According to the American Heart Association, two of the top three killers in the country -- heart disease and stroke -- can be attributed to poor cholesterol management.

Most adults should keep their cholesterol levels below 200 mg/dL. Although some turn to medication to lower their cholesterol, the American Heart Association encourages people to exercise and follow the nutritional guidelines that they have set forth to keep their cholesterol levels -- especially their LDL levels (the bad kind) in check. The ideal LDL level for adults it 130 or less. A level greater than 160 may be considered a health problem.

Among the top foods to avoid to keep cholesterol in check are egg yolks, whole-milk dairy products, meat and fish. Managing your cholesterol can be tricky, but the key is to focus on the type of fats you're eating as well as the amounts. Since your daily goal should be ingesting less than 25 to 35 percent of your daily calories from fat, you'll need to look at the amount of fat you're consuming.

As you reduce bad fats, including saturated fats and trans fats, you should reduce your LDL as well. In addition to the fats in meat, dairy products and eggs, saturated fats also include vegetable oils and some tropical oils such as palm, palm kernels and coconut oil are high in saturated fat.

Fiber, which is found in whole grains and berries -- among other foods, is key to lowering your cholesterol, too.

Most importantly, as you strive to lower your cholesterol, you must remember that you cannot use a one-size-fits-all approach. Although you may alter your eating habits, your body will react slightly differently when compared to another person on the same diet. This is why it's important to discuss how to lower your cholesterol with your doctor and get a diet that is tailored to your specific needs.

One remedy to unwind involves progressive relaxation techniques.

If you're new to progressive relaxation techniques, which involves a meditation-like focus, there are several that you can try. Lie on your bed, stomach facing up. Close your eyes and focus on the weight in your feet. First, relax your feet by focusing on your toes. Feel their weight. Then, progress to your ankles, concentrating on how they feel. Next, sense the weight in your knees and let them sink into your bed. Continue moving your focus upwards toward your quads and thighs. Let them sink into your bed, too.

Once your legs are relaxed, shift your focus to your abdomen and chest. Deepen your breathing, allowing yourself to feel your abdomen and chest sink into bed with each breath. Next, sense the weight in your buttocks. They should relax as they sink into your bed. Move onto your hands and upper body. You should feel your upper arms, shoulders, neck, head and skull. Sense each and consciously relax them and let them sink into your bed. As the last step in this exercise, you'll relax your mouth and jaw, eyes and eyelids, face and cheeks. Mentally scan your body to see if any muscles are still tight. If they are, focus on relaxing them.

Another progressive relaxation technique involves drawing tension from the rest of your body by tensing and relaxing your toes. Here's how: As you lie on your back, close your eyes and sense your toes, pull all toes back toward your face. Slowly count to 10. Relax your toes, count to 10 again and repeat the cycle.

Another old stand-by for relaxation involves breathing. Lie on your back and relax your body, inhale through your nose. Take a deep breath, filling the lower part of your chest, then the middle and, finally, the top. The breath should last eight to 10 seconds. Hold your breath, quietly relax and exhale. Wait a few seconds and repeat.

If you're not a fan of deep breathing exercises, try the quiet ears exercise. First, lie on your back with your eyes shut. Place your hands behind your head to ensure your hands are relaxed. Place your thumbs in your ears to close the ear canal. You should hear a high-pitched sound. This sound will ring for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Once you have finished listening to the sound, drop your arms to your side, actively relaxing them before you fall asleep.

If you would like to try more activities that will help you relax on a daily basis, try yoga or Pilates.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Natural Weight Loss Aids

A new diet pill or miracle weight-loss product seems to hit the shelves every day -- only to be quickly followed by news about health risks, or worse, a recall from the FDA. So what else can you do to aid your dieting efforts when the tried and true method of eating less and moving more isn't enough, but you don't want to resort to risky diet supplements? A few natural remedies, when combined with proper nutrition and exercise, may be just the answer.

Triphala

Translated as "three fruits" (harada, amla and bihara), triphala is an Indian herb that's known for being a strong antioxidant and also helpful in regulating the digestive tract. It's part of the Ayurvedic herb family, and a three month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that Ayurvedic ingredients produced significant weight loss, as well as improvements in cholesterol levels. It's also a bowel regulator, so for those who tend to get constipated and need to "go" more often, this might be something to look into to flatten your tummy, says Enos.

