'd change: We wish the base layer was made of something a bit thicker and more supportive. While the support in this top is perfectly sufficient for lower-impact activities like Pilates, it wasn't terribly comfortable for jumping around.

BodyRock Imani Bra, $84
What we loved: We're aware that brightly colored leopard print sportswear isn't for everyone (especially when there are Swarovski crystals involved), but we think this top is gorgeous and fun. Additionally, it utilizes power mesh and spacers that keep your breasts in place, regardless of how vigorous your activity is. It also features two pockets on the back; one that's zippered and waterproof, and one that's open and would fit a small mp3 player.
What we'd change: We were really quite excited for the zippered side -- after all, there's nothing more frustrating than doing a tough shoulder workout and then struggling to take off your sports bra, right? Unfortunately, we found the zipper distracting and rather uncomfortable. They do offer 30 days to return the bras for a full refund, though, so we still think it's well worth checking out if you love the pattern as much as we do.

Kalyx Uplift Sports Bra, $42
What we loved: Normally, one wouldn't expect a sports bra with such a deep V in the front to offer a great deal of support, but we were pleasantly surprised. The bra created incredible cleavage (no, seriously, it's impressive) but we were able to run, jump and dance without anything shaking loose, or even coming close. Plus, the front clasp of the bra made it delightfully simple to remove.
What we'd change: The only problem we had was some mild discomfort from the front clasp when we did movements that required rolling up. It wasn't enough to keep us from wearing it, however.
It's always interesting to talk to fellow fit beauties about what they spend they money on when it comes to exercise. Some sports, like cycling, require more of an investment, regardless of how frugal you try to be. Of course, serious and competitive cyclists are more likely to spend more on the latest and greatest bike, but at every level, there's the opportunity to go big or save a few bucks.

Other sports, like running, tend to have fairly varied costs. In an informal poll among our running pals, shoes tended to be the thing that nobody skimped on, closely followed by sports bras (particularly for our bigger-busted friends). But "not skimping" had different meanings to different people. A new pair of $50 sneakers was a big purchase to some, while others sought out a specialty shoe and spent well more than $100.

This got us thinking about not only what fitness gear we spend our money on but why. As much as we like to look good (and oh, we do), we (almost) always put function squarely in front of fashion. That being said, we'll certainly shell out a few more dollars for something that fits well and is flattering at the same time, whether it's workout clothes, shoes or gear-like watches.

But what about actual equipment, like weights or yoga mats? Sure, these magnetic, stainless steel, intertwining dumbbells are a little on the silly side -- $180 for a pair of 2.2-pound weights is a bit much, no matter how aesthetically pleasing they might be. But would you pay a little extra for weights that looked attractive enough to keep out in the open? What about a step or balance board that fits in with the decor in your living room?

We have two questions for you. First, what are the things that you don't have a problem spending more money on? And then, how much would you spend on those things, and what would those items need to provide in order to convince you to part with your hard-earned cash?
As we enter October, our inboxes begin to overflow with invitations to various breast cancer awareness events. There are dinners and races and all of the reminders to support the breast cancer survivors in your life by sponsoring them on their walk. Needless to say, it takes a lot of energy just to get it all on the calendar, let alone actually participate.

And that's why the gods created retail therapy. This month, many of your favorite stores, brands and companies are donating a portion of proceeds to breast cancer causes. We've checked out a few of them and listed companies below that are not only making a contribution, but they're selling things we totally want to buy.

Under Armour's Power in Pink Program celebrates the women who use fitness and exercise in the fight against breast cancer, featuring real survivors in a national advertising campaign, countless partnerships with non-profit organizations, high school and collegiate Power in Pink games across the country, and a line of high-performing Power in Pink gear (from which 10 percent of proceeds will go to BCA-related organizations). Read and share stories or shop the Power in Pink collection.

