Just six weeks after giving birth, supermodel Heidi Klum strutted her hot-mama stuff at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in New York City Thursday night.

The plan was for Klum to just host the show. "You definitely have less pressure hosting, when you don't shake your booty in front of millions of people around the world," she told People Magazine earlier this week. But those plans changed when the 36-year-old mother of four wowed the crowd in a surprise walk down the runway.

Looking sexier than ever, Klum was all smiles as she sported a low-cut corset and full skirt. "I'm definitely one of the heaviest of the bunch of the 30 girls in the show. And I still have 20 pounds to go," she said, but the screaming audience didn't seem to mind -- or even notice.

The former Victoria Secret's model and current "Project Runway" host reportedly gained 45 pounds with this pregnancy, but has been working with a trainer at her home in L.A. to regain her famous figure. Her workouts include walking and some moves with a medicine ball, yet she's careful not to overdo it and she's not stressing over her post-baby figure. "I embrace that I have more curves right now."

With a full schedule that includes cooking meals for a family of six including singer-husband, Seal, Klum admits she has little time to relax these days. But that doesn't seem to stop this supermodel turned supermom from looking hotter than ever!

While she may have given into pregnancy cravings, Nicole Richie traded in burgers for sushi soon after giving birth to Sparrow. The swap paid off, because shortly after her son was born in September, Richie was spotted looking slim and trim. While Richie hasn't spoken on how she shed the post-baby pounds so quickly, she credited her weight loss after having daughter Harlow in 2008 to breastfeeding and eating "bland" foods, like soup and fish. Us Weekly also notes that regular Pilates classes helped Richie slim down.

Jessica gained 25 pounds while pregnant and said she craved all food in general but told Fit Pregnancy that she had a sudden desire for citrus based foods like lemonade and oranges.

Ginsburg-Spaly, X17online.com

How did Jessica Alba manage to look so slim shortly after giving birth to her daughter Honor Marie? She told me to put an elastic band around my waist -- any kind of band or girdle works."

The actress did, however, have to hit the gym to shape up to shoot Club Campari's annual calendar. "[The workouts] were horrible," she told the magazine.

It was reported in People that Jessica shed the baby weight on celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza's 321 Baby Bulge Be Gone plan. On it, Jessica opted for a low-fat, low-carb diet and worked out with her trainer six days a week.

You'd think there would be no surprises after having four kids, but supermodel Heidi Klum is still amazed at how her body changes during pregnancy. "The last month is unbelievable, how rapidly your stomach goes. It's huge," Klum told Page Six magazine. Klum told People she continued eating a clean diet that was light on carbs throughout her pregnancy.

Klum has reportedly been eating sensibly and working out in order to get back into shape. "I wouldn't say I'm back in shape yet. Everything changes when you get older. It was different when I was 31 with the first one and now being 36 with the fourth one." Klum famously walked the runway for the Victoria's Secret fashion show less than two months after having son Henry in 2005, and just hit the catwalk again -- only six weeks after giving birth to new daughter, Lou.

According to her husband, Jerry O'Connell, the supermodel and "Ugly Betty" star reportedly craved "a lot of ice cream."

Steve Granitz, WireImage.com

It was widely reported that Lopez began construction on a gym for her New York home before the babies were even born. After she got the okay from her doctor, the new mom began intense workouts with celeb trainer Gunnar Peterson that included cardio and strength-training using her own body weight as resistance. Jennifer also has been said to have avoided red meat and eaten four mini-meals a day that consisted of fruit, raw vegetables and lean protein. Another slimming secret: Ordering from Fresh Mommy, an all-natural food-delivery program for expectant or new moms.

"Is she really a she?" We all remember how that question was widely debated after South African runner, Caster Semenya, won the gold in the women's 800-meters at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in August. The rumors that started because some thought the athlete looked -- and ran, more like a man, subsequently put the gold medal in jeopardy. But Semenya's native sports ministry just announced that, yes indeed, she will be able to keep the medal.

In a statement on their web site, the South African Ministry of Sports and Recreation stated, "Because Caster has been found to be innocent of any wrong, she will retain her gold medal, retain her title of 800m World Champion and retain her prize money."