Green Tea

While green tea is known for its antioxidant properties, it's also touted for its calorie-burning abilities. Research has shown that the catechins in green tea help boost the metabolism. A Japanese study claimed that drinking five cups of green tea a day may burn as many as 70 to 80 extra calories daily. Bethenny Frankel, author of "Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinny Girl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting" and star of The Real Housewives of New York City, adds the common-sense factor: "People often drink fattening drinks out of thirst. Hydrate to the best of your ability. Even if it's tea or club soda or seltzer with a splash of juice, force yourself to hydrate."

Omega-3s

"Including these types of fats into your daily diet can help trigger your body's fat-burning abilities. They can help stabilize your blood sugar," says Deborah Enos, C.N. of TheHolisticOption.com and author of "Weight a Minute! Transform Your Health in 60 Seconds a Day." Opt for high-quality omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in flaxseed, walnuts, salmon and fish oils. The result of incorporating this nutritional superstar into your diet? "If your blood sugars are stabilized, then you will feel fuller longer. If you feel fuller, guess what? Less mindless eating or overeating."

Cayenne Pepper

Capsaicin, an active component in cayenne pepper, may promote the feeling of fullness and suppress hunger, according to a recent Danish study. "Cayenne pepper is a fantastic and healthy spice to add to your cooking. It can help increase blood flow, and some research even states that it can be a boost to your metabolism," Enos explains. However, buyer beware: Enos adds that the Master Cleanse, which includes a drink made with cayenne and was famously used by Beyoncé for her dramatic "Dreamgirls" weight loss, is another story. The diet is extremely low in calories (less than 1,000 each day), and "there is no protein, no fiber, very few vitamins and minerals."

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, which is made from pulverized apples, is rich in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and dietary fiber, all of which assist in detoxifying the liver and taking off weight. Ingesting too much, however, may irritate your digestive tract, since it's heavy in acetic acid. You should consume no more than two tablespoons a day and consider diluting it in a glass of water. Enos notes that it's best for people with sensitive stomachs to avoid apple cider vinegar, and that it may interact with certain medications. So check with your doctor before adding it to your diet.

Glucomannan

"This comes from the root of a fiber-rich plant called the Asian konjac plant, also known as the 'elephant yam'," says Enos. Usually found in pill form, when taken with water, glucomannan forms a gel that may create a feeling of fullness in your gut. Glucomannan also helps delay the absorption of glucose from the intestines. Studies have shown glucomannan is effective in decreasing body weight. "In general," Enos adds, "eating more fiber will make you feel fuller."

Cha de Bugre

Extracted from a Brazilian tree, cha de bugre is becoming more prevalent in weight loss products, due to its appetite-suppressant, energy-boosting and diuretic properties. With a fruit that is similar to the coffee bean, it may be roasted and used as a substitute for coffee. However, as with any diet supplement that promises speedy weight loss, be weary of cha de burge pills that make similar claims. "Brazilian women who may enjoy cha de burge as part of their healthful diets are also eating fresh fruit, lean meats, vegetables and eating small portions. This is the key to true weight loss and maintenance," explains Meredith Sobel, MS, CHHC, AADP, an integrative health and wellness coach of Sobel Wellness Health Counseling.

Acai

This Brazilian fruit was thrown into the spotlight when Oprah's nutrition guru, Dr. Nicholas Perricone, announced that it was one of his top 10 super foods. Since then, many acai supplements have hit the market claiming to be weight-loss wonder products. The jury is out on whether these can help you shed pounds, but the fruit itself -- which is most easily found frozen -- is low in sugar and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, says Sobel. If you're trying to lose weight, acai berries make a great post-gym snack or addition to your breakfast.

Honey

Derived from the nectar of flowers and produced by honeybees, honey is a natural sweetener that may help suppress your cravings for sugary foods, like apple pie and cola. According to Andrea Beaman, HHC, AADP, "A teaspoon of honey here or there will satisfy your craving so you're not jonesing for a piece of chocolate cake later on." Beaman also recommends incorporating honey into your diet as a substitute for rich "diet" sweeteners like aspartame. "Artificial sweeteners actually make us fatter because they destroy our sweet palette. So when you go to eat something naturally sweet, like an apple, it doesn't even taste that sweet, and as a result you'll always crave more sugar."

Kale

"Because it's so fibrous, it'll make you feel full and you'll be inclined to eat less," says Beaman. Just a cup will give you more than 10 percent of your recommended daily fiber. Try sauteing it with some olive oil for a satisfying side dish, add to soups or put it in an omelet.