New Balance has a partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure that has materialized in the form of the company's Lace Up For the Cure collection. The line of pink products includes everything from sneakers and flip flops to sports bras, shorts and tops, not to mention other accessories. New Balance will donate 5 percent of the suggested retail price of Lace Up For the Cure Items to the cause, with a minimum guaranteed donation of $500,000. (If you see something you like, be sure to check back Monday -- we'll be holding a giveaway featuring some great New Balance Lace Up For the Cure products!)

Oka b wants to donate 50,000 sandals to breast cancer patients undergoing treatment this month, and they need your help to do it. For every pair of sandals purchased online, a pair of popular Madison slides will be given to breast cancer patient, so the more you buy, the more the give.

Oakley has always offered products in its breast cancer awareness category to support the Young Survivors Coalition, a non-profit network dedicated to assisting young women affected by breast cancer. As a partner of the YSC, Oakley donates $20 from each sale of special edition goggles and glasses, like the Discreet, to the cause.

BodyRock Sport is donating 10 percent of proceeds from the sale of select pink-colored bras and headphones to support Susan G. Komen For the Cure. There are six bras and two earbuds to choose from -- with all the styles and patterns, there's no doubt you'll find just what you're looking for.
You don't walk around in yoga pants and sneakers all the time, but that doesn't mean you leave your fitness-minded side behind when you slip into stilettos or jeans. What if there were a way to incorporate your devotion to fitness into your stylish sensibilities?

As is so often the case in life, the answer is accessories. The right fitness-themed jewelry will let you show off the fact that you're both fashionable and fit -- and often at a totally reasonable price.

Our friends over at Fit Bottomed Girls introduced us to The Silver Maple, which specializes in fitness jewelry. We immediately fell in love with the idea of commemorating a fitness event with a piece of jewelry and decided we probably needed to celebrate our next big race with a customized necklace. But before we started counting out letters and working on a design, we thought we'd check out what else is available out there.

Runners, you guys really clean up -- there are tons of amazing options. This Love to Run Marathons necklace by Winterberry Jewelry ($22, Etsy) is cute and casual, while this Marathon 26.2 necklace by RunWildJewelry ($39, Etsy) is a little more artsy. This Run ring by Nora McNamara ($20, Etsy) makes a subtle but unmistakable statement about what you love to do. Our real favorite, however, has to be the Marathon Man necklace by Starrbeads ($34, Etsy). It's such a simple design and doesn't immediately jump out as a fitness piece, but it still gets the message across beautifully.

In more of a triathlon state of mind? You'll definitely dig this Tri Tag by flyjewelry ($70, Etsy). It's shiny and pretty, sure, but we're really drawn to the funky style of the pictures. Or, for a slightly different look, have a peek at this two-tone Triathlon sterling silver charm by JessicasGifts ($16.50, Etsy).

Consider yourself a gym rat? Gym Gems has lots of lovely accessories, but we're pretty partial to the Dumbbell ring ($65-$285, depending on your choice of metal). Then again, we also like the way this Jump Rope pendant by pinktophat ($20, Etsy) makes you look twice to figure out just what it is, but once you see the jump rope, you can't help but smile. And who can forget one of the latest trends, the kettlebell? This sterling silver kettlebell necklace by Fashletics ($65, Etsy) has an industrial but unmistakably stylish look.

Yogis, don't worry. We didn't forget about you! This Square Glass Tile Lotus Zen pendant by artellect ($18, Etsy) is bright and happy and sure to get noticed. And we're a bit partial to the Mountain Pose necklace by makadesigns ($45, Etsy) for it's subtle message and hammered silver design.

When setting out your clothes for tomorrow's early-morning workout, you're probably quite particular about a number of things. A supportive sports bra and undies that won't ride up are always the first items we pick up, followed by a favorite workout top (has to be a tank with some shape but not too tight) and, most likely, a perfect pair of black workout capris (but not the ones that stretch out and get baggy and not the ones that are too thin and show a panty line). Add our go-to headband and sneakers (which, of course, we chose after much deliberation at a specialty running store) and we just need to grab one of the 25 pairs of white socks out of our drawer and we're good to go, right?

