A new fitness gizmo or different diet fad pops up almost daily in our appearance-obsessed culture. However, there are also larger trends that sweep across the U.S. -- and often the world -- for good reason. As the article editor for AOL's That's Fit, I see everything from dangerous diets to revolutionary workout styles, and there has been a continuing shift to make exercise accessible and fun for people of all ages and sizes. Here are AOL Health's top 10 fitness trends for 2010.

Yoga Fusion Classes
If you're doing yoga one day and cardio the next, you haven't checked out some of the latest classes to hit gyms across the country. Whether it's Core Fusion yoga, which is based on the fundamentals of Pilates and the Lotte Berk method or yoga spinning, there are various classes that blend traditional cardio and strength workouts with yoga for increased flexibility. If you thought yoga wasn't for you, you might want to take another look.

Exercise Wear for All Sizes
With "The Biggest Loser" in its 10th season, it was only a matter of time before exercise wear for all sizes spread to the masses. While there have always been plus sizes, it has been difficult for many to find flattering, fun workout clothes. Not anymore. From "Biggest Loser"-themed merchandise to Enell sports bras, fitness gear for all sizes has gone mainstream and is now featured at chain stores such as Land's End and Old Navy.

Reality TV Weight Loss Overload
That being said, "The Biggest Loser" is starting to feel a little stale. While viewers still love the emotional and physical makeovers, many fans are dismayed by Jillian Michaels' product endorsements. And the boredom and disgust is obvious: The show saw some of its lowest ratings since its debut in 2004. But even with a shrinking audience, there is no sign of the show stopping anytime soon.

Kim Clijsters returned to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center yesterday to defend her title at the US Open. After stepping away from tennis in 2007, Clijsters returned last year with her new daughter, Jada, in tow.

Clijsters told That's Fit that during tournaments like the US Open, she typically practices an hour or two a day and then hits the gym to follow a basic workout schedule. But during the off-season, her workout schedule can vary from four to six hours a day in the gym.

She admits that training after pregnancy was frustrating at times. "I started from zero," she said. "In the past, I would really focus on just the weak parts of my body, but this time I had to train everything again."

Now that the 27-year-old Belgian tennis star is also a mom, she said that her busy training schedule comes with trade-offs. "I have help from our nanny, my husband and other family members," she said. "But, of course, I have days when I feel guilty about being away from [Jada]."

Off the court, sports are a family affair. She met her American husband, Brian Lynch, while he was playing professional basketball in Europe. To relieve stress, they go mountain biking during the off-season and take their dogs for long walks. Clijsters said she also loves yoga and swimming to relax.

Sports are in Clijsters' blood: Her father was a soccer star, and her mother was a professional gymnast. But Clijsters said while sports, in general, were always a priority, tennis was always her first love.

"Sports have always been important in my life. I feel better when I work out, and it has become a way to relax, get rid of stress and makes me feel good about myself," she said. "So even if I'm not practicing tennis, I will always find a sport where I can challenge myself."

As for Jada, there is no pressure to choose professional sports, but rather to embrace an active lifestyle. "She can choose whatever sport she would like," said Clijsters, "but we will teach her that playing sports and healthy eating is a good way of life."

Although Clijsters has extra support as a professional athlete, her love of activity and healthy living -- and making it something the entire family is involved in -- is a lesson all of us can learn from.

Despite its dark color and full flavor, Guinness clocks in at far less calories than most average beers. In fact, at 125 calories for a 12-ounce glass, it has about 25 fewer calories than most ales or lagers. Budweiser by comparison has about 145 calories. Depending on who you ask, it's also far more satisfying than many of the ultra low-calorie beers that have flooded the market in recent years.

The good news doesn't stop there. Guinness also contains small quantities of iron, calcium, phosphates, some vitamins (including vitamin B) and fiber, according to Guinness Master Brewer, Fergal Murray.

