ugifit.com

We often hear about how some celebrity spends two hours at the gym six days a week, or who eats exactly 1,300 calories per day in order to get into killer shape, but the truth is that many working actors are working just as many hours as we are -- and their days are just as busy.

Ugi was created with busy people (famous and anonymous alike) in mind by kinesiologist and celebrity personal trainer Sara Shears. She wanted to provide her clients a system that was portable, straightforward and integrated both diet and exercise.

Here's how the system works. For $189, you get the Ugi at Home system, which includes an Ugi ball in the weight of your choice (the website helps you determine which weight is best for you): 6 lb, 8 lb, 10 lb or 12 lb. With the Ugi ball (which is a bit soft and squishy, like a beanbag), you receive a workout guide book, a DVD showing all 150 exercises from the book, a guide to making good eating choices, access to Ugi's online library of exercises, an interval timer and a free downloadable Ugi interval timer for iPhone (with other smartphone platforms in the works).

You also have the option to purchase an Ugi ball separately ($129 for any weight) and a training poster ($25).

The workout guide is really comprehensive, offering five days of workouts -- two days of biceps, triceps and shoulders; two days of chest and back; and one day of core, glutes and thighs (although, it should be noted that every workout hits every body part; they just focus a little more on the ones listed). There are tips offered throughout the book, as well as symbols telling you which moves should be done quickly to achieve a cardio benefit and which ones have modifications available.

The Ugi ball is used in a few ways. Of course, it's used as a weight in many exercises, but also serves as a base for planks and lunges (like you'd use a BOSU) as well as a prop to move around.

The DVD is a nice bonus, but, to be honest, the instructions and pictures in the book were easy enough to follow that there was never an instance where I actually needed to use the DVD. However, if you're more motivated by working out to a DVD than to a book, by all means, pop it in. I have to say that I like the island-y beat of the music, and the DVD's 10-second countdown at the end of exercise is kind of fun!

The eating plan offers lots of healthy advice and focuses more on eating modest portions than on counting calories, which is nice, but it's a very basic start -- this is a small booklet telling you what you should eat more of (protein and vegetables) and what you should shouldn't (starchy carbs, dairy). Although it provides a sample day and the ideas it puts forth are easy to understand and follow, it is not a true meal plan with a week of menus written out for you.

Pluses: I love the way the Ugi at Home system provides a solid, guided workout, but really allows the user to be in charge of intensity and duration. If you're in a hurry, shorten the intervals to 30 seconds instead of a minute and blow through in no time. If you're not feeling so strong, split the 60-second intervals between the exercise and rest. And, unlike a DVD, you can mix these up any way you like, doing them in any order, skipping the ones that hurt your knees, or putting a couple of days back to back when you have the time and energy.

Minuses: Part of the point of the Ugi at Home system is that it's meant to be portable, and while, yes, it's easy enough to toss an Ugi ball into your trunk or backseat, it's not going to fit in luggage for traveling, and, to be honest, it's a little too big for me to ever take to the gym with me.

Takeaway: I enjoyed my Ugi workouts quite a bit (and definitely liked sitting on the Ugi ball when I was done!). Ugi at Home provides a full-body workout and has nearly-endless options for changing up the order of exercises, but the price tag might be a bit steep for many folks. One thing I'd like to point out is that Ugi does offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, so if you order a weight that's too light or find it's just not right for you, there's no harm done.

However, I'd love for them to find a way to make the weight variable so you have the option to buy a lighter weight, which might be more appropriate to start, and then add on a couple of pounds down the road.

Despite the price, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this, particularly to someone who prefers to work out at home and isn't already shelling out for a gym membership where there's access to lots of weights and props.

 Puma Faas 250

I try not to let advertising sway me when it comes to fitness gear. I really do. But when I caught the first Puma Faas commercial featuring the World's Fastest Band, I have to admit that my curiosity was piqued. And, when I saw the tight design and funky colors available, well, I knew this was a shoe I needed to check out.

As it turns out, there are currently three varieties of the Faas (which, appropriately, is the Jamaican word for "fast") -- the 250, 300 and 500. The number corresponds to the amount of cushioning and weight the shoe has, so the 250, which we tried, is incredibly lightweight (6.2 oz.) and has very little cushioning, whereas the 500 is described as a comfortable, light-weight, neutral trainer.

The technology behind the shoe, called BioRide, was many years in the making and focused on the three elements researchers deemed to be most important for top running performance -- rocker, flex and groove.