Hold up. If we're going to be so darn picky about what we put on the rest of our bodies, why are we so nonchalant about our socks? It really doesn't make sense. Now, we're not going to pay more for something just because, but if there's a more attractive option that's also more high tech, well, shouldn't we at least consider the next level? Of course we should. So we did; here are three options for your stylish consideration.

Under Armour Kris Concealer
In the '80s, did you wear the multilayered, tri-colored scrunch socks? With sparkles? So did we -- they had to match our L.A. Gears with the four different shoelaces, after all. But this ain't the '80s; now, when it comes to your feet, the minimal look is in, and you can't find a better option than the Under Armour Kris Concealer ($11.99 for two pair).

First off, they look cool with their black/pink or black/turquoise color scheme. But more importantly, they're super comfortable -- and nobody was more surprised than we were. They're extremely low rise, and when you put them on, they feel like they're going to pop right off. However, once you put on a shoe on top of the sock, it stays in place perfectly (how, you ask? Magic is our best guess) but is hidden from view.

PowerSox CoolMax Cushion Lo-Cut
For a subtle hint of style, the CoolMax Cushion Lo-Cut in light pink or light blue ($7.49 for three pairs) is a great option. This affordable sock is by PowerSox, which is a GoldToe brand. And, as you probably know, GoldToe has been in the sock business forever. It's not just the pretty colors we're digging, though. The sock features a ventilated top to let your skin breathe, CoolMax fabric for moisture management and an arch brace for added support.

Injinji Performance Series EcoMade CoolMax
Injinji does a great job of making the most functional footwear really fun, and the Performance Series EcoMade CoolMax toe sock ($14 each) is a perfect example. As a toe sock, it's automatically interesting, and the rainbow striping takes us back to our days of idolizing Punky Brewster. But it's the quick-drying, eco-friendly fabric made from repurposed recycled plastic water bottles and postindustrial waste that really has us wiggling our toes in anticipation.

Athleta

As we've mentioned before, one of the biggest hindrances to morning workouts is getting ready for work/school/life afterward. For most of us, it's hard enough to get up an hour earlier than usual to fit in our workout, and we don't want to add any more time than absolutely necessary for post-workout beautification!

Hair can prove to be the biggest challenge of all, especially if you find yourself in between styles or with partially grown-out bangs. Making your do look done is almost impossible without a ton of time, but if you have the right accessories, it can be a snap.

For a headband that works at the gym but doesn't look out of place elsewhere, we're loving the Pilayo braid headband ($12, Athleta). It's super functional for workouts, but its retro vibe and gorgeous greenish hue make us want to wear it out and about as well.

If your day calls for something a little more professional and polished, you can't go wrong with Ban.do's Heart L headband ($35, Lock & Mane). The beaded peacock feather gives it a little edge, but the colors are low key enough that you can totally sport it at the office. Plus, it works equally well with a sleek pony, a frizzy bun or loose hair.

For ladies with long hair, this Tasha Chiffon flower clip ($38, Nordstrom) is a wicked-cute option. When you've got an accessory that's this bold and feminine, you can get away with messy tresses tied back in a sloppy chignon and look oh-so-chic.

Don't have time to wash your hair but worried about your greasy roots showing? If you have the option to keep things casual, we can't think of a better option than this adorable Consomme cap ($48, Anthropologie). It's girly and sweet but totally practical; wear it with cropped jeans and a button-down or with a floaty dress and cardi. We promise it'll work!

Headbands are always a great way to pull back your bangs, and we keep coming back to this taffeta wire headwrap ($3.80, Forever 21). Subtle it is not, but we've always said subtle was overrated anyway. It is funky and attention getting, and it'll get the job done. Besides, who's going to pay attention to whether you've perfectly blown out the back of your hair when you've got something so bright and shiny going on in the front!

