Daily Fit Tip: How to buy the best olive oil

I recently got married and moved into a new house, which means I'm cooking in a new kitchen and am all inspired to start trying new recipes. In the cabinets of a healthy kitchen, one of the most common players is olive oil (love a good stir fry) but getting what you pay for is isn't as easy as it should be. Many stores have bottles of oil that have been sitting for ages on the shelf (which diminishes not only flavor but also antioxidant benefits) and some companies are even fraudulently blending in filler oils like sunflower or soybean oil. For the best, healthiest olive oil, follow these tips:
  • Go for the smallest brands -- smaller growers almost always produce higher quality oil than mass producers.
  • Keep your olive oil cool and dark, and look for brands packaged in dark bottles.
  • Read the label carefully, intentionally vague statements like "imported from Italy" can be deceiving (it wasn't necessarily made in Italy).
  • "Extra virgin" isn't necessarily the best. To be labeled extra virgin, olive oil must have an acidity of 0.8% or less, which isn't that hard to do. For really good oil, look for 0.5% or less.

And to make that news even better, it doesn't matter what kind or how much exercise in terms of getting positive work benefits all and any exercise is created equal.

Oh the good 'ol days when lunchtime was for nothing but eating, visiting with friends, and relaxing. When is the last time you did nothing but eat on your lunch break? We're a society of stressed-out, always-busy, multi-tasking maniacs most of the time, which of course sets us up for snarfing down fattening convenience foods from fast food joints and vending machines in an effort to save time. Not good. Not good at all.

Life is about more than just how much you accomplish each day and although being as productive as possible is not a bad thing, there's definitely something to be said for slowing down to smell the roses. Here's some good advice on how to make the most of your lunch break:

Get outside Depending on where you work, you're probably cooped up indoors in the same place for most of the day, so get outside and breath some fresh air to recharge your body and your mind.

Daily Fit Tip: Use flower power for better skin

It amazes me sometimes how technology is always searching to create new chemicals and compounds to help us look younger and take better care of our skin when sometimes the best products are based on the most natural things.

Have you ever considered lily extract for soothing and balancing out problem skin? I admit I haven't, or at least hadn't until I read this article over at Natural Health. Most commonly used for its fragrance, lily extract also has antioxidant and antiseptic properties that make it a natural for skin care. It moisturizes, softens, clarifies, and even minimizes pores.

Look for for "lily extract" or "tincture of lily flower" on the label.

Daily Fit Tip: Look well rested (even when you aren't)

Although getting good sleep should be at the top of everybody's daily "to do" list for good health and good looks, there are always going to be those days when you didn't get enough and you're really dragging. And as if a day like that isn't hard enough to get through, nothing makes it worse than having people telling you all day how tired you look. So the answer? Don't look tired.

Exercise! Overnight during sleep your body increases microcirculation to the skin to refresh and revive it by delivering essential nutrients. If you're shorted on sleep, though, you can help boost circulation with a quick morning workout.

Teabags Puffy eyes and dark circles happen when the body can't restore vascular tone during sleep and fluid accumulates. Putting a used, cool, green tea bag on/under each eye for a few minutes in the morning will help shrink blood vessels, drain fluid, and even fight inflammation.

Meditation
Not getting enough sleep can create stress, or make current stress worse, which in turn increases your body's production of cortisol. Cortisol is linked to skin inflammation issues like acne and eczema. Meditation, however, can help your body fall into a state of deep rest -- which in turn might help curb some cortisol production.

Workplace Fitness: Are you being bullied at work?

When you hear the words "harassment" and "workplace" together you probably automatically insert "sexual" in there somewhere, don't you? Although sexual harassment does seem to get most of the press these days (sex sells, I guess) there's an even bigger threat lurking out there: workplace harassment in the form of bullying.

Surprised? Some of you might be thinking that bullying is something that doesn't survive past the school-age years, but a whopping 37% of you have a real idea what being bullied at work means -- at least that's how many people have experienced it according to this article in The New York Times. That's more than 1/3 of us! Can that be right?

Jumpstart Your Fitness: The 5 most energizing foods

Who isn't at least a little short on energy sometimes? Besides your toddler or small dog, I'd bet nobody really.

Lack of energy on a regular basis and/or sudden energy slumps in the middle of the day are two of the biggest reasons why people skip workouts and find excuses not to exercise. It's hard to motivate yourself to do something when you're really just not in the mood.

Energy levels are affected by a lot of different things, but one of the biggest players is of course your diet. Eating right on a regular basis will go a long way towards increasing and evening out your energy levels, but there are also specific foods that you can incorporate into your day whenever you need an additional boost. And no, a Starbucks triple shot latte is not one of them (darnit!).

Daily Fit Tip: Get your "Kids in the Kitchen"

"Kids in the Kitchen" is a program geared towards teaching children to make healthy lifestyle choices and to hopefully help stall or even reverse the current obesity epidemic. Created and supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc., last year more than 255 local Leagues around country participated. Depending on where you live and the approach each individual League chooses the program may vary, but the principles behind it remains the same: teach healthy kitchen skills to kids. In my area, for example, grade school kids took part in a recipe contest and the winners spent the day baking and eating healthy goodies with a local celebrity chef. So keep your eyes and ears open for word of a "Kids in the Kitchen" event in your area, or check out their website to find out if something is happening near you.

Workplace Fitness: A shopping list of desk snacks

I'm a huge snacker. That whole "several small meals" thing is not a problem for me -- I always find time to eat! But what I don't always do is find healthy things to eat, and when I do (all-too-often) end up snacking on something too salty, too sugary, too processed, or too fattening I always end up feeling it later in the day. It's pretty predictable that within a few hours I'll be feeling lethargic and be finding it hard to focus on work, not to mention (oddly enough) I'll be craving even more junk food. It's a vicious circle in the truest sense.

Jumpstart Your Fitness: With habits to help you live longer

Finding a way to thwart death and live forever is the stuff of movies and legends -- how many characters have gone in search of the fountain of youth? That's all just fiction and fun, of course, but in real life there are real things you can do to help not only get the most years out of your life as possible but also the most quality years out of your life. A good start to a solid fitness plan is implementing healthy (i.e. life-extending) habits. So try these on for size:
  • Get enough sleep, but not too much! Studies show that people who sleep too much (generally 8+ hours per night) have shorter life expectancies, but then again so do those who don't get enough sleep (less than 6 hours). It seems there's a magical number of just enough sleep, which for most people lands somewhere between 6 and 8 hours.

Daily Fit Tip: Stop throwing food away

Posted: Apr 4th 2008 6:00AM by Rigel Gregg
Filed under: Food and Nutrition, Daily Fit Tip

Did you know that Americans throw away an average of 25% of the produce they buy? A half a pound every day. That's a lot of money going down the drain, not to mention all the wasted nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and the strain on the environment. Plus how are you supposed to motivate yourself to eat more fresh fruits and veggies when they're all smelly and sludgy in the bottom of your fridge?

The biggest reasons people toss so much produce are, thankfully, pretty easy to remedy: it happens because we're either storing it wrong or because we're buying too much at once and can't eat it fast enough. So make a better grocery list and only buy what you're going to be able to eat in the next few days, and learn how to keep it so it stays fresh as long as possible. For storage tips check out this article on Vegetarian Times -- it's chock full of awesome advice.