The rocker shaped outsole is designed to give runners a natural stride and spend less time on the ground, something elite runners are known for. Flex grooves respond to the foot's motion, meaning you don't waste motion or effort readjusting. And the groove running through the midsole provides extra stability, regardless of how the shoe hits the ground.

All that fancy tech sounds great, but I'm no elite runner, so I had to wonder if I would notice the difference in this super-minimalist shoe or if this would just be a really sweet-looking sneaker.

Pluses: Wow, are these light. Awesomely light. I could really tell how light they were when I hit the last mile or two of a six-mile run and found I was still able to kick my feet back with ease in my stride. Also, the material on the upper is completely breathable, allowing a lovely breeze to make its way by my feet. I don't think I realized how hot my feet get normally, but man, did I ever notice when they cooled off!

 Puma Faas 250, 300 and 500

Also, I found this to be a nice step in between a regular running shoe and a barefoot running shoe. I've tried going directly from regular sneakers to barefoot-style running shoes, and I found it challenging -- I had to build up my mileage very slowly. With these, I know my stride was slightly modified due to the lack of cushion and support, but I didn't have to stop to rub my calves down. In fact, my first run in them was over four miles with no problem.

Minuses: I don't know if I want to do serious long distances with so little cushioning, but these have become some of my favorite shoes for anything five miles and under, so I'm not sure it's quite fair to call that a minus. For someone who prefers tackling big mileage with little padding, these would probably be a great choice.

If I'm going to get super picky, I guess the shoelaces are a little too long and flop around a lot while I run. What? I'm trying to be objective; I just really liked these shoes and it's hard to find negatives.

Takeaway: I'm in love with the style and colors and crazy about how light and airy they feel on my feet. I had people stop me on the street to tell me how cool my kicks were, and all I could do was smile and say, "Yeah, and they feel great, too!" The snazzy commercials might've drawn me in, but the shoes totally lived up to my hopes. Keepers, for sure!

 Nature Made

It's overwhelming, intimidating and confusing. What is it, you ask? We're talking about the vitamin aisle. Sure, you can pop a multivitamin and call it a day, but wouldn't it be great to navigate that section of the pharmacy confidently, buying exactly what you need to meet your goals?

To clear things up, we went to pharmacist Suzy Cohen. She's been in the business for over 22 years, and her favorite part of her work is helping people understand the pros and cons of using certain medications, including vitamins. She answered a few of our vexing vitamin questions, but you can learn more about (and from) her at DearPharmacist.

That's Fit: Do certain vitamins help facilitate weight loss?

Suzy Cohen: What we eat affects our health and well-being. Unfortunately many of us frequently fall short on getting the nutrients our bodies need. Getting the nutrients we need from diet alone is difficult.

I always recommend taking a multivitamin with added minerals for extra nutrient support. Specific minerals such as iron, selenium and zinc help to facilitate weight loss by waking up and nourishing the thyroid gland.

One could also consider CoQ10, a vitamin-like compound that aids in the production of 95 percent of the body's energy, and is also a thermogenic, meaning it increases metabolism causing the body to burn fat faster. Thermogenic supplements are intended (and taken) specifically to increase your metabolism, which helps you burn fat and sugar. CoQ10 has been clinically proven in studies to help burn calories faster.

TF: What vitamins are most important for someone who is cutting calories?

SC: Once again, I would recommend a multivitamin. The reasons to take a multivitamin or mineral supplement are almost as diverse as the formulas available.

Another option when cutting calories or reducing fish consumption is to consider Omega-3 fatty acids, which are most plentiful in fish oil. The most important Omega-3 fatty acids that aid with weight loss are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Don't be fooled by the fact that EPA and DHA come from unattractive slimy fish; these two powerhouses can help you become thin and beautiful. They provide an "oil" which makes your skin hold moisture so it stays supple and smooths fine lines and wrinkles. As it pertains to weight loss, fish oils containing EPA and DHA help replace the bad fats.

People who are overweight often suffer tremendously with regularity. Fish oils improve regularity within days. As an added bonus, fish oils help improve joint pain (this has been clinically proven) and that allows a person to engage in exercise which only helps to slim the waistline!

You also need to keep your immune system strong in order to feel your best. A powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C helps maintain a healthy immune system and protects against damaging free radicals.

TF: Are there certain vitamins that are most beneficial for someone on a low-carb diet?

SC: Consistently cutting food groups from a daily diet can eventually impact nutritional status, therefore supplementing with the proper vitamins is key. Low-carb diets usually tend to limit fruits, whole grains, beans, and dairy products. In such cases, I recommend a B-complex to help insure proper metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein.