Despite Guinness' old ad campaigns touting that the beer is "Good for You," the popular stout is quick to shy away from health claims. But we've all heard them. Supposedly, Guinness was recommended for everyone from pregnant women and the sickly to racehorses. While attending an Irish-Catholic college for my undergraduate degree, I was told one could live off of Guinness if you took a vitamin C supplement.

A study from Wisconsin also found that Guinness has antioxidants, and could even protect the heart.

But I digress. No one should live off of liquor, even if it has trace vitamins and minerals. While certainly alcohol can be a part of any diet in moderation, at the end of the day it is essentially empty calories.

Let's remember, the occasional beer or glass of wine is not to blame for the sky-high obesity rates. So go ahead and tip back a pint of Guinness in honor of its homeland. Oh, and if you decide to walk it off, it takes about 35 minutes for a 140-pound woman to burn those calories.

Then I remember it's a video game. "Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2010" for Nintendo Wii is sure to make you crave a digitally-perfected body, but it also offers the moves to help you sculpt a pretty solid real-world figure.

In true Michaels form, she's not going to let you off easy. The pre-programmed workouts will definitely get you sweating and your muscles burning. If you don't like the pre-set offerings, you can set up your own routine or pick any of the locations on the fictional island and take potluck on one of the moves.

This video is more about basic strength training than cardio, although similar to "30 Day Shred," Michaels incorporates cardio intervals, such as jumping jacks, to keep your heart rate up in between calisthenics.

Fans of "The Biggest Loser" trainer will recognize many of her moves, from side planks to sledgehammers. There is little that's new in the way of exercises, but they feel fresh in a video game setting and players can set resolutions and follow along on a calendar to keep on track of their progress.

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate.

Next Day Soreness
Minimal.

Who's It For?
The moves are not very complicated, but there is barely any cueing, therefore the game is not ideal for true beginners. There is an instruction booklet that gives some direction on how to do the exercises, but Michaels is surprisingly silent during the actual routines except to give basic feedback.

Likes
I like that Michaels doesn't loose her edge just on Wii. If you stop in the middle of a set she will tell you, "don't waste my time." That tough love attitude keeps you going, as does the variation of settings in the game. You can change the music, and even Michaels outfit, to suit your mood. Unlike Wii Fit Plus, the downtime in between sets is relatively short, and so you can keep your heart rate up and get in a decent workout. The pre-programmed circuits are well balanced, although it is a lot of fun to build your own.

Dislikes
For someone so vocal, there is a lot of silence during the actual exercises. While it's nice to listen to the waves crashing on the beach behind her and the rock music in the background, there could be much more cueing and checks on form. For those that already have great form on moves like a side plank or bicycle crunch, there are no advanced variations.

Working with the Wii remote is also challenging on a few moves. Even while following the directions, I never seem to hit the mark while doing oblique crunches, despite my careful form. As I started to worry about the Wii remote, my form suffered. Most exercises are well calibrated to the remote, but for some, playing the game may interfere with concentrating on getting the most out of every rep.

Bottom Line
If you're a fan of Michaels or an intermediate exerciser looking for a fun game to throw into the mix, Fitness Ultimatum 2010 is for you. While the moves are not novel, there is a reason that many of them are used by the best trainers in the world year after year: They work.

While I definitely don't resemble Shaun White when I'm strapped into my actual snowboard, I figured I could make some headway towards my dreams with Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage.

This game, UbiSoft's second installment with Shaun White for the Wii, can be played with just the Wii controller or the balance board and controller. Since I'm looking for games that offer a potential workout, I used both. With my game face on and my balance board ready to go, I stepped on to see if I could master the virtual big air competition or boardercross and maybe even burn some calories. It didn't go so well on either account.

As a snowboarder, I tried to use the motion of switching between being on my heels and toes, although that just lead to my first rider, Francois, going all over the place. The movements in the game need to be much more subtle, and unlike real snowboarding, there is no real jumping on the Wii Balance Board (in fact the game pauses and reminds you not to jump if you do).

