I'm a massive proponent of training with our own body weight. For most of us, it's the heaviest weight we will ever lift. From my eyes as a fitness trainer, we are all just a bunch of massive dumbbells. Isn't that nice of me to say? So my little dumbbells ... I have a cool new tool for you! The Lebert Equalizer will add some fun and give you a bunch of neat things to do with that delightfully heavy body of yours.

The Lebert Equalizer is perfect for pull-ups, push-ups, dips, decline rows, scull crushers, planks and tons of other fantastic strength and cardiovascular training exercises as well. It's light-weight, portable, versatile and not too pricey. For $99.99 you'll get a set of Equalizers along with a free training DVD and a poster to guide you while you train.

Much to their delight (or disgust), many of my personal training clients ages 16 to 62 have been subjected (tortured) with the Equalizers. I kid! The typical exercises one would do with these tools are hard though -- in a good way. My intermediate/advanced fitness level clients have loved the challenges put forth to them each session. I would not allow someone with very little strength to use them though, because without great balance, the Equalizers wobble a bit. Having said that, people wobble on the BOSU, stability ball, and lots of other fitness tools. Balance is an integral part of functional fitness training. I don't reference the wobble to deter you. I just want you to be extra aware not to allow Great Aunt Sue to use them.

Continue reading Fitz's Cool Tools: Chisel Your Body with The Lebert Equalizer

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What's the most important meal of the day for athletes?

Filed under: Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Healthy Kids, Book Reviews, Cellulite, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

Trivial Pursuit Question: What's the most important meal of the day for athletes? If you answered 'breakfast,' then off to your nutrition tutor, you just flunked.

According to Dr. Jose Antonio, the most important 'meal' of the day is what you consume before, during, and after exercise!

Dr. Antonio gave a seminar to a packed house at the National Strength and Conditioning Association Conference at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas this week. He showed proof that if you consume a combination of protein and carbohydrate during the pre-, during, and post-workout period, you'll put on lean body mass better and lose body fat. Breakfast doesn't do that my friend. Dr. Antonio calls this the science of nutrient timing.

So when you re-take that quiz, make sure you answer Before, During, and After exercise! Then you get to go to the head of the class

Continue reading What's the most important meal of the day for athletes?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Randy Pausch of "The Last Lecture" gets recognized by the President

Filed under: Healthy Habits, Healthy Relationships, Stress Reduction, Work/Home Balance, Womens Health, HealthWatch, Celebrities and Entertainment, Book Reviews, Healthy Events, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Motivation, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

Although I will expand on Randy Pausch, I imagine you're already well aware of who he is. He's the unstoppable man, who has inspired millions and millions of people around the world by his passion for life while he fights an almost impossible battle with pancreatic cancer. I learned of Dr. Pausch many months ago as Diane Sawyer interviewed him on ABC. He blew me away with his humor, dedication to his family, and outrageous courage.

His journey since his diagnosis put him on stage at the University he was a professor at, Carnegie Mellon, for his Last Lecture. This Last Lecture made it to YouTube (embedded below) and then became a best selling book, The Last Lecture. His outlook on life and stories of his childhood and career have inspired other cancer patients to fight harder and regular people to just be better. Although he's truly only concerned with getting his message across to his three young children, he's positively affected millions of others as a side effect.

Recently, President Bush was compelled to write to Randy Pausch. This can't change Randy's fate with cancer, but as a representative of the American people ... it was a fantastic way to show our appreciation for Randy setting a new standard for 'goodness' and dedicating his life to teaching others.

The videos were filmed for Tracy Benham's Sports Health and Exercise (SHE) company which is known for quick, smart, energetic and fun health and fitness tips from some of the foremost experts in the world.

We created a bunch of strength training and cardiovascular workouts which you'll be able to train with at home, as soon as they are released this summer. One of my favorite parts of the videos was being able to include my fellow blogger and friend, Kristen Seymour. Kristen has trained with me off and on for a few years, and truly has amazing levels of strength and endurance. She also has a perfect smile and looks brilliant on camera.

We were also blessed with the opportunity to film in one of the most beautiful gyms in the world. The Gainesville Health and Fitness Center generously opened their doors to myself, SHE and our team. The facilities are stunning, and all of the equipment is top of the line. Who could ask for more?

Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.

I'm thrilled to death about my guest this week, Dr. Mehmet Oz., vice chair of surgery and professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University. I, along with millions of others met Dr. Oz a couple of years ago when he started appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show as her health expert. Kind of like the way she introduced Dr. Phil; except that Dr. Oz is truly brilliant in a non-subjective kind of way, easy on the eyes, and easy to understand.

I've been teaching fitness for almost two decades and have earned a Master's Degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences. I'm always hungry for new and relevant information. Rarely I find it. But, Dr. Oz always teaches me something new. He breaks highly advanced medical concepts down, so that everyone can understand them and how they affect our lives.

Dr. Oz is a major force in the push for real deal, gimmick-free healthy living. Mehmet is one of Oprah's favorite things, and a host of his own talk show on the Oprah and Friends radio network. He has a series on the Discovery Health Channel called You:Staying Young. He also happens to have best selling books out: You:Staying Young and You:On a Diet. I'd like to shrink down small and run around in his brain for a while to absorb all that he has to offer; either that or be his apprentice for a week. Since I probably can't do that, I invited him for an interview. Enjoy it. I did!

Fitz: How did you make the transition from cardiologist to wellness guru?

Dr. Oz: I spent the first few years of my career doing general medicine; you have to learn all other aspects of being a doctor before becoming a cardiologist. I got a great education on how the entire body works. Medicine is somewhat of a narcissistic profession, and I've spent a lot of my life keeping myself healthy. I saw the lifestyle mistakes others were making which led them to me, and I started to feel kind of guilty for not sharing what I knew about health and fitness. The stuff I've been pursuing my whole life! I lettered in eleven sports; everything from water polo to football. I love how you feel after working out; there's a lot to learn in life from pushing your body.

Fitz: How old are you?

Dr. Oz: I'm 47.

Fitz: Do you have children?

Dr. Oz: I have four kids. Ages twenty-one, seventeen, thirteen, and eight.

Continue reading Celebrity Fitzness Report: Oprah's health expert, Dr. Mehmet Oz

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Cardio Free Diet Part 2

Filed under: Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Book Reviews, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

I blogged awhile back on The Cardio Free Diet, and just heard back from a woman who said she was featured on the 20/20 segment in which the diet was featured. She had success with it, and is very much in defense of it. Unfortunately she didn't respond to my blog in the 'comments' section, so you can't see what she wrote, but that's really neither here nor there.

If you're going to read my blogs, you're going to hear the voice of someone who's been in the industry for almost two decades, has the Master's Degree, etc. I will NEVER support a diet. Diet to me, means temporary lifestyle changes which normally lead to only temporary results. I support the teaching of great habits, which over time will lead you to happiness and longevity in the skin you are in. There is no gimmick to it. It is what it is.

My stand on the Cardio Free Diet remains. It disappoints me. Physical fitness is comprised of four elements. Proper nutrition, cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. I do not believe one can be truly fit without any of those elements. Exercise your brains out, yet eat crap all day......not fit. Strong and flexible without the ability to climb a few flights of stairs (general healthy adult).....not fit.

Continue reading The Cardio Free Diet Part 2

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The ten most harmful health gadgets

Filed under: Book Reviews, Fitness, Reviews & Products
Pcmag.com just released a list of the ten most harmful health gadgets. One item making the list was this Bicycle Forest Treadmill Bike. It basically lets you pay $2500 to run down the street. Their slogan is "Take your favorite gym workout outside!" Um, I think that's been done before, and they call it jogging. And putting aside the fact that it's nearly pointless (though the manufacturer does point out that this product protects your feet from "dirt and other contaminants commonly found on the earth's surface") it's less than nimble in situations involving traffic, loose gravel, and, well... turning.

The list is also full of other devices I'd be too afraid to try, including a head massager that would give me electric chair nightmares, a very scary looking device which claims to enhance your bust, and my personal favorite, a product called Snore Stopper. It looks like a watch but works by giving a person a "gentle electronic acupuncture massage" when they start to snore. So, it's kind of like a shock collar for people that snore?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