Low-carb is also another way of saying high-protein, so taking a supplement that helps break down protein, such as L-carnitine is also recommended.

Folic acid, also known as folate and folacin from dietary sources, is essential in cell division, DNA synthesis and the manufacturing of important amino acids. Folic acid is also essential for nervous system health and is vital to the development of the nervous system of a fetus. Many grains are enriched with folic acid, and for some people that is the only place they get it in their diet. But if you are cutting out grains, then supplementing with folic acid is key.

How about vegetarians or vegans?

Since animal products are a good food source of B12, I recommend a B12 supplement (or B-complex containing B12) in addition to a multivitamin.

Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the body, is found primarily in the skeleton where it builds and maintains bones and teeth. Calcium supplementation helps prevent osteoporosis and maintains a healthy blood pressure. Calcium supplements are often combined with other nutrients that offer additional benefits; I normally recommend Calcium with Vitamin D, which is often coupled with calcium to facilitate calcium absorption and bone development. Vitamin D is critical for the proper absorption and use of calcium in the body.

It is also important that vegetarians and vegans consume Omega-3 fatty acids. Rather than fish oil, one can take flaxseed oil, a natural plant-based source of Omega-3 fatty acids, although it is important to note, Omega-3s from fish oil are more readily used by the body than those found in flaxseed oil.

Vegans should consider increasing the amount of plant-based proteins they get their diet, such as beans. I also recommend using a protein supplement such as hemp or rice protein that can be used in smoothies or shakes, which can make for a delicious snack.

TF: What's the most commonly needed vitamin or supplement for those training for an endurance event or working out daily?

SC: [In addition to a multivitamin and B vitamins,] another suggestion is glucosamine, which is nature's basic building block for maintaining joint cartilage. Glucosamine helps to maintain structural integrity of the connective tissues of your joints; basically it makes the squishy material in between your joints. Not only that, but glucosamine blocks certain enzymes in the body that would otherwise destroy your precious cartilage.

Unlike reactive pain relievers, proactive joint care naturally replaces key components needed for daily maintenance, and renewal of joints. It can mean the difference between missing out and making something happen. Glucosamine offers a way for people to feel better over the course of a few months, with virtually no side effects as compared to conventional non-steroidal drug therapy. However, if you are allergic to shellfish, this is not for you.

Cohen encourages anyone confused or curious about the benefits of vitamins to closely examine their lifestyle, dietary habits and health concerns, then talk to a health care professional about supplements. She has recently partnered with Nature Made to help consumers like us make smart supplement choices, and recommends checking out this Vitamin Assessment quiz, which will tell you which vitamins and supplements best meet your needs.

Cycling can be an intimidating sport to take up. Not only is it an investment (bikes aren't cheap), but there's safety to consider, plus group riding etiquette. But it also offers many great benefits that you don't want to miss. After all, how many other sports get you outdoors, allow you to chat and be social, and still give you an amazing, calorie-burning workout?

To make newbies a little more comfortable on their bikes, we chatted with a couple of cycling experts: Matt Welch, public relations and communications director for the Austin Cycling Association, and James Thompson, bike fitter and salesman at Bike Works in Gainesville, Fla., co-founder of BikeGainesville.org, and Advocacy Director for the Gainesville Cycling Club.

Find the right bike shop.

Both Welch and Thompson suggested that you find a bike shop and develop a relationship with the people there. After all, as Welch told us, "You're going to spend a lot of time there. These people will become like part of your extended family."

How do you know if your bike shop is a good one? Welch's top criteria is customer service, meaning you should be able to walk in and be approached in minutes.

Thompson agreed, adding that you must have a good mechanic. "Never tolerate being treated poorly because you are unfamiliar with technology or technique," he said. "Always ask the mechanic to explain the ticket and costs."

A good bike shop should offer more than just bikes and equipment. Can they fit you for your bike? Do they offer ancillary support, like a starting point for group rides or someone who can offer training tips? Thompson suggested finding a teaching shop where you can also learn important skills like how to change a flat.

Decide on what type of bike you want.

Now that you've found the right shop, figure out what kind of bike you want, suggested Welch. "What fits your lifestyle? Do you see yourself as a roadie, charity bike rider, maybe training for some events like tris and road race? Do you want to mountain bike, getting off trail?"

From there, take a look at your budget. "Are you serious and competitive? Do you have staying power? If so, you'll work through a less expensive first road bike pretty quickly," Welch said. So would you rather save money by purchasing a beginner bike now and upgrading to a pricier bike later or make your first bike something that will last a long time? There's no wrong answer; remember, it's just a matter of what works for you.