The ministry asked people to respect their decision. "We have also agreed with the IAAF that whatever scientific tests were conducted legally within the IAAF regulations will be treated as a confidential matter between patient and doctor. As such there will be no public announcement of what the panel of scientists has found. We urge all South Africans and other people to respect this professional ethical and moral way of doing things."

Continue reading Gender Questioned Caster Semenya Gets to Keep Gold Medal

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Biggest Loser's Rebecca and Daniel Dating

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Who says winning is everything? If you ask Rebecca Meyer, she might just tell you losing is. The latest castoff from "The Biggest Loser" told Jay Leno last Tuesday night that not only has she shed 122 pounds, but that weight loss allowed her to find the love of her life -- who has also lost big.

"I'm actually dating Daniel Wright...Daniel from the show," Rebecca said. Swearing that nothing had happened between the two during "The Biggest Loser," Rebecca said things heated up later. "After leaving the show we talked for, like, five, six-hour conversations and then...he told me he had feelings."

In case you're not a Biggest Loser junkie, 25-year-old Rebecca started this season at 279 pounds. Her weight struggles have gone from taunting schoolmates writing "Becky is fat" on her garage door to people now saying, "She's so ripped."
When Gregg McBride stepped on the scale one day, he thought it was broken. He later discovered the "error" message it displayed did not mean it was broken after all -- it just didn't go over 450 pounds, which was how much Gregg weighed at the time.

The 36-year-old's struggle with weight began in early childhood when his parents told him he couldn't eat junk food. But instead of setting a healthy example, this strict diet only hurt Gregg, so much so that he would steal money from his father's wallet to buy junk food and secretly scarf it down. "They thought they were helping," Gregg told the Today Show. "But in hindsight, I can see that they created a forbidden fruit. I ate junk food like it was going out of style."

Gregg's food addiction continued to get worse over the next 30 years. He was consuming nearly 9,000 calories a day on a menu that included soda for breakfast; several cartons of Chinese food and milkshakes for lunch; and a family-of-four-size meal from a fast-food restaurant for dinner, with a whole bag of cookies for dessert.

Despite Gregg's many attempts to lose the weight, nothing stuck ."I tried every diet out there: the wacky ones, the public ones, the dangerous ones," he said. "But I just kept getting bigger and bigger."

Gregg even tried a liquid fast where he didn't consume solid food for weeks. But when he spotted a half-eaten bag of potato chips in his trash, he stared at it for an hour before finally reaching in and devouring it.

Continue reading After Eating Food from the Trash, Man Loses 275 Pounds

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Muscular Development Basics: Muscles Grow Fast With Resistance Training, Rest and Nutrition

Filed under: Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements
Muscular development is dependent on resistance training, rest (i.e. alternating which muscles your daily weight-training routine will work out) and nutrition.

Resistance training -- typically, weight training, is the most important factor in building muscles. Lifting weights puts the muscles under repeated stress. This trauma to the muscle leads to tiny tears or injury to the muscle fibers. In an effort to repair or replace them, additional cells fuse to the fibers. The result is known as hypertrophy or growth of the muscle size.

Strength workouts need to be followed by a rest period to allow muscles to rebuild and get stronger so they can handle the stress again. It can take 36 to 72 hours for this to happen. That is why training the same muscles two days in a row is not recommended.

Nutrition also plays an important role in muscular development. Protein, in particular, is used by muscles for growth and repair. The recommended daily amount ranges from 36 to 72 grams. To calculate the amount of protein you need, simply multiply your weight by .36. Hard-core athletes will need a higher amount.

While muscular development is different for everyone, research shows that men and women respond similarly. However, genetics, body composition and gender play a role in the extent of hypertrophy that someone can attain.
She may not fit into her Daisy Duke shorts these days, but Jessica Simpson looks hotter than ever according to her younger sister, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.

In the December issue of Women's Health magazine, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz says, "My sister has an incredible body. I feel sorry for anyone who would judge her, because she's one sexy lady." Jessica has taken quite a bit of heat for her curvier figure, from a body-bashing cartoon to the tabloid firestorm the erupted after she was photographed looking noticeably heavier while singing at a chili cookoff.