So plyometrics don't come into play, but balance certainly does. I didn't have to engage my core nearly as much as I would on a real mountain, but it helps if you want to master various tricks, including ones that involve balancing between being on your toes on one foot and your heel on the other foot.

Unlike some other Wii Fit games, you are not playing with your own Wii character. Instead there's a group of boarders who are climbing their way up the world tour, chasing White, of course. To start, you're ranked 100 and only have a few riders to choose from. White is no where to be found, he's probably off riding his Red Bull halfpipe until the finals come up. You, on the other hand, are just trying to land a truck driver or figure out a front side rodeo to garner enough points to move up in the rankings (Full disclosure, I am currently ranked only 74.)

A 150-pound person will burn about 100 calories an hour doing a light activity while standing, and only about half that amount sitting. Recreational snowboarding, however, can burn up to about 600 calories per hour. If you take World Stage very seriously, perfecting your moves and engaging your core to shoot up through the rankings, you might burn some extra calories, but mastering tricks is more gameplay than hardcore workout.

Level of Difficulty
Beginner/Intermediate

Next Day Soreness
None.

Who's It For?
Anyone who is a fan of Shaun White, or snowboarding in general, can have a lot of fun on this game. While doing tricks on the board isn't exactly as intensive as single leg squats, it takes a fair bit of balance and some technique to master any of the tricks that will help you catch up to White.

Likes
The range of locations and different competitions keeps the game fresh as you continue to advance. If you use the Wii Motion Plus controller, you can also build your own moves. Face planting is also much less brutal when simulated on a video game instead of on a real ski mountain.

Dislikes
It would be nice to actually jump on the balance board to make it even more interactive, although obviously I can see how that could lead to a lot of broken boards.

Bottom Line
Chasing Shaun White in World Stage is definitely easier than trying to match his talent on the real world's stage. The game can be addicting and fun, although it's not much of a workout. However if you've been playing the game with a controller, it's a whole new challenge to try it on the balance board.

Here at That's Fit, we are no stranger to at-home workouts. One of the most exciting ways to break a sweat in your living room in recent years is the Nintendo Wii Fit. As games continue to hit the market, we will review all things Wii Fit.

After working on my Wii bowling game and fine tuning my Wii golf game, 2010 seemed like the right time to try out the plethora of Wii Fit games, which are as much about getting you in shape as they are about having fun. After about 30 minutes, I synced the balance board and I was finally ready to go with Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus (reading the directions carefully would have saved some time). A small Wii balance board on the screen talked me through the program in a high-pitched voice. I stepped on the white platform to have my body mass index and balance measured. My BMI was normal, which I knew, but my balance was just a little bit off -- to the left to be exact. That came as a surprise, but as a competent snowboarder and regular exerciser, I wasn't too concerned.

Then I did a series of balance tests that determine my "Wii Age." Despite being just under 30 in real life, my Wii character was 36! While doctors often refer to your biological age as determined by lifestyle habits, including diet, smoking and cardiovascular health, on the Wii, it all comes down to balance. Balance is especially important as we all age, especially to prevent falls. However, for those of us without an AARP membership, I was curious to see how the Wii Fit would help my overall fitness, not just my balance.

A friendly trainer walked me slowly through the different strength, yoga and aerobics moves (you can pick a male or female trainer). A little too slowly. In between moves, he told me to "keep working at it every day," or "good job, you'll get stronger the more you work out." The downtime my little red-lipped avatar had to endure in between exercises meant my heart rate never really climbed. (The red lips seemed to work for bowling, but I have to admit she looks a little gussied-up in yoga pants.)

That's not to say that Wii Fit Plus isn't a lot of fun. Hula hooping in a setting that was definitely inspired by the "Sonny & Cher" show made me downright giddy, even if I didn't break a sweat. My skateboarding skills are lacking, but I'm sticking with it until I get better. Ditto on juggling.