Now, you need accessories!

As far as equipment for your shiny new bike, Welch told us that everyone needs a computer: "At the very least, you need something that tells you how far and how fast you've gone. And if you ride at night, you absolutely have to have lights and reflectors. In fact, it's the law in Texas."

Thompson had a slightly different recommendation, however: "Speedometers are toys. Cadence meters and heart rate monitors are real tools for improving performance and fitness. Higher cadences are more efficient and lead to fewer injuries."

Of course, both cyclists were adamant about one thing -- the helmet. In fact, Welch refuses to ride with anyone who doesn't have a helmet on. "I don't want to be inconvenienced by your stupidity," he said.

You'll also probably want a bit of riding gear, like padded shorts, and you'll need to decide on pedals -- do you want clipless (meaning you have cycling shoes that clip into them) or toe cages, which, according to Welch, most people grow out of pretty quickly.

You're ready to ride. Now what do you do?

"Get in touch with your local cycling club," said Thompson. "They can guide you toward the appropriate group ride for your level of riding and advise you on safe routes. Clubs tend to be road oriented, so if you are an off-roader, you might be better checking with local shops."

And don't be scared. It's easy to feel intimidated when walking into a bike shop, Thompson acknowledged. "Road and off-road cyclists are hive creatures," he said. "They love to ride together and meet new riders, but sometimes they can forget to engage with new people. Make sure to introduce yourself at your first ride and tell them your fitness level."

It can be even harder for women because cycling is such a male-dominated sport, so Thompson suggested getting in touch with other local women riders. And be honest -- really, truly honest -- about body pains and discomfort. "Avoid bike fitters who are uncomfortable or lack professionalism discussing women's issues," he said.

There are loads of opportunities to learn all about cycling through education courses offered at local bike shops and reputable sources online. However, as Thompson told us, be wary of cycling magazines and online reviews: "Most of the contributors are techies, geeks, weight weenies (riders who overemphasize the weight factor when discussing the value of merchandise) and industry hacks. Magazines rarely review bikes less than $2,000 and tend to refer to products as 'low end' that might well have won the Tour de France 10 years ago," he said.

You know that Bob Harper prides himself on being practical and optimistic yet tough, and that's just what he delivers in his "Ultimate Cardio Body: Extreme Weight Loss Workout" DVD.

The hour-long DVD utilizes hand weights and basic, no-nonsense moves to burn major calories and make your muscles really feel the burn. Harper is joined by four assistants on a funky, spaceship-esque set as he starts out working the lower body then moves on to the upper body using weights and body-weight exercises.

The video also includes a short Glute Challenge that can be added on or done separately, which is a nice little 10-minute bonus. But does the entire DVD deliver what it promises in the way of an extreme weight loss workout?

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate (although the instruction is great, so beginners could follow along, and by increasing your weights/intensity, advanced exercisers would find it challenging)

Next-Day Soreness
Pretty major in the quads.

Who's It For?
As always with his DVDs, his fans will love him, and the instruction makes it manageable for all levels.

Likes
Harper gives you just what you expect -- it's a challenging workout that, at times, had me begging him (out loud) to move on to the next exercise. But although he's encouraging and always pushing you to take that next step by reminding you what you're working for, he does it in such a way that I wouldn't feel bad if I had to take a breather or set down my weights.

His instruction is great, and Harper does a nice job of offering easier and more challenging modifications to make this a great workout for people of varying fitness levels, so this would be a great one to do with friends or a significant other.

Dislikes
There was nothing very groundbreaking about this workout. There were no moves that I hadn't done before. That doesn't mean they weren't difficult -- when you pile that many lunges and squats on top of each other, you're going to feel it (and oh, man, did I ever).

While it's not a dislike, per se, I don't know that I would've necessarily named this DVD "Ultimate Cardio Body," because, while my heart rate was certainly elevated, it was the strength work that really stood out to me rather than the cardio exercises.

Bottom Line
It's hard not to like My Trainer Bob -- he gets results but leaves you feeling really great about yourself. It's definitely one I would recommend!

Ross Mathews, better known as "Ross the Intern," is Jenny Craig's newest spokesperson, reports People.

The "Chelsea Lately" comic, who realized he needed to take control of his eating habits after finding that none of his shirts fit his 220-pound body, has lost 25 pounds and 13 inches since joining Jenny Craig in January -- a step that was largely prompted by his friend Sara Rue's 50-pound weight loss on the program.