If you're not sure you want to go with something quite so bold but still want something feminine and funky, look for some small hair clips that suit your personal style. We're digging these Tiger Lily hair clips ($18, ticklebean on Etsy) because they bring enough of their own pizazz that we don't have to worry about what we've done with the rest of our hair. Use them to hold your bangs to the side or secure a few small braids back into a ponytail.

Of course, every girl needs the basics, and a true fit beauty's gym bag is never without bobby pins. They're cheap ($3.19 for 50, soap.com), they're easy to carry around, and they can be used in a multitude of ways. Like above, you can use them to brush bangs aside or hold back some braids, or you can get creative by using them to create a "poof" in the front or a haphazard French twist in the back. You can even use the bobby pins themselves as part of the design, as Diane Kruger did last summer.

Fact: If you work out frequently, you're going to have to deal with stinky clothes. If you go straight home after exercising and do laundry frequently, this might not be much of a problem: You simply take off the sweaty, smelly shirt and get it washed in short order. But if you have to stick those clothes in a bag and haul them to work, it can be a bit of an issue. Maybe you don't think so, but you might want to check with the gal who shares your office.

Folks deal with offending odors in different ways. Sprinkling baby powder in your smelly sneakers is a tried-and-true fix used by some of us here at That's Fit. Dina Caperhart of West Palm Beach, Fla., recommends placing scrunched-up newspaper in your shoes to absorb the odor. Helene Byrne of Oakland, Calif., relies on baby wipes, saying, "Not only are they great for a quick body wipe-down after exercise, [but] I use them to wipe out the inside of my workout shoes. They kill the germs that cause odors, and shoes dry out fast too.

If you have a place to hang your clothes, you might take a tip from Jeremy Litchfield of Brunswick, Maine. As founder of Atayne, he's interested in both odor control and the impact of clothing on the environment and said, "[C]onsumer care (washing and drying) accounts for about 80 percent of a garment's total impact on the environment." His suggestion? "We tell people that after a workout, they should take their clothing with them in the shower, rinse and ring it out. This will rinse a lot of the sweat and bacteria out. Depending on your individual body chemistry (vegetarians like myself tend to have less odor), you can go several days without needing to wash your clothing. I typically go a week or more, rinsing, ringing out and hanging to dry."

There are a variety of products on the market to deal with this issue. Recently, we tried out a few items from Fresh Wave. The brand offers an odor-eliminating spray to take care of items like shoes that don't fit well in the machine, and there's also an additive to use in the wash (or on your carpet or in your gym bag) to really get the smell out. Our favorite item, however, had to be the Pearl Packs. They're small, portable and really work. The fact that all of the products are natural and nontoxic doesn't hurt, either.

The one thing we beg you not to do, however, is to cover up the stink. Spritzing a strong-smelling body spray all over your clothes and shoes doesn't mask the odor; it just adds another layer and might even aggravate your office mate's allergies.

Let's face it -- packing is a challenge, especially now that so many airlines are charging for a single checked bag. And for those of us who try to fit a few workouts into our travel plans, it's even more difficult, because you have to add in shoes, shorts and sports bras, at the very least.

Packing pros employ several tricks to get the most out of their allotted luggage. After watching the packing tips on "Elle Beauty Sculpt," starring Brooklyn Decker, I got to thinking about some of the tricks I've used to get everything in my small carry-on (and I'm cheap, so the majority of the time, I find a way to make it work).

Whether you're traveling for a race or just plan on doing a little sweating between cocktails on your summer vacation, the tips below will help you get there with as few bags as possible.

No single-duty clothes. Look at what you'll be doing and take clothes that work for multiple activities. That comfy cotton sundress could function as a beach cover-up during the day, but pair it with nice shoes, a wrap or a cardigan, and some jewelry, and you've got something to wear to dinner! When it comes to workout clothes, opt for quick-drying fabrics that you can rinse out and hang to dry after each workout, so you can wear the same thing multiple times.