The different moves, or circuits, are great for beginners or people who are looking to improve their strength and balance. A 2009 study from the University of Queensland in Australia found that women age 30 to 60 increased their balance and leg strength after using the Wii Fit twice a week for 10 weeks. They didn't, however, see a change in their weight, cardio endurance or mobility. Kids will love some of the more active games, such as hula hooping, but for adults and children alike, it shouldn't replace regular sports and exercise. It's a great replacement to just vegging out in front of the TV as a family though.

Likes
I'm much better at hula hooping on Wii Fit Plus than I am in real life! The interactivity allows you to see the small wobbles in your balance as you perform exercises, such as a single leg extension. The immediate feedback is inspiring to do the exercises again and agani until you see improvement.

Dislikes
Even if you program an entire circuit and you've done the exercises before, there's a lot of coaching and downtime in between the moves, so your blood never really gets pumping. I would have also liked some more compound movements to get a little more bang for your buck if you're only going to spend 20 or 30 minutes exercising.

Bottom Line
If you like to work out at home and you're looking for something a little more interactive (for yourself or the kids), Wii Fit Plus is great. You can track your progress and set goals. However, for more advanced exercisers, there isn't much that's new, although the aerobics games sure are fun.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Funniest Workout Videos

	5. Carmen Electra's The Lap Dance

This workout promises to "tighten and tone while you're turning someone on." To keep things serious, each move is practiced without music first as Carmen Electra shoots long, sultry stares into the camera as she walks you through the steps of the perfect lap dance. No surprise, the lap dance portion does not even come close to a sweat session, but hey, you'll get good at arching your back and counting to eight.

	4. Teen Steam: The Alyssa Milano Workout Video

Warning: Googling the phrase "teen steam" leads to some very unsavory websites. But back in 1988, it was all a little bit more innocent when "Who's the Boss?" star Alyssa Milano hung out in her bedroom in a sports bra and got fit with some girlfriends. From the cheesy introduction, where she vows to "work out" her friends' problems (D on a report card, forced to babysit a brother on a Saturday night), to her going over good form as her buddies awkwardly do leg lifts, this hits a lot of high notes. The more you watch it, the more you wonder whether this is for giggly teenage girls or creepy old men.

	3. Richard Simmons: Sweatin' to the Oldies

Surely no one on this planet has both shed tears and giggled over the subject of exercise as much as Richard Simmons. You don't need a sexy leotard, go ahead and work out in your jeans. You can be fat, uncoordinated and fashion-challenged. You just have to move and have fun. Simmons' "Sweatin' to the Oldies" series endures because, well, look at those tiny shorts! Oh, and because he danced countless people to better health.

	2. E-i-E-i- Yoga For Kids

I'm sure Yogi Oki Doki doesn't mean to be so creepy, but he is. On his own Oki Doki would be hilariously awkward, but throw in his pal Rasta Rooster and the rest of the gang, and it just moves into another realm of ridiculous. Forget about Mommy & Me yoga classes, this "yoga in a barn" leaves mom at home and serves up a weird looking guy in tight jeans helping lithe young ones with their yoga poses. Like a car wreck, you can't look away.

	1. The Marky Mark Workout

Marky Mark doesn't try to go it alone in this one, he has his cousin and some "fly honeys" to help him throughout the low-budget video. In this awesomely bad workout, Marky Mark teaches you step-by-step how to get a Calvin Klein underwear model body, and hit on the ladies while doing it. Long before he grew up, dropped his nickname, and became an actor and producer, Mark Walhberg is unknowingly hilarious, and sometimes inappropriate, while giving you muscle-building moves. Pow!