While Ashlee may think her big sis looks great, Jessica has enlisted the help of her former personal trainer who whipped her body into shape for "The Dukes of Hazzard." Apparently she's working hard because in a recent tweet to her coach, Jessica said, "Why am I still hurting from our workout earlier? I'm getting old! See you tomorrow with a pouty face and sore buns."
Continue reading Ashlee Simpson Defends 'Sexy' Sister

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How to Get Six-Pack Abs

Six-pack abs: Everybody wants the tightly-defined bikini-ready stomach. But do you know how to get your stomach in shape?

That's Fit recently caught up with fitness expert, AOL Health contributor and That's Fit columnist Myatt Murphy, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and author of seveal best-selling fitness books, including "The Body You Want in the Time You Have" and "Ultimate Dumbbell Guide," who was able to shed some light on six-pack abs.

That's Fit: What exactly are six-pack abs?
Myatt Murphy: When you're talking about developing a classic six-pack stomach, what people are referring to is being able to see their rectus abdominus. What most people aren't aware of is that this stomach muscle is actually one, long sheet of muscle, not six different smaller muscles. What gives you that "six-pack" look are a series of tendons that criss-cross over the top to help protect and stabilize it. That one lesson is important to know because it can help you understand the right way to train this muscle.

TF: What, traditionally, has been the best way to achieve the defined look?
MM: Thanks to the fitness product industry, most people believe the key is doing certain ab exercises. The truth is, abdominal exercises will certainly help you strengthen and build your muscles, but they aren't that efficient at burning off the fat that covers most peoples' abs. The most important -- and unfortunately -- most overlooked-step is watching your diet and regular aerobic exercise.

TF: How much of achieving six-pack abs is based on diet and exercise versus gender and genetics?
MM: That depends on the individual. Some people are gifted with genetics that allow them to eat anything, avoid exercise and never displace much stored fat in their midsections. Others can be lean all over, but the first place they deposit fat is in their middle.

Your best bet is to follow all the steps towards achieving a leaner, tighter midsection and see what genetics has blessed you with. How prominent your six-pack will look after you've dieted and exercised enough will depend on your body shape, the size and length of the tendons that cover over your rectus abdominus and other genetic factors. But even if you never see a full "six" (some people only show a "four-pack"), being leaner around your middle and having a stronger midsection not only looks great, it'll keep you healthier and less prone to injury down the road.

TF: How quickly can you really expect to see results?
MM: It depends on your dedication. The fastest way to get a lean, muscular midsection is adhering to a strict diet, engaging in regular aerobic activity and performing exercises that shape and strengthen your abdominal muscles (so they look more prominent once the fat comes off). I've seen men and women who were able to achieve success in a matter of three or four weeks, while others have struggled for months. It is entirely up to you.

TF: What are the best exercises you can do to achieve six-pack abs and how often do you have to do them before you'll see results?
MM: There are countless exercises for your midsection, but two great rules of thumb are to make a point of training them every day, and to perform at least one exercise that trains your midsection from three different motions -- like a crunch, hanging knee raise and twists to work your obliques (otherwise known as "love handles").

One classic exercise that accomplishes all three in one is the bicycle crunch: Lie on your back with your legs straight and your feet raised an inch off the floor. Your hands should rest lightly behind your ears. To start the exercise, draw your left knee up toward your abs as you simultaneously curl your head and shoulders off the floor. Twist at the waist and try to touch your right elbow to your left knee. Lower yourself back down to the floor and repeat, this time curling your right knee up and trying to touch it to your left elbow. Alternate from left to right throughout the exercise and try to do as many repetitions as you can.

TF: Is it ever too late to try and get six-pack abs?
MM: Never. Every day you decide it's too late is just another day closer you could have been to having that six-pack stomach.

Many of the treadmills feature built-in pulse monitors, fans and an interactive workout disc that controls the speed and incline while a person's voice encourages you.

Because Proform treadmills are low-priced, they don't offer all of the benefits found in more expensive models. Some drawbacks include a smaller running surface than in other machines and a louder motor. Additionally, Proform treadmills come with a 90-day warranty whereas other exercise equipment might have a lifetime warranty.

Prices for Proform treadmills range from $599 to $1,699, and they are available through the Internet or most major sporting goods stores.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that kids' waistlines are expanding as rapidly as adults' these days. Just take a look around. With an estimated 33 percent of children overweight or obese, the husky kids who used to be the exception are now becoming the norm -- and being big as a kid can translate into big health problems later on.