Oprah's 21-day detox avoids caffeine, sugar, alcohol, gluten and dairy and animal products, says AOL Coach Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University and author of 'What to Eat?' So what's left? Oprah's vegan diet embraces whole grains and fiber, beans and legumes, steamed or sautéed vegetables, flax crackers, peanut butter, almonds, blueberries and more.

People adopt a vegetarian or vegan diet for a variety of reasons. Most believe it is healthier, more environmentally-friendly or a boon to animal rights. But there are differences. While all vegetarians don't eat meat, some do eat fish or dairy.

Vegans distinguish themselves in a different way, says Nestle. All dairy, eggs, meat and fish are taboo. While Oprah blogs about feeling like she was baptized in "Vegan Land," and never imagined that meatless meals can be so satisfying, it's no surprise she feels so satiated. For example, one of Oprah's "mmmmmm good" dinners included asparagus cream soup, Portobello mushrooms, white beans and spinach and sweet potato chips.

Oprah -- being Oprah -- has a personal chef to keep her on the right nutritional track. But that's not essential to success. What is key is eating enough variety and getting enough of the proper nutrients, says Carol Anne Wasserman, board certified holistic food counselor and nutritionist. "You need to be careful," she warns. "You could be setting yourself up for a huge binge once the fast is over."

Instead of just being aware of what she's eating, Oprah says she is also more conscious about where her food is coming from. In fact, she references spiritual integrity in a blog post. "How can people say they're trying to spiritually evolve without thinking what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?"

"The spiritual aspect in consuming fresh food from the earth, vegetables in particular, connects you with nature," adds Stella Metsovas, a certified nutritionist and coach in Laguna Beach, CA. "It looks like she's eating about 70 to 80 percent fresh food."

Conscious eating and exercising? Check. Visualization and spiritual practice? All there. Having fun? Yes, ma'am. But will Oprah's new diet actually work? "It's a whole new way to look at her dietary intake," Metsovas explains. "She's consuming more fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants and no processed foods or animal products. It's a win-win situation."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Snowboard Basics: A Winter Sports Guide for Beginners

Snowboarding is an extreme sport that's been on the rise in popularity over the past few years. The sport's origin was inspired by combining the concepts of skateboarding, surfing and skiing. It officially became a winter sport at the Olympics in 1998. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), snowboarding first became to the United States in 1965 when Sherman Poppen bolted two skis together, and it became popular when commercial snowboards became available in the late 1970s and now snowboarding is the fastest growing winter sport in the United States.

Snowboarding for Beginners
Your legs should be in relatively good shape before you attempt this sport. A workout consisting of leg presses, lunges, calf raises and squats will isolate and build the leg muscles and hamstrings to prep you before you get on your snowboard. Plus, a snowboarder's body should be flexible in order to twist and turn without getting injuries. Stretching is key and practicing yoga is also helpful to limber up that body. Of course, walking, swimming and running will strengthen one's cardio abilities and endurance.

How Many Calories Does a Snowboarder Burn?
Approximately 10 minutes of snowboarding burns 88.9 calories for a 140-pound person. That's compared to 77.79 calories burned during a ski-machine workout.

What's My Risk of Injury in Snowboarding Versus Skiing?
Although people are susceptible to injuries in both skiing and snowboarding, knee injuries are most common with skiing as are broken bones, while snowboarding injuries are most common in the ankles, wrists and upper body, according to the AAFP. Ski helmets are commonly worn by skiers, while snowboarders shouldn't be without wrist guards in addition to helmets.

What Equipment Will I Need for Snowboarding? How Expensive Is it?
In addition to protective gear, (wrist guards for $8 and a snowboarding helmet for $50 to $60) a snowboarder should have boots (approximately $175 - $250), snowboards with bindings (approximately $300 - $400) and proper clothing such as a base layer, warm insulation, and waterproof outer layer. Plus, goggles (approximately $60 - $100) are essential on bright days to prevent snow blindness. Another option? Most snowboarding resorts offer rentals.

Are you worried that you'll get out of shape this winter? Don't be. These superfood veggies are better known as cruciferous vegetables because they fall into the Brassicaceae or Cruciferae family. Members of the cruciferous vegetable family also include other veggies like cabbage, bok choy and Brussels sprouts.