Mathews told People that he was "a roly-poly kid," and "wasn't armed with the knowledge of how to eat." He just assumed that thin people were lucky, never realizing that most of them weren't consuming loads of junk food on a daily basis like he was.

While he has 15 more pounds to go before reaching his goal weight, Mathews is already feeling great about his progress -- and rightfully so. Not only did he feel confident enough to go snorkeling -- shirtless! -- in Puerta Vallerta, but the weight loss was even noticed by a certain supermodel.

"The hottest people in the world are everywhere I turn. It's been a little bit intimidating. But I saw Heidi Klum at the Elton John Oscar party," he told People. "She said, 'You look good. Have you lost weight?'"

Permalink | Email this | Comments

K-Swiss L.A. Once upon a time, Fit Beauties tended to have one, maybe two pairs of yoga pants. And they were pretty much all the same -- midweight cotton, a bit of stretch, medium rise and -- of course -- black.

However, times have changed and there are oodles of options available in the yoga pant market, meaning you can find just the right pair for you!

The Hold-You-In-and-Make-You-Stronger Pant
It's no secret that I love Lucy. Its Power Lift pant, while not inexpensive at $108, is a great do-it-all option. First and foremost, it utilizes special material to compress and lift, giving you support for better posture and creating body awareness to help you get a great workout. Plus, let's be honest -- who can't use a little help holding in the thighs? The higher rise will help those with a bit of lower belly, and the slight flare at the bottom is universally flattering.

The Brownie-Points Toning Pant
Literature on whether toning clothes and shoes actually do anything is limited at best -- and our editors weren't sold on the idea when they checked them out. But the Reebok EasyTone pant ($80) remains quite popular, and the straight cut is a nice compromise between a boot cut and a legging. My advice: Always go for the look and feel of a yoga pant over claims that it actually improves your workout. A straight leg like this will work best on athletic legs -- it could look a bit too baggy on extremely thin thighs, and because the flare at the bottom is so small, it will not balance out large thighs and could give you a bit of an ice cream cone shape.

The Comfy-Cozy Pant
Sure, we use our yoga pants for actual yoga plenty, but we also use them for Zumba, running errands, lounging and covering up itty-bitty gym shorts when it's cool outside. The Fila loose-fit pant is super affordable ($27.50) and has gotten a great review from a trusted source. This style is semiflattering on just about everyone -- it's not going to make anybody look teeny tiny, as it will drop straight down from the widest part of your leg, but it will hide a multitude of sins. Just don't pair it with a big, baggy top, or you'll look, well, big and baggy.

The Got-It-Flaunt-It Pant
Whether you've worked extra hard for a tush you could bounce a quarter off or you find fitted pants more comfortable for certain workouts (like I can't run in loose pants, I just can't), the Athleta Chaturanga yoga tight ($64) is certainly worth checking out. Plus, it comes in a variety of colors, which makes it a perfect option for layering under long tunics or short dresses when you're being casual and comfy. It probably goes without saying, but if you're looking for something flattering, well, these are going to look best on legs that would look good with nothing on them -- they are tights, after all.

The Too-Hot-to-Trot Pant
Some folks (OK, fine, me) get really hot and sweaty while exercising, making long pants less practical. In that case, a capri like the Lululemon Athletica Wonder Under Crop ($68) is a great option. The gray shade is a nice change of pace, and the four-way stretch in Lululemon's signature material means there's no asana you can do that your pants can't handle. A cropped pant is also a great way to show off super-sexy calves -- just be careful about a loose-fitting cropped pant, as that style can make even the tallest, leanest Fit Beauty look short and stumpy.

Do you have an all-time favorite brand or style of yoga pant? Be sure to share the wealth in the comments!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

"Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30" DVD Review

Jillian Michaels' fans requested more workouts in her three-two-one interval format (three minutes of strength work, two minutes of cardio, one minute on abs), and her newest DVD, "Ripped in 30," delivers just that.

The DVD consists of four 24-minute workouts of increasing intensity, with the idea that you do the first workout five or six times the first week, the second workout the second week, and so on. By the time you reach the fourth week, according to Michaels, you pretty much rule. However, she adds the caveat that no matter how hard you exercise, no matter how much you sweat, you can always (over)eat enough to negate the benefit.

And so, in addition to the familiarly formatted workouts, Michaels offers a 30-day diet plan that can be downloaded online (which, I discovered through much trial and error, cannot be found by navigating through the main site. You need to type in the exact URL that's provided briefly during Michaels' intro and on the 30-Day Meal Plan section of the DVD. You are not required to sign up for a free one-month membership to access it, even if you reach out to the site's customer service and that's what they suggest you do. Ahem.). In the meal plan, Michaels provides ideas and recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack, many of which include specific brands she recommends. It's certainly light and healthful but quite doable.