Don't waste space. Shoes tend to take up the most space in your suitcase, but you can use that space a little better by stuffing your shoes with smaller items -- think socks, undies, rolled-up tank tops. You should still only bring the shoes you absolutely need (I mean, if you never wear those four-inch stilettos at home, do you really think you're going to wear them on your trip?) -- why waste space if you don't have to? Keep in mind that rolling can also save room. Play around while you pack; you'll be surprised at how many little rolled-up items you can fit in barely there spaces!

Wear what you can. If you absolutely have to take your big boots, wear them on the plane. Yes, it might be a bit more of a hassle when going through security, but you'll save a ton of room in your bag. Same thing goes for big coats, jeans, sweaters and purses.

Leave the Caboodles at home (people still use those, right?). If you're a beauty junkie, you might be tempted to pack a separate bag filled with shampoo, gel, sprays, moisturizer, foundation, makeup remover and more. But, if you're bringing just a carry-on, you have to deal with the 3-1-1 rule (3.4-ounce /100-milliliter bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; one bag per customer placed in screening bin).

The "Beauty Sculpt" bonus feature makes a great point: Rather than trying to move things from your toiletries bag into the plastic baggie just for the flight, pack everything in there from the start. Be honest about whether you really need to bring two shades of foundation and four different lip glosses (I won't blame you if you decide you do. Honest.). One thing that works well for me is that I never pack shampoo. I find that for a week or so, even the cheapest hotel shampoo will work as long as I have some decent conditioner with me.

By narrowing down what you're packing, using all the space in your suitcase, wearing your bulkier items and planning ahead, you'll save room (and money!) on any trip you take. Who knows? That new found space might just allow you to pack a jump rope or resistance band. Got more tips? Be sure to share in the comments!

And if you're looking for ways to travel in the name of training, check out these charitable options.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cute and Comfy Post-Workout Shoes

The only thing that feels better than a nice, leisurely stretch after a super strenuous workout is taking off those constricting sneakers. Don't get me wrong -- I love the shoes I work out in. They're comfortable, durable, and they fit wonderfully. But, after 60 minutes of running, jumping, planking, kicking and whatever else I've done, I'm ready to free my toes.

Personally, I prefer to do this before I leave the gym, especially if I have any stops to make on the way home (and I always have stops to make). And since the grocery store frowns upon bare feet, that means I need some shoes, which are going to have to be open-toe because the absolute last thing I want to do at this point is put on another pair of trainers.

Sure, I could put on my regular casual sandals, but leather and sweat and dirt? Ew, no thanks. Havianas (as I've mentioned before) are a popular option. The rubber sole and straps mean your sweat is, well, no sweat, and for being rubber, they're really quite stylish, not to mention small and easy to stash in your gym bag.

But what if you want a little more out of your shoe? Say ... a massage? Back in high school, I had a pair of the adidas adissage slides (just like every other athlete in the late '90s). The little nubs (or pegs) are designed to gently massage your feet, but I always found I had to wear socks with them to avoid feeling like I was walking on a bed of nails. I love the idea, but it just never quite worked for me.

What does work for me is a shoe That's Fit was recently sent to test out: the OKA b. Malia flip flop ($35). The antimicrobial, waterproof sandal uses the principals of reflexology and ergonomics to provide an extra comfy fit, and the small massage beads offer a little stimulation to the bottom of the foot without causing any irritation or pain. And if you're worried about dirt, don't -- these are machine washable.

I love the flowery styles, but there are tons of choices available. You can opt for ribbons, jewels, bright colors, subdued neutrals, slides, thongs, heels and flats. There are even options for the guys!