Considered super foods for your body, cruciferous vegetables contain vitamins, fiber and disease-fighting phytochemicals. A variety of components in this veggie family has been known to lower cancer risks.

According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, these vegetables have the ability to stop the growth of cancer cells or help regulate a complex system of bodily enzymes that defend against cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables are not only healthy, they're portable, too! If you're not eating enough vegetables, it's never to late to start.

You can purchase these cruciferous vegetables or other veggies ready-to-go in the frozen- or fresh-packed sections of your grocery store. In fact, they can all be added to salads, stew or soups to give you a sense of satiety, along with adding nutrients to your daily diet.

As for its effectiveness? The jury is still out. According to Fred Vagnini, M.D., medical director of the Heart, Diabetes and Weight Loss Centers of New York and author of "The Weight Loss Plan for Beating Diabetes," Meridia is not as effective as one might originally think.

According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005, participants who received sibutramine and lifestyle modification lost more weight than taking the drug alone or doing behavior modification on its own. All subjects were prescribed a 1,200 to 1,500-calorie diet and the same exercise regime.

"Studies have not shown a real dramatic long-term weight loss with Meridia," Vagnini said. "I don't think it's that effective and it affects blood pressure."

For instance, Dr. Vagnini previously prescribed sibutramine in his practice for weight loss and mentions it was "not successful" in terms of weight loss. Furthermore, as shown in studies and indicated by the drug's manufacturer, sibutramine has been known to increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients. In placebo-controlled obesity studies, 5 to 20 mg daily dosages were associated with increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

According to the drug manufacturer, side effects from taking Meridia include increased blood pressure, dry mouth, upset stomach, constipation, nausea, memory loss and dizziness.

At That's Fit, we're committed to helping you get healthy, live well and be strong through healthy lifestyle choices including healthy diets and enough exercise.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Egg Substitutes

Do you eat eggs? Or do you choose egg substitutes?

Eggs have omega-3 fatty acids in their yolks, but can often be considered a health concern. They have high cholesterol and fat content and are often linked to an increase in Type 2 diabetes. That's why many people are opting for egg substitutes -- and there are a variety of options.

Some egg substitutes are made from the egg white only. They omit the yolk and yet add vitamins and minerals including vegetable-based emulsifiers and thickeners like guar gum.

There are also ways to create your own egg substitutes. Two tablespoons of cornstarch may be equivalent to one egg as are two tablespoons of arrowroot flour or two tablespoons of potato starch. In cake recipes, one banana can be substituted for one egg.

Another idea is an egg substitute recipe, which includes one tablespoon of nonfat dry milk powder, two egg whites from large eggs and four drops of yellow food color. After you sprinkle powdered milk over egg whites, beat them until they're smooth. Add food color and beat until blended. This will create one-fourth cup, equivalent to one large egg.

That's Fit can answer all of your nutrition questions --whether they're about foods or supplements.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Best Diet Pills

Whether you have five pounds to lose or 50, your first inclination may be to pop a diet pill. And if so, what should you truly know about diet pills? First: there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. Eat healthy food and exercise more. That's the formula, plain and simple.

If you still want to reach for that fabled pill, listen up: not all pills are created equally. Even among the best diet pills, there is variation. There are calorie burners like Ephedra which was taken off the market because it was too dangerous. Then there's appetite suppressants such as Citrimax which is sold at health food stores. There are also absorption blockers which typically contain white kidney beans or soybeans to block carbohydrates from being absorbed by the intestines.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several ingredients that may help with dieting like hoodia which decreases one's appetite or diet pills containing guar gum. The issue is the result: There is no conclusive evidence to support the weight-loss claim with hoodia. Although guar gum blocks the absorption of dietary fat and increases the feeling of fullness, negative side effects may include intestinal obstruction and diarrhea.

In the end, despite the plethora of diet pills on the market -- and companies' claims that they produce the best diet pills -- nothing can be more effective than eating balanced meals and snacks, drinking water and exercising frequently.

If you want to lose weight, That's Fit has healthy and sensible Diet and Weight Loss information for you.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gmap Pedometers

Traditionally, pedometers are small recording devices that you attach to your waist -- or even your shoes -- to track the number of steps you've taken, the calories you've burned walking and the distance (in kilometers or miles) you've traveled. Now, thanks to Google, you can monitor your workout online, without wearing -- or buying -- a physical pedometer. Similar to the virtual pedometer Map My Run, with Gmap pedometers, you map out your exercise routine on a Google map.