Considering the success of some of her previous DVDs, does this stand up to the challenge? Let's find out.

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate to advanced.

Next-Day Soreness
Moderate.

Who's It For?
As always with her DVDs, her fans will love her. Also, because the workouts are so short, they're a good choice for someone who's short on time.

Likes
Getting four different workouts in one DVD is a great value. Sure, they're all along the same lines, but it's a lot like going to the same step class over and over -- you're going to do some of the same moves but in different ways and in a different order. Plus, it's nice to have a week to get used to a workout then move on to something a little more difficult. True to form, Michaels works small muscle groups in conjunction with large ones to maximize your time. Michaels even rotates her assistants, which keeps things a little more interesting.

This time around, it seemed to me that Michaels gives extra focus to proper technique. She doesn't participate in the workouts all that much but really makes a point to say over and over again what good form looks like and what bad form to watch out for. And for nearly every move, she has one assistant show a modification while the other does a regular or advanced version, making even workout four appealing to a wider audience.

Dislikes
At the start, Michaels says to grab a set of weights -- one light and one heavy -- but I never heard her mention when to use which, so for the first workout, I just used one set (and, of course, I chose heavy, which I would not suggest for the entire workout. Ouch!).

And I believe I've said this before, but I don't like it when Michaels starts preaching about how we should harness this "can-do" attitude and use it in our everyday life. I definitely don't like that she does some variation of that at the end of every workout. But I'm sure it works for a lot of other people, and I can always hit the mute button.

Bottom Line
I don't know that this is actually more challenging that some of her other DVDs, like "30 Day Shred," but each workout is definitely intense, and considering you get four of them, you can't beat the value. I think the meal plan could be really helpful for people who are truly having a hard time figuring out how much they should consume each day, and many of the recipes and suggestions sound pretty tasty. It appears this is going to be one of the DVDs I keep in my library!

With so much information on nutrition and a new study coming out what feels like every other day, it's easy to get confused about what's fact, what's fiction and what's an opinion worthy of consideration. And that's exactly how Nutrition Diva came to be.

Monica Reinagel, the Nutrition Diva herself, is a popular podcast host and board-certified nutritionist (and also a trained opera singer) whose goal is to make grocery shopping and eating healthfully simple.

"Nutrition Diva's Secrets for a Healthy Diet," was released Tuesday and, despite its relatively small size, packs a ton of useful information. We chatted with Reinagel to learn a little more about how the book came to be and what she hopes readers get out of it.

That's Fit: Your book contains a bit of everything -- tips and tricks for shopping, snacking and cooking; information regarding nutritional and ethical aspects of certain foods; and more. How long did it take you to gather all of this information and put it together for the book?

Monica Reinagel: In a way, it took my entire career to gather this information and put together my thoughts on what I felt was important, so ever since I started writing about nutrition, which has been about 15 years now. But, in a more focused way, I started doing the Nutrition Diva podcast about two and a half years ago, and the direct seeds of this book were sown in that podcast. It's a weekly, short (about five-minute) chat that focuses on individual topics that people wonder about.

TF: How has your audience influenced what you included in the book?

MR: The show has been very much directed by the things that seem to be of interest and concern to the listeners. After about six or eight episodes, a large percentage of the podcasts have been directed by questions I got from listeners. That gave me a good idea of what people are stymied by when they're at the grocery store and looking at their options. That really helped me put together the guide with an eye toward the consumer.

TF: Who is your ideal reader? Who do you really want to reach with this book?

MR: Because the first half of the book deals exclusively with the choices you make at the grocery store, I think a big part of my target market is whoever is making the buying decisions for the household. That's a huge responsibility, whether it's Mom or Dad or a combination.

The second half sort of walks you through a typical day, and this is really targeting anyone who's made it a priority to eat better. I not only want to help them make healthy choices but also help them zero in on the choices that have the biggest impact. Because we have so much information available to us, I think it's sometimes hard for people to prioritize, and they can get caught up in things that might not have the biggest impact. We can't worry about everything!

TF: Were there any big surprises for you, either during your education or in doing research for the book?

MR: What consistently surprises me is the disconnect between the headlines and the actual facts. There's often a misrepresentation, or exaggeration, of the facts. We read something like, "Eating more protein enhances your metabolism." While that might be true, the magnitude of that effect might be so small that [it's] almost ridiculous to mention it. It might be significant to researchers, but a lot of that sort of information is passed along to consumers without any sense of scale. It's out of proportion, out of context.