Medical experts report that overweight kids are heart attacks just waiting to happen. One study from the New England Journal of Medicine found that today's kids are likely to become adults with heart disease, which translates to more hospitalizations, more medications, more medical procedures and a shorter life expectancy. Another study reported that if the number of overweight children continues to increase at the current rate, there will be 100,000 additional cases of heart disease by 2035.

Who are the main culprits for childhood obesity? Parents, for one. Carting in boxes of donuts to their little ones' soccer games, offering sugar-loaded fruit drinks as after-school snacks and replacing home cooking with deep-fried drive-thrus, parents are teaching kids some fattening life lessons. The average child today consumes 180 more calories a day than their leaner counterparts did in 1989. That can translate to an extra 18 pounds a year.
Continue reading Overweight Kids Doomed for Heart Disease

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stomach Bacteria May Cause Weight Gain

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss

Could probiotics help to stave off weight gain?

Even if you normally eat nothing but salads, one junk food binge may cause a serious shift in your body making it easier to pack on the pounds.

A new research study found that the type of food you eat can affect the type of bacteria in your stomach in as little as 24 hours, which can make gaining weight easier and losing it harder.

Researchers at the Washington University in St. Louis examined two types of stomach bacteria: Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. It's this bacteria that determines if the food you eat is stored as fat or burned as calories. While some bacteria in the stomach is good to help safeguard against disease, the amount of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes can make a difference in your waistline. And a major contributor to which type of bacteria people have is food.
Continue reading Stomach Bacteria May Cause Weight Gain

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Marie Osmond's Weight Loss Struggle

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment
Marie Osmond, the only girl out of nine children from a famous musical family, has always stood out. From singing that she's "a little bit country" with her brother on "Donny & Marie" to wowing the crowd at "Dancing with the Stars," it's hard to miss the 49-year-old celeb's appeal.

While Osmond's dazzling white smile and hearty laugh make it easy to like her, she admits she did not always like herself. From the early days on "Donny & Marie," Marie Osmond was made to feel self-conscious about her body. Weighing only 110 pounds at the time, producers told her to lose weight or the show would be canceled. From then on, Osmond faced an ongoing struggle with body image and a healthy lifestyle.

Marie Osmond admitted that she tried everything to drop the pounds including diet pills, bulimia and starving herself. She also spent many of her younger years worrying about her weight. After giving birth to her last child, the mother of eight said the weight just kept coming. Caring for a large family, trying to save a struggling marriage, enduring the death of her parents and battling postpartum depression had taken its toll. The once skinny public icon had gained 45 pounds and was in the worst shape of her life.

It was her oldest son who served as a much needed wake-up call.

Marie signed up for NutriSystem, started walking and eventually got herself in good enough shape to start dancing again. She was on "Dancing in the Stars" in 2007, which helped her with her weight loss.

Marie lost most of the 45 pounds by eating right and working out. Now a svelte size-two and spokesperson for NutriSystem, the country icon maintains her figure by hitting the gym and performing with brother Donny at a dance competition in Las Vegas. Donny Osmond has also followed his younger sister's lead and has shaped up with "Dancing with the Stars."
Well, there goes another myth we all wanted to believe. It seems the road to slimness is not paved with French pastries, cheese and wine after all. According to a new study, French women do indeed get fat.

Research results from TNS Sofres Healthcare and Swiss pharmaceuticals company Roche confirmed that the French paradox of being able to eat high-calorie, high-fat diets while remaining thin is simply not true. In fact, an estimated 26 percent of France's women are overweight today and another 15.1 percent are clinically obese.

For years, we have romanticized the French way of life and believed they knew the secret to staying thin. "French women used to be role models for a healthy lifestyle," says registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Sarah Krieger. "The French diet included a lot of whole foods, fruits and vegetables. How far would you go to lose weight? Would you let a 15-foot tapeworm live in your stomach in order to shed those unwanted pounds? The Tyra Show recently featured two women who would.

Click on the video above to see what a tapeworm looks like.