That's right, using Gmap pedometers means you don't actually need to wear a pedometer to know how long you've walked or how many steps you've taken.

A marathon runner created the Gmap pedometer to assist with training, which might be why the tool is so easy to use. Runners, walkers or cyclists can enter their zip code and zoom into street level. Next, they can plot their workout route -- whether they want to travel in a big, looping circle or a simple out-and-back course.

Unlike other online tools, Gmap pedometer can report your distance traveled, calories burned and elevation differences.

If you find a route that you love, you can save it to use again or you can print your map and take it with you. Those who might be on long runs can leave printouts for their family members so that they know where to find them if they're not back by an appointed time.

If you're not feeling the high-tech Gmap pedometers, you can stick to the basic waist or shoe pedometer that are slipped on your waist (or shoe) and track each step. Shoe pedometers are a little more accurate than traditional pedometers and can track basketball jumps or jumping rope.

Of course Gmap pedometers are not the first online health calculators; but, if you choose to use one, the key is finding the right one you'll use regularly.

Do you want to amp up your exercise routine and monitor your progress? Studies have shown that pedometers are effective in increasing your workout productivity.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Weight Lifting

You know that you need to add weight-lifting to your workout routine but you may not be sure which routine is best.

Just like any other time you start a fitness program, you'll want to start out slowly.

First, you'll need to start with one or two sets of eight to 12 repetitions. If you're older, injured or unsure of your strength you can do 10 to 15 reps with less weight. When you can lift a weight eight to 12 times and it gets harder to lift during the last rep, you'll want to add a little weight and decrease the reps.

Even if you're a seasoned weight-lifting veteran, alternating the workouts is key. You shouldn't do arm workouts and shoulders exercises on consecutive days. You should avoid working on legs consecutively, too. It's important to vary how you're focusing on strengthening different muscles. For instance, you may want to start by isolating the shoulders. At your gym you can do an overhead press, lateral raise or front raise to work on this body part. Start with two sets of eight to 12 repetitions.

Other parts of this workout might include strengthening the chest via the bench press, chest press machine or push-ups. You can work on your back as well in a seated row machine. To build your biceps you can work on bicep curls, hammer curls and concentration curls using hand weights. As for the triceps? You can do tricep extensions.

As you alternate days to work on your lower body, you can try squats, lunges, leg-press machines, deadlifts or calf raises. As for the abdominals, there are always crunches, oblique twists and pelvic tilts.

If you begin your weight training regimen at your health club, the fym should have staff to supervise and answer specific questions.

After all, by now you've certainly heard the health benefits to the mind, body and soul but the question is, what's the 4-1-1 on beginners yoga?

Listen up, newbies. Firstly, as you begin, you'll need to figure out where to do it. Then, you'll need to know which class matches your fitness level. If your health club already offers yoga classes as part of your membership, you can test different classes there. If you scout out local classes in your neighborhood or rely on recommendations, you can expect to pay about $15 per class depending on where you live.

Although yoga instructors are not required to be certified, many are trained at yoga teaching schools. As you explore your options, it's key to find an instructor who has relevant teaching experience. In addition, if you have pre-existing medical conditions you may want to discuss yoga with your doctor before beginning. However, depending on your ailment doctors may have prescribed yoga as a holistic way to improve your health.

The beauty of yoga is you don't need to even be in shape to begin! You'll develop flexibility the more you practice.

Many new yogis begin with Hatha Yoga, during which you'll learn the basic poses at a relaxed pace. Once you've mastered that, you may want to move onto other classes like Iyengar Yoga which focuses on specific muscle alignments and holding poses for extended periods of time.

Most classes are 30 to 90 minutes long and don't require much equipment. All you really need is a yoga mat and some space to practice! Some beginners may prefer to start with an at-home workout courtesy of yoga DVDs. Although you won't have an expert giving you feedback, you may enjoy the privacy of getting used to the poses and moving at your own pace.

Not all treadmills are not created equal, though, even in the NordicTrack Treadmill family. For instance, NordicTrack sells several types of treadmills such as their Elite Series (designed with runners in mind), Reflex Series (designed with cushioning to reduce impact), the 2010 A Series (think two key words: power and durability), the T Series (latest technical features) and the Incline Series (known for burning calories and losing weight).