TF: What are the two most important tips you have for grocery shoppers?

MR: The two things I think would be most helpful for people are to try to buy foods in their least processed and manipulated form as possible. This is not a unique message -- we're hearing a lot of that these days -- but it's a really good message. The fewer ingredients in the package and the closer they are to their original shape and form, the better. The other is to take health claims with a grain of salt. The manufacturers are trying to draw your attention to things they think you'll find most attractive, like that the product is fat free or low in sugar, but remember that the front of the package is an advertisement. The real information is on the back of the package, in the nutrition information and the ingredient list -- flip the package over.

TF: What are some of the most important ideas you hope people will take away from the book?

MR: In terms of nutrition, the key messages are to limit the intake of concentrated sweeteners. I don't really think the fact that there's high-fructose corn syrup is that big a deal, as opposed to cane sugar -- the problem is the quantity of sugar we're consuming. These sort of tangential arguments about the form of the sugar have missed the primary point. Also, make it a priority to eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. Those two efforts would go a huge way toward correcting what's wrong with the American diet.

It's not that that's all that matters about the diet, but both of those efforts have a number of ripple effects that go through the rest of the diet and create a number of positive changes in their wake. Put your energy into the things that will make the biggest difference in your diet.

The Jane Fonda's Workout series features updated workouts led by some of today's well-known fitness instructors, and this DVD, "Sculpt + Tone," stars Karena Dawn and Katrina Hodgson of Tone It Up.

In addition to being incredibly fit and among the most popular trainers on YouTube, the duo are friends in real life -- something that comes through in the video.

The 45-minute DVD utilizes hand weights and body weight exercises in a feel-good strength-training workout that's designed to hit every muscle group. You know I love a workout that burns a ton of calories in less an hour -- did this DVD deliver?

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate.

Next-Day Soreness
Slight.

Who's It For?
If you're looking for a really positive strength workout in an interval format, this is a good option.

Likes
Dawn and Hodgson work really well together, and they take turns demonstrating the moves while the other one explains. This allows them to push hard while exercising but also point out what you should and shouldn't be doing. Also, the interval format kept things moving along rather quickly, so it didn't feel like a long-drawn-out workout.

Dislikes
I wish they gave a bit more guidance on weights. The back of the DVD doesn't mention weights at all, although the picture does show them using weights. My workout would've really benefited from me using various sizes of weights -- for some of the long sets of flys, my 5-pound weights were great, but I could've switched to 10s or even 15s for some of the exercises. No mention of changing weights is made, so it would be easy for someone new to strength training to stick with a really light weight and not get as much out of her workout as she might with a more challenging weight.

The only other complaint I have is that I wish they had discussed form a bit more. I feel comfortable with hand weights, but I know not everyone is confident in their form, and since there are two of them, this would've been a great opportunity to teach a bit more about how exactly to do each move.

Bottom Line
The positive but somehow laid-back vibe of this video is a nice departure from some of the more intense strength-training videos out there. It almost feels like you're doing a group workout with your girlfriends. Your really pretty, super-fit girlfriends.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Win a Sleeptracker Elite Sleep-Monitoring Watch

We do a lot of inconvenient things to improve our fitness. We schedule time during our day to work out, we take icky-tasting vitamins and we choose steamed veggies over French fries (most of the time, anyway). But there's one thing we should all do that will improve our fitness and is actually a total pleasure: sleep!

The Sleeptracker Elite sleep-monitoring watch is designed to help you get a great night's sleep, every night. It detects movements attributed to light sleep stages and tracks up to 12 hours of sleep per night, which you can then upload and analyze. Using that data, you can then begin to figure out what lifestyle choices affect your sleeping patterns. Did you sleep really well the night after a morning workout with a light dinner? Did you toss and turn when you exercised at 5 p.m. and then split a pizza with your friend?

In addition to the tracking capabilities, the Sleeptracker Elite offers all the features of a normal wristwatch, including an alarm that will gently wake you with an alarm, vibration or both. And this week, you have the chance to win one!

No need to relegate this trendy hue to just home design and high fashion duds -- we've scoured some of our favorite brands to find workout gear in honeysuckle. Or, at least, in pretty pinks that come pretty darn close!

Wedding season is right around the corner, and you know what that means -- brides (and grooms) everywhere will be hitting the gym to make sure they look and feel their best on the Big Day.

