Cheesy Workout Video Round-up

Fitness

Cheesy workout videos abound on the Internet. Aerobics instructors and jazzercise devotees back in the 80s had no idea how much joy their perfectly feathered hair, matching leotards and corny commentary would bring to us in the future! At That's Fit, we're rounding up a few of our favorite funny fitness videos. Some are the real deal, while others are purposely playful, but no matter what, they're sure to bring a smile to your face. If you have a favorite, be sure to share!

This week, our focus is on some amazing aerobics competitions. Seriously, where can we buy tickets?

San Francisco Bay Club on The Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship

The 1987 Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship
This video hits all the marks of a cheesy workout video. Awesome costumes? Check. Overly-enthusiastic attitude? Check. Hysterical (but perfectly performed) choreography? Oh, honey, you know it. As an added bonus, there are even leg warmers. Also, who knew doing "The Robot" counted as exercise?

3rd Kamikaze Czech Aerobic Open

Czech Aerobic Open 2008
Great aerobic videos don't have to go retro -- this is from just last year, and proves that the aerobics is alive and well in other parts of the world. We're just hoping our step instructor doesn't get any ideas.

1995 Aerobic Competition

Mixed Pairs Aerobic Competition, 1995
This gem features a male/female pair doing some impressive (and, according to the commentators, "innovative") maneuvers. In fact, once you get past the matching outfits (is that a tiger print?) and slouch socks, listening to the commentators is almost as much fun as watching the clip!

Kim Kardashian's Sexy Salad Commercial

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Kim Kardashian and her famous curves star in a new ad campaign for Carl's Jr. The reality star is promoting the fast food chain's salads, which she told People magazine "are healthy," which, she said, "fits what I'm about right now."

Well, we hate to break it to you, but that's only partially accurate. For starters, the reality TV star said she used diet pills to lose weight and even promotes Quick Trim. As for the salads, the Charbroiled Chicken Salad is not a terrible choice, weighing in with 250 calories, 9 g fat, 75 mg cholesterol and 590 mg sodium (before adding dressing), and the Side Salad barely counts with just 50 calories and 2.5 g fat. However, there's another option that's much, much worse: The Green Burrito Taco Salad.

Click on the video below to get a sneak peak of Kim Kardashian's sultry Carl's Jr. commercial. Story continues below the video.

This salad contains a whopping 970 calories, 58 g fat (19 of those being saturated), 75 mg cholesterol and 1850 mg sodium. And yes, most people probably know that, by its very nature, a taco salad is never the healthiest salad option. However, when Kim said, "The salads are healthy," you'd think there would be more than one diet-friendly meal option (one and a half, if you count the little side salad as a meal).

Dance and Be Fit: Lower Body Burn

Nobody can argue that dancers tend to have enviably long, toned legs. So, it makes sense that a dance-based fitness video would be designed to give you "strong, lean dancer legs," which is just what "Dance and Be Fit: Lower Body Burn with Kimberly Miguel Mullen" promises.

The video is 50 minutes long and divided into four segments -- a warm-up, cool down, and two 20-minute sculpting workouts.

Kate Moss' 'Skinny' Statement is Food for Thought

Celebs & Entertainment

Kate Moss recently told WWD that her motto is, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," (and then went on to say that, of course, that's impossible to follow).

Now, as someone who's interested in fashion, I think Moss is fascinating. However, as a woman who feels very strongly that women need healthy role models to look up to, I have issues with her waif look, so this statement got me fairly fired up. Whether you're aspiring to lose weight or not, it's important that you enjoy foods in a healthful way, and Moss' statement is far from showing a healthy attitude toward food.

But then, I got to thinking about her real meaning behind this. I mean, yes, Kate Moss is skinny. But her statement actually brings up a good question that applies to all of us -- are there any foods out there that you're willing to put on a little weight for?

Fitness Fashion: Skirts With Legs

Fit Beauty
Running skirts are rising in popularity faster than teenagers' hemlines, and for good reason. They're comfortable, flattering and, generally speaking, quite functional with handy pockets.

There's just one problem -- once winter rolls around, bare legs aren't exactly ideal. Even if you're heading to an indoor workout, the few minutes it takes you to go from the car to the gym in the freezing temperatures can do a number on your muscles. But what if your skirt -- your favorite, comfy running skirt -- had legs?

SkirtSports offer just that in their ToughGirl Skirt ($90), and it comes in a variety of colors -- the "Hot Legs" version even has a fun print on the leg. You get all the benefits of yoga pants or leggings, but there's nothing skin-tight to your bum. Now, that's a design I can get behind! As far as functionality goes, the ToughGirl Skirt has two hidden pockets as well as a SonicMusic Port for your headphones.

Eat Better With These Kitchen Gadgets

Nutrition & Supplements

You inspect the labels of the food you buy, and you fill your cart with fresh, tasty produce and whole grains. But how will you prepare it all?

Sometimes, cooking a healthful meal can be intimidating -- we've all experienced this. It's a heck of a lot easier when you have the right gadgets!

This week, FitSugar is sharing several tools that make healthy eating easier than ever. For example, an indoor grill or herb pot makes it easier to prepare your favorite meal with less fat and sodium (but with all the flavor). A nutritious meal filled with veggies is a little more exciting when your vegetables are sliced and diced in new and different shapes with a fancy dicing machine. And, it's certainly easier to slow down while you're eating if you're using utensils that don't allow you to shovel the food into your mouth!

Yo-Yo Dieting: Like a Drug (Really)

Diet & Weight Loss

Have you ever gone on a diet and felt like you were going through withdrawal from lack of chocolate and sweets? A new study by Boston University has found that you're not too far off base, reports ScienceNOW.

In fact, there are a few parallels between yo-yo dieters and drug addicts, says co-author of the study and Boston University neuroscientist Pietro Cottone. It's not just the good feeling you get when you eat, say, chocolate cake, that makes you go back for more. The study found that dieters also seek out those foods to avoid the negative feelings they experience when they don't have those foods, similar to an addict trying to avoid withdrawal, he explains.

Researchers in the study gave rats cycles of normal and then chocolate-flavored rat chow, and saw some surprising results. Rats in the control group (all regular food) ate about the same amount every day, while rats who occasionally got chocolate food began to eat far more when they got the chocolate-flavored food, but less when presented with regular food. Additionally, according to ScienceNOW, the chocolate-fed rats exhibited signs of anxiety when the chocolate-flavored food was taken away. (Um, how many of us can relate to that?)

Stressed Women Eat High-Calorie Comfort Food, Study Finds

Diet & Weight Loss

Are you a woman who reaches for fatty foods when stress sets in? If so, you're not alone. A recent study by the University of California-San Francisco found that women experiencing chronic stress ditch their diets and load up on comfort foods, reports Shine.

The study, which surveyed 600 women, found that most women not only opt for foods that might normally be off-limits, but they also beat themselves up about it. And, as the author of the Shine article pointed out, that's hardly surprising -- most of my girlfriends follow that same pattern.

This isn't the first study to look at the relationship between stressed out women and comfort food. A study from Cornell a few years back had similar findings, including the fact that these foods triggered feelings of guilt in many women. It also found that men and women seek out different kinds of comfort food, with men preferring protein-dense treats, like steak or meatloaf, while women jones for sweet, high calorie snacks (chocolate and a pint of ice cream, ladies?).

Don't be afraid of the number on the scale -- In fact, consider sharing it. ...