If you're shopping for a NordicTrack Treadmill, you're probably worried about the price. The actual price is determined by the treadmill's motor, deck and frame size. It's also determined by the workout features in its actual console. A typical walking treadmill can range from about $600 to $800. All NordicTrack treadmills have at least a 12-month warranty for parts and labor and 12 years of coverage on the motor. The frames have a warranty for the life of the product.

The straight-forward, no-nonsense exercise videos and DVD's have evolved and include more than 60 at-home workouts.

Here's the skinny: It all began a few decades ago when The FIRM studio opened its doors in South Carolina. Their experts combined cardio and weight training to create a cardio-plus-body-sculpting training fitness hybrid, which they dubbed Synergy Training. Since then, they've sold more than 10 million workout DVDs!
Intensity levels and the exercise sequences vary, making The FIRM different from other home workouts -- moving the participants between upper-body and lower-body moves. They add variable resistance for sculpting, too. For instance, the video "Tight Buns and Killer Legs" includes challenging cardio bursts plus lower-body sculpting.
After doing 10 workouts at least three times each week, the video promises results. Keep in mind each workout has a different goal. While "Core Solutions" focuses on the core and abs, "Cardio Party" is a heart-pumping fat-burning workout.

As If the videos aren't enough of a workout to get your heart pumping, The FIRM Believers Club offers more opportunities to get fit, including personal coaching from master instructors and diet and weight loss advice from The FIRM nutritionists. Additionally, you'll receive information on fat-blasting meals and recipes and can participate in an online support group via chat rooms and bulletin boards.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Prenatal Yoga: Great Classes for Expecting Mothers

It's prenatal, it's yoga, look out, it's prenatal yoga!

At first glance this is just what you think it is: Yoga classes for expecting moms typically in their second or third trimester, ranging from the novice to the advanced. What's different, however, is the class itself.

A typical prenatal yoga class will consist of poses geared towards pregnancy such as relieving back pain and restorative yoga.

In addition to connecting to other moms-to-be, you'll feel calm and relaxed while building your strength and agility. Plus, you'll learn poses and breathing techniques which can help you during childbirth. As the third trimester approaches, though, prenatal yoga may not be in the cards for you. You'll feel lethargic and you'll most need to avoid all poses that involve compressing the stomach. If you're a yogi beginner during the latter part of your pregnancy, it's recommended to speak to the instructor before you begin.
Just as yoga has become popular and immersed into mainstream by celebrities, so has prenatal yoga. Rebecca Gayheart and Kourtney Kardashian are among the prenatal yogis in Hollywood.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pilates Reformer

Ah, Pilates. The fitness system developed by trainer and gymnast Joseph Pilates focuses on controlling the core muscles to build strength and develop alignment and posture. Well, it isn't just limited to exercises done on a padded mat.

Here's the deal: the Pilates reformer is a machine used for an alternative to the typical Pilates mat workout. With the Pilates reformer, you can exercise standing up, sitting, kneeling or lying down. The contraption is essentially a sliding bed/platform with foam shoulder blocks, an adjustable headrest, straps/ropes, gear systems/break, springs/cords and a non-slip adjustable foot bar.

The reformer has a sliding platform with springs on one end that moves when you pull on the ropes or push off from the footbar. Instead of weights used in a typical Pilates workout, the springs are used for resistance. As for the swivel pulleys, since you can pull the ropes in any direction, you're able to alter the angles of resistance. Caps on the non-slip frame keep the frame in place while you're exercising and the adjustable headrest helps keep your movements smooth and elongated. On average, a brand new Pilates reformer may cost about $1,000 to $3,400.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Splenda Side Effects

Splenda, the sucralose-based artificial sweetener marketed originally in North America, has no calories, no insulin boost, and most of all, no cravings like its sugar counterpart. Sounds too good to be true, right?

Sucralose is a synthetic compound (think modified sugar by adding chlorine atoms) and the Splenda product itself is not without side effects. Allergies to sucralose result in rashes, panic attacks, headaches, intestinal cramping, diarrhea, dizziness, swelling, bladder issues, muscle aches and stomach pain. Maybe Splenda isn't so spectacular for you after all. As pointed out by Duke University researchers, it destroys good intestinal bacteria and prevents prescription drugs from being absorbed.

So, the next time you reach for Splenda or eat something that already has Splenda in it like Juicy Fruit gum, you may want to think twice.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