"Shedding for the Wedding," premiering on the CW Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. EST, is a weight loss competition/wedding-planning show from the executive producers of "The Biggest Loser." Hosted by newly slender Sara Rue, the show features couples trying to lose weight in order to win their dream wedding. Each challenge can earn them one item, like a dress or cake.

There to help them on this weight loss journey is Jennifer Cohen, one of the show's trainers and founder of No Gym Required. To Cohen, the fact that you can't get to the gym is no excuse to not be fit, so with that mantra in mind, she's given us four exercises that will shape you up for that walk down the aisle.

One-handed tricep dips with one leg
How to: This is one of my favorites for toning and leaning out the triceps. Also, it automatically works your core because you need to balance and use your stabilizing muscle groups.

Extend your right foot out in front of you and take the opposite hand off the bench/chair, then dip slowly until your arms are parallel to ground. Try to keep your butt as close to the chair as possible. Do between 10 and 12 reps then switch sides.

Alternating arm shoulder press on ball (requires two different weights)
How to: Sit down on the ball. Press your right arm up with your heavier weight dumball for 10 reps. While doing this, extend the other arm out to the side at shoulder level while holding your lightest weight. Switch arms after every set. You should do one set of 10 on each arm, a second set of 8 and a third set of 6.

One-handed walkover push-ups (great move for your chest, core, back and shoulders)
How to: Start in a push-up position with your left hand on the ball and your right hand on the floor and do a push-up. At the top of the exercise, roll the ball and place your right hand on the ball, with your left hand on the floor, and do another push-up. Repeat 10 times.

Standing side crunch (great for your obliques, shoulders, back and core)
How to: Stand with feet a little more than hip distance apart. With a light weight (3-5 pounds) in each hand, raise your right arm up over your head then down while lifting your right knee up toward the side of your body to meet your elbow. Do 15 reps then repeat on the left side. Do three sets.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

We Tried It: Yoga Tune Up

 Yoga Tune Up

We all have our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to exercise. For me, pushing my limits to see how fast or strong I can be is a piece of cake -- I'm stubborn and competitive, and I'd much rather give it everything I've got for 30 or 45 minutes than give half an effort for 90, you know? Go hard or go home!

The downside to this, of course, is that my muscles are generally really, really tight. My flexibility is laughable, even though I do make a point to spend at least a few minutes stretching after most of my workouts. The obvious answer is to get a massage, but, well, my budget is more of the DIY variety.

Yoga Tune Up is designed for people like me -- people whose muscles desperately need the knots worked out but aren't likely to seek out a professional to do it. There is an Upper Body Therapy Ball Series and a Lower Body Therapy Ball Series, or you can get the Full Body Therapy Ball Series, which includes both Upper and Lower, which is what I tried.

The kits include two small rubber balls that you use for massage, along with audio CDs (Upper Body and Lower Body are each 45 minutes) and visual guides. The visual guides show you the different positions for the balls and how you should hold your body and move while the balls are in those positions.

The Upper Body Therapy Ball Series has three sections focusing on the upper back, shoulders and rotator cuffs, and neck and jaw. The Lower Body Series is also split into three sections, working with the lower back, hips and buttocks, and claves and feet.

Pluses: This has done a world of good for me, especially for my neck and shoulders, which tend to get especially tense. After just one session, I noticed less discomfort and increased flexibility. It's also quite simple to modify -- if you have an area that's particularly tight, you can pause the CD and stay on that spot, or if there's a muscle that's overly tender, it's easy to just use less of your body weight while rolling over the ball.

I also found the calves and feet section helpful -- I've had issues with plantar fasciitis in the past and have done some similar work with tennis balls for recent flare-ups, but there's something about these rubber balls that really seem to get in there and loosen things up.

Also, once you've used the audio guide a time or two, it's easy to just grab the balls and do a quick massage on your own to target the areas that really need it. Because, let's face it, we don't all have 45-90 minutes to spare for a massage every day!

Minuses: I had a rather hard time figuring out the placement of the balls for the lower body and hips and buttocks. I have a basic knowledge of anatomy -- pretty average, I would say -- but I found myself referring back to the visual guide over and over to make sure I was doing it right. That being said, I did not have that problem with any of the sections in the Upper Body Therapy Ball Series, so I don't know if the problem was more with my inability to picture my own lower back and booty or if the directions weren't as clear.

Takeaway: The premise is so simple but tremendously effective. And considering you can get the Full Body Therapy Ball Series, including the balls, for $44.95, I can't recommend this enough. How often do you come across something easy and affordable that's truly beneficial to your health?