OKA b. shoes are even recyclable -- you can send them in when you're done, and they'll be ground up and mixed in with virgin material to make a new pair.
Fact: You don't have to be good at golf to look great on the course. Trust us on this one. But, for those of us who don't golf frequently, investing in a wardrobe of attractive golf-specific clothes can get pricey. The solution: Find clothes that look as good on the greens as they do on the street. We tried out a few stylish selections to make sure they made the cut, and we're confident you'll find an option below that suits your fancy.

For a ladylike look without sacrificing comfort, we're loving some of the active skorts at Athleta. The Out About Skort ($49) features a fairly straight cut but still provides room for you to move easily. The Whatever Skort ($49) has a slightly more "twirly girly" look, but once again, makes athletic movements a breeze.

Maybe you're just not comfortable swinging away in a skirt or skort -- no problem! SmartWool (yes, that's right -- wool in the summer) offers a Bermuda short that's sure to be up your alley. W's Straightline Short ($80) comes in two different, subtle plaids (the only pattern for golf, if you ask us) and has a 10-inch inseam, so you'll feel fully covered no matter how low you crouch to read the green.

While you're over at SmartWool, take a gander at its tops. It's not just about cut in golf clothes -- it's also about texture and material, which is why lightweight wool is such a great option. If you want to show off your arms, W's Microweight Tank ($50) is a slim-fitting, comfortable option. We found it a bit on the sheer side, however, so you might want to look at layering another tank with it.

Some golf courses have stricter rules than others on what should be worn, so if you'd rather keep it a bit more conservative, we're loving the Icebreaker Club Polo ($89.99). Made of incredibly lightweight Merino wool, the polo features a slim fit, flattering seams, and a cute little lamb logo on the chest. Talk about perfectly preppy!

It's easy to feel like you're limited to two options in workout clothing -- baggy sweats or revealing spandex. Even yoga pants can give a little too much away (visible panty lines, anyone?). But if you don't feel like showing off what your mama gave you, you don't have to banish yourself to the realm of oversized t-shirts and basketball shorts. There are plenty of options to help you look great and keep it modest.

Let's start with the first layer -- your bra. There's nothing like finishing a tough run at the gym, only to look in the mirror and realize your, uh, "headlights" are on, full blast. Come on, you know exactly what we're talking about. Even a big t-shirt can't hide this problem -- trust us. So what's a girl to do? The right bra will go a long way toward solving this niptacular problem. The Moving Comfort Vixen sports bra ($38) gives great support but, just as important, the front is made with a thicker material to make anything that, you know, pops up be a little less obvious.

Now, when it comes to shirts, there are two common modesty issues. The first is that the neckline comes too low and shows off more cleavage than one would like. If you want the tighter tank style without showing off so much of the girls, this Goddess Pose Tank from Shabby Apple ($36) is cute and provides ample coverage.

If you're more concerned about the material clinging to the lumps and bumps you might have around the midsection, check out Athleta's Terra Tank ($39). We received this tank to review and have found ourselves wearing it everywhere from the track to Zumba class to a neighborhood barbecue due to its flattering cut.

And, of course, we can't forget about our bottom half. Sure, you could wear shorts or pants, but what we're loving is a nice, flattering skirt. This Seamless Skort by Moving Comfort ($46) fits a little looser than others we've worn, not to mention a bit longer. That means no unsightly underwear lines -- and you get to cover those troublesome upper thighs without sacrificing style or femininity!

Here are even more tips on dressing to flatter your figure.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dressing to Flatter Your Figure

Filed under: Fit Beauty, Diet & Weight Loss

We have a hard truth for you, ladies. Chances are, not every trend looks good on you. Wait -- what do you mean you're not shocked?

While many of us know we should be dressing to flatter the shape of our body, we don't always know where to start. Looking fabulous can be simple, but there are two rules to follow, Shabby Apple's Athelia Wooley told us. "First, you have to figure out your body type. If you don't know what it is, you can't dress for it!" she said. "And second, only buy clothes for that body type. Then you always look great."