Zsa Zsa Gabor's It's Simple, Darling

Move over Kim Kardashian, you've got nothing on the original. In her 1993 workout video "It's Simple, Darling," socialite and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor dons a skin tight, shiny black get-up next to two beefcakes. Her goal is to keep you looking great for your "unfaithful husband, lover, lawyer, doctor..." She is not specific about form, and does not claim to be a trainer. Instead, she lets viewers know while stretching that "I wasn't born to be an athlete, I was born to be a lover." So true, there's nothing athletic about this video.

9. Mousercise

Come on everybody and Mousercise! If you were one of the lucky kids to have the Disney Channel in the mid '80s, you might remember Mousercise. Before the childhood obesity rate skyrocketed, this show encouraged kids to get a regular workout, complete with upper body, lower body and stretching. The moves are a little jerky, the outfits are pure '80s, and Mickey is nowhere to be seen when the going gets tough, but the intro alone makes it a classic.

8. The Goddess Workout

Dolphina supposedly began belly dancing at the age of four. Wait, it gets better: She claims dolphins rescued her after a near-fatal boat crash, giving the "belly dancer to the stars" her stage name. While she has a belly dancing video, it is her Cardio Burlesque Striptease Workout that makes you pause. No Lycra here, just bra and panties and a long white boa. In a seductive voice, she encourages you to not just whip the boa around, but "do it like you're having a tantrum." She tosses in that it's a great workout for the arm, though with no reps and no weight, it's highly doubtful. But that's OK, because if you master this move, even if you're still flabby, she promises, "you're sure to get your way." Oh my!

7. Buns of Steel

Do not be fooled by the headbands and poorly timed music, this is a serious glute workout. Good cues, careful movements, and hilarious asides put The Original Buns of Steel among the best in the genre. If it's not enough to follow along through this nearly hour-long, butt-burning workout, try to do it without laughing. But if you can stick with it, instructor Greg Smithey lets you know that "they're gonna see you coming, and notice you going."

6. Jack LaLanne's Facial Exercises

The godfather of exercise gurus, Jack LaLanne, inspired an entire generation to embrace exercise with "The Jack LaLanne Show," which started in 1951 and stayed on the air for a record 34 years. His commitment to fitness, however, went far beyond push-ups and included series of facial exercises. The reason for your wrinkles? It's not the stress you've endured and smoking a pack and a half a day, it's because you're not exercising your facial muscles! Even bodybuilding legend LaLanne takes a wrong turn here, and looks ridiculous doing it.

More than 40,000 people will run the ING New York City Marathon this Sunday. Among them will be working mothers chosen to represent all five of New York City's boroughs in the 2009 Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge Team. The women, some running the marathon for the first time, all have unique stories, but share the bonds of being fit, working mothers balancing all the demands that come with those roles. The team of five was also joined recently by another woman, Beth Segaloff, who recently lost her fiancé, Captain Ben Sklarver, just three weeks ago when he was deployed in Afghanistan. The women will run together for the first 13 miles, and then anyone can break away for the second half. The woman with the best time will win a trophy, and bragging rights. But none of these women are part of this team to brag. Instead, they find peace, motivation and solace in their commitment to running. That's Fit recently met the team, along with mom and marathon Olympian, Magdalena Lewy Boulet, to find out how, and why, they have made running such a critical part of their lives.
Continue reading New York City Moms Balance Work, Kids and Marathon

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ugly Betty's Ana Ortiz Talks Fitness, Pizza and Dropping Baby Weight

Less than three months after giving birth to her first child, Ana Ortiz hosted the FITNESS Mind Body Spirit Games in New York's Central Park. That's Fit caught up with the actress who plays Betty's sister Hilda to find out what she does to fit into some of her outrageous outfits on the show, and how she's looking so good just after having her daughter, Paloma. Despite the success of "Ugly Betty," this New York native is completely grounded, from being honest about shoring up her diet as she gets older, to admitting she doesn't like to pay a lot to get a good workout.

That's Fit: You recently had a baby, what have you done to get back into shape?