Wooley should know a thing or two about this. As one of the founders of Shabby Apple, she is very familiar with the online store's "Fit to Flatter" tool, which uses three questions to figure out what dress will look best on you.

"Basically, we're trying to find out where you gain weight," she explained. For example, if you tend to pack the pounds on in the hip and thigh area, you're a pear, and if it all goes to the middle, you're an apple.

To figure out which dresses work best for certain body types, Wooley and her business partner Emily McCormick don't leave anything to chance. "We actually have fit models try on each dress," McCormick told us. "We bring in people with all body types. Some of what we find is really predictable -- an empire waist looks good on an apple shape, and a sleeveless dress really shows off the arms -- but others are more surprising. The Cleopatra dress (pictured above) is great for almost everyone!"

While this tool makes shopping at Shabby Apple a cinch, it doesn't necessarily help elsewhere. A few other online stores have helpful tools, like the "Shop by Body Type" option at the Nordstrom Dress Shop, but not everyone knows what their body type is. Perhaps you've recently slimmed down, or have started putting on weight in a previously fat-free area. Maybe you've got an athletic build, but also have curves. What's the best way to determine the shape of your body?

To find out, we turned to Sarah Shah, style expert, wardrobe consultant and author of "Dress Yourself Skinny: Dressing The Body You Have To Look Like The Body You Want." Even she admitted that determining your body type isn't easy. "Every expert and magazine has a different way of classifying body types," she said. "Some use fruit (apple, pear, banana), some use geometric shapes (circle, rectangle, triangles) and others use body parts. The bottom line is that every woman is comparing her figure to the ideal female figure -- the hourglass.

"The ideal figure has these proportions -- shoulders and hips about the same width, waist about 3/4 the width of your hips and shoulders, and the distance from the top of your head to hipbones is the same as the distance from the hipbones to your toes," Shah explained.

"The easiest way to determine your body type is to trace yourself and measure your proportions. Lay down on the back of a piece of wrapping paper wearing your underwear and have someone trace you. Measure the width of your shoulders, bust, waist and hips and the distances from the top of your head to your hip bones and from your hip bones to your toes." This allows you to compare your body to an ideal hourglass and determine what your true body type is.

Shah offered a few other pieces of advice that are important to note, regardless of your body shape.

On bras: "The wrong bra allows your breasts to sag and obscures your waistline making you look bigger than you are. A great bra will lift your breasts up and away from your waist. Differentiating your bustline from your waistline will make you look 10 to 20 pounds slimmer immediately."

On body shapers: "The wrong body shaper will make you look fatter. A lumpy body appears to be fat, while a smooth body appears to be lean and fit. If your body shaper creates any rolls or lumps by squeezing flesh out the top or bottom, it will actually make you look fatter. To look slim, buy your body shaper one size bigger than normal so it lays smoothly on your body, smooths out lumps and cellulite, and firms jiggles."

On skinny jeans: "Skinny jeans and leggings make everyone's butt look big. Wear them if you have a tiny butt and want it to look bigger. Otherwise, skip them."

On slimming colors: "Black isn't the only slimming color. Any dark color such as, chocolate brown, burgundy, navy blue, charcoal gray or eggplant will create the same slimming illusion as black."

On models in magazines: "If an outfit in a magazine makes the model look like a size 0 or 2, then it will probably look good on you. If the model looks like she's a size 8 or 10 in an outfit, that outfit will make you look twice as big as you are."

On baggy clothes: "The other common mistake is wearing clothing that is too big in an effort to camouflage imperfections. Women often wear over-sized shirts or jackets to try to cover up a pouchy tummy or heavy hips. The big shirt or boxy jacket does cover the rolls but it also adds volume to your body making you look 10, 20 or even 30 pounds heavier than you are. The most flatting clothing for any body type is clothing that is tight enough to skim the body and show off your silhouette and loose enough that it doesn't pull, gape or grab a roll."