Ana Ortiz: They do say breastfeeding is nature's lipo. I attribute it to working out while I was pregnant. I particularly attribute it to this place in New York, Le Maison, where you're using your own body weight and rubber bands. Also, I'm in New York, so I'm walking everywhere.

Let's be honest, it wasn't a clear enough foot fault for the line judge to make that call at such a crucial point in the match. But Serena's reaction was unacceptable. I was courtside after waiting at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center through nearly eight hours of rain to see the women play out their semifinals. The match was tight, although Serena had already beat herself long before she started swearing. She smashed her racquet at the end of the first set in understandable frustration, she was getting outplayed, fair and square. Clijsters had the pressure on, she was playing a cleaner match. It happens to anyone who plays a sport -- some days you don't play your best and your opponent is better.

Many of us can relate on some level to Serena's reaction, but on a stage of that caliber, with so many watching, athletes are setting the tone for much more than their own match. Kids, in particular, emulate what they see their favorite athletes do (which Serena acknowledges in an apology on her website). There is a time in competition, especially individual sports, that it is less about training and fitness, and more about focus and attitude. When the latter fails you, all the hours in the gym can't save you.

Fast-forward to the second foot fault of the match, the call that's been heard around the world. The stadium immediately buzzed, "Was that a foot fault?!" Those listening on US Open radio earpieces heard John McEnroe confirm our questions, it was not a clear foot fault, and it might not have been a fault at all. For those who don't watch tennis outside of the slam finals, let me tell you, foot faults are rarely called, but they have been rife at this year's US Open.

Perhaps Serena should have taken a half step back when serving, since she knew she was prone to getting called for foot faults in the tournament. Instead of putting her focus into holding her serve and taking a step back, she came unhinged. She got a really bad call at a bad time, not the first time it has happened to her in a tournament. But for all the people who look up to her and her game, her reaction was disgusting. Who knew an entire stadium could get uncomfortable? Well, it did.

Sure, she's not the first person to go nuts on the tennis court. In fact, the Daily Mail has a nice roundup of tennis tirades. However, Serena made it very personal, and you could clearly read her lips from behind the changeover chairs (where I was sitting). It wasn't pretty. At first I was excited to see her meltdown, but about five seconds into it was just confusing and absolutely out of line. I've seen a lot of tennis, I've never seen a player booed the way Serena was. Those around me who had cheered for her the loudest also booed the loudest.

Most of us will never be on center court and know what that pressure is like, but that's not the point. Fitness is not just about lifting weights and solo runs, for many of us, it's also about playing sports. Sportsmanship should be an inherent part of professional and amateur sports alike, and anyone on the pro level who cannot conduct themselves should be punished.

Serena said in a following statement that it was her "passion" that was responsible for her reaction. But from the sidelines, it seemed as though she already had felt defeated in the match, even though she could have served her way out of two break points. She came unglued. The linesperson should be questioned and potentially fired for making a dubious call, which could not be challenged, at such a juncture in the match. But just like hitters and pitchers adjust their game depending on the strike zone on any given night, Serena should have adjusted her positioning knowing that she was being called for foot faults.

Sports is about making the small adjustments in the heat of competition to beat your opponent, and make sure you're not beating yourself. The call was terrible, but it was not the foot fault that ended the match. Serena made that call by herself.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Biggest Loser Video Game Preview

"The Biggest Loser" kicks off just one week from today. The focus of Season 8 is second chances, including a former Season 7 contestant Daniel, who was the show's heaviest contestant ever at 454 pounds. But second chances aren't just for the contestants. To help fans follow along in their own weight loss journeys, The Biggest Loser Interactive game for Nintendo DSi, DS and Wii hits stores on October 6.

The game features Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels to push you through routines to help you reach your goals, just like on the show. It also offers nutrition tips and challenges. The programs have a range of exercises, from yoga and cardio to full-body circuits to tone your body. "We wanted to give people another tool," Bob says. "You're going to have recipes from the book, you can track your progress, you can put in your calorie intake so when you lost the weight you can go back and see what worked."

There are four, eight and 12-week programs. Once you enter your current weight, you can enter your goals. But unlike the show, which has raised eyebrows for its extreme weight loss that is unsustainable for many people in the real world, the game will actually limit the amount of weight you can lose in a given program. If you're looking to lose 50 pounds in four weeks, the game will set more realistic goals for the first four weeks and then you can enter new goals for the next session.

And what about the workout? At a recent preview of the game, many former Biggest Loser contestants and Bob were on hand to break a sweat with a Wii controller. And everyone did sweat. As you go through the exercises, Bob or Jillian coax you along just as they do on the show. "It's actually their voice and their personality," says Nicole from Season 7. "When you see the avatar you're like 'oh it kind of looks like Bob,' but then you hear him -- and it's totally him."

Biggest Loser Video Game Preview

Tara, Damien and Nicole from Season 7, along with Jim from Season 4, were on hand with Bob to show off their slimmer bodies and break a sweat with the new Biggest Loser video game for Wii and Nintendo DS and DSi.
    Katherine Tweed
The game is broken up into lower-body, upper-body and full-body workouts, which you can choose, or a program will be set up for you based on your goals. Tara offered her tips for me (left) and Kelly Zyskowski from Seventeen magazine as we went through a 30-minute routine.
    Katherine Tweed
The key to the workout is to mimic the trainer on screen -- not going slower or faster -- to maintain proper form. Bob and Jillian are just as encouraging (and tough!) in the game as they are in real life, according to Nicole from Season 7.
    Katherine Tweed
Floor exercises oddly require you to put your Wii controller in your pocket, although many workout clothes don't have pockets. But we discovered it's just as easy to put it in your waistband so the controller can still register your movements.
    Katherine Tweed
Two players, including one who is a member of the Biggest Loser Club, went head to head in a challenge. Like the real game, the challenges eliminate players one by one until there is only one winner left.
    Katherine Tweed
Bob came by to cheer on Kelly and I as we go head to head in a challenge that involves doing a "mountain climb" move followed by "ax chops." After a 30-minute full-body routine and two challenges, we both got a (surprisingly) good workout. Even though Bob wasn't standing behind us the entire workout, he was with us on the screen and it kept us moving -- and sweating.

After a technical snafu in round one challenge, where Nicole thought she was winning but the controllers were switched around, the newlyweds went for a rematch. "I don't know anything about video games," Nicole admitted. "It was Atari when I was young."

Nicole wins this round definitively with good form on her "ax chops." Damien, however, claims his controller must be broken and they have a rematch to settle the rematch.

Although fall doesn't officially start for a few more weeks, summer is essentially over. For most of us, days of swimming at the beach and outdoor evening jogs are numbered. Fall, however, is a great time to stay active outside by hiking or rock climbing. But if you're a Harry Potter fan, you might want to take to a field or the woods for some quidditch. Real-life quidditch? Yes -- it's possible. In fact, it's already being played by muggles around the country (not necessarily children, I might add). It's not the calorie burn of a long run on soft sand, but it's fun and it's free, except for all those extra brooms you may have to purchase. No magic required.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Are You Drinking Yourself Fat?

The latest health campaign in New York isn't aimed at stopping smoking or increasing HIV awareness, it's all about sugary drinks. The signature images of the ads show an iced tea, soda or sports drink being poured into a glass from a bottle and by the time the drink hits the ice cubes, it's turned into lard. In subway cars across the five boroughs, New Yorkers will spend the next three months with these pictures in the hopes that at least some people will ditch sweetened drinks for healthier refreshment. "Sugary drinks shouldn't be a part of our everyday diet," New York City Health Commissioner Thomas A. Farley said in a press release. "Drinking beverages loaded with sugars increases the risk of obesity and associated problems, particularly diabetes but also heart disease, stroke, arthritis and cancer." The scourge of soda is nothing new, but the public campaign to ditch other sweetened beverages is gaining traction. The American Heart Association recently called for Americans to cut back to no more than 100 calories of added sugar a day in our diet. About a quarter of teens in New York City slurp down a soda every day according to health surveys -- that's equal to about 360 calories -- more than three times what the AHA recommends. The posters are meant to be shocking, but they also help put things in perspective. The campaign points out that sodas used to be in 12-ounce cans, but now 20-ounce bottles are often the standard. And soda isn't the only culprit. The posters point out that "sports" and "energy" drinks are often high-sugar, low-nutrient beverages that should be avoided most of the time as well.
Continue reading Are You Drinking Yourself Fat?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Domino's Serves Up 'Food Porn'

Domino's Breadbowl Pastas have already been derided here at That's Fit and across the Internet for their ridiculous calorie count. Now, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, calls it out for what it is: Food porn. No matter which of the five options you choose, each dinner plate-sized breadbowl is filled with pasta and sauce and clocks in at 1,300 to 1,500 calories. "White-flour pasta with cream-cheese sauce can be a nutritional nightmare on its own," CSPI senior nutritionist Jayne Hurley said in a press release. "The last thing it needs is an 800-calorie white-bread pizza-crust bowl." And many people are probably not stopping at the single serving of only eating half of this dish. CSPI also takes Domino's to task for topping three of the dishes with Alfredo sauce, which the public interest group dubbed "heart attack on a plate" nearly a decade ago.
Continue reading Domino's Serves Up 'Food Porn'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cookie Dough is Back - With a Warning

One of America's favorite indulgences is back. Packages of cookie dough are hitting the stores after a nearly two-month hiatus as a result of Nestle Toll House's iconic yellow packages being voluntarily recalled after they were linked to an E. coli outbreak.

Let's be honest, there's a lot of people -- young and old -- who love to take a spoon directly to a diet-derailing roll of cookie dough. But Nestle has now slapped a "Do not consume raw cookie dough" warning label to discourage that behavior. There's also a blue label to let everyone know it's a "new batch," not to be confused with that old, potentially tainted roll of cookie dough sitting in your fridge.

Maybe this is the right time to ditch this late-night treat all together. If you want some chocolate chip cookies, bake them from scratch. We recommend trying out this oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe for a low-fat version of the classic treat.

Remember, even if you make the cookies yourself, the raw dough still carries the risk of salmonella from the uncooked eggs. But usually a bite of raw cookie dough that is homemade is just that, one or two bites.

The other problem with Toll House cookie dough is that everyone eats it right out of the container. Just like ice cream or a bag of chips, diving directly into the package is a sure-fire way to overeat. And when have you ever seen someone put raw cookie dough into a little bowl and eat a portion size of one or two cookies?

So go ahead and have a cookie every now and then. Just bake them first and keep portion size in mind.

Or if you're craving a sweet treat, try this one of these low-calorie desserts.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bring it On - How Competitive Is Your Family?

Last week my brother Thomas declared, "You're all going down." As one of the defending champions of the 2008 TTT, he isn't kidding.

This weekend is the start of the most important athletic event in my calendar year - the Tweed Tennis Tournament, commonly referred to as the TTT. It is a two-day single elimination mixed doubles tournament with a run off for third place, the coveted "winners of the losers" spot. When I confirmed if Uncle Lou and his girlfriend were playing - the answer was simply "We're playing to win." My cousin Laura told me she's just hoping her forehand holds up.

The trash talking doesn't begin Saturday at noon as the early rounds kick off, it goes on all year long - in person and via email. It forces me to get out and practice my terrible serve as soon as the weather is nice enough on the worn courts of New York City. I am not alone.
Continue reading Bring it On - How Competitive Is Your Family?

Permalink | Email this | Comments