Chalk it up to shock TV, but it's true that some people become so desperate when traditional diets fail that they are willing to swallow a parasite to consume their extra calories. While this is arguably one of the most extreme methods of losing weight, it's actually nothing new. Ads dating back to the late 1800's feature a woman promoting the "easy to swallow, sanitized" tapeworms in order to lose weight without diet or exercise. Sounds like a magic diet pill -- eat whatever you want and still lose weight. Except this is no pill. It's the same parasite found in undercooked meat and seafood that can make people extremely ill.

In case you're not totally grossed out yet, here is how the tapeworm diet works: People ingest a tapeworm cyst from a cow (some come from pigs and fish too, but those are considered more dangerous). The tapeworm then grows inside the digestive tract absorbing calories from your body, which can result in losing one to two pounds a week. Once the target weight is lost, an antibiotic is taken to get rid of the tapeworm.
Continue reading Tapeworm Diet: A Crazy Way to Lose Lbs.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kettlebell Workout

Filed under: Fitness, Reviews & Products
A kettlebell workout is done with a kettlebell or traditional Russian weight used for strength training. Training with kettelbells builds strength without adding bulk by allowing users to develop lean muscles. Kettlebell workouts also increase explosive power, agility and stamina. Those who want to outfit their home gym without too much expense often turn to kettlebells, too. Just one or two kettlebells can replace tons of other equipment like weights, barbells, dumbbells and cardio machines.

Kettlebell workouts are effective for toning the entire body because multiple muscle groups are engaged throughout each exercise. These workouts can be customized to different fitness levels, but beginners should work with an experienced instructor to make sure they are using correct form. Like any other piece of exercise equipment, kettlebells that are used incorrectly can cause injuries.

Basic kettlebell moves include the swing, high pull, snatch, overhead press and Turkish get-up. Classic kettlebells can be purchased online and range in price from $47 to $218 each.

Amy Barnes once described food as her comfort, her solitude and her very best friend. That "friend" ended up costing Amy her health and her family.

Overweight for most of her life, Amy put on an additional 200 pounds during an abusive relationship with a boyfriend that lasted five years. "I used food to celebrate, to mourn, out of boredom and for comfort," she told the Today Show. The 35-year-old admitted she was addicted to food, just like someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. "I always had food in my hands."

Amy ballooned to 490 pounds and became too big to sit in an armchair or airplane seat, and too tired to walk up a flight of stairs or play with her children. "I had lost complete control over myself physically," she said. That loss of control landed Amy homeless and without her kids after a judge ordered her to "get healthy and get your life in order".

Continue reading Mom Loses 340 Lbs. to Regain Her Kids

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mariah Carey Flaunts A Fuller Figure

Mariah Carey showed off her curves while shooting the video for her song H.A.T.E.U. in Malibu. With a new album and movie coming out, Carey has been busy promoting both in skimpy outfits that show off her full figure, and her low-cut, backless swimsuit was no exception to the 40-year-old singer's less-is-more clothing philosophy. Carey doesn't seem to mind living with a few extra pounds though. "I'm a curvy girl and switch around with my diets all the time," she explained to the Daily Mail.

Plenty of speculation has been made about her recent weight gain, from living too much of the good life with her new 29-year-old hubby, Nick Cannon, to the possibility that she might be pregnant.
Continue reading Mariah Carey Flaunts A Fuller Figure

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eat Slower to Lose Weight

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss

If you're worried about packing on the pounds this holiday season, here's something to chew on: A new study revealed that simply slowing down during meal time can help you lose weight.

Researchers studied appetite-regulating hormones in a test group where each person was given the same thing to eat, 10 ounces of ice cream. One group was told to eat the entire bowl within five minutes; the other within 30 minutes. After reviewing participants' hormone levels before, during and after their meal, researchers concluded that eating too fast blocked the release of hormones that make you feel full. In short, the ones who ate within five minutes still wanted more ice cream when they were done, while the others didn't.

"Most of us have heard that eating fast can lead to food overconsumption and obesity, and in fact some observational studies have supported this notion," said study researcher, Alexander Kokkinos, MD, PhD, from Laiko General Hospital in Athens, Greece in a news release. "Our study provides a possible explanation for the relationship between speed eating and overeating by showing that the rate at which someone eats may impact the release of gut hormones that signal the brain to stop eating."

Continue reading Eat Slower to Lose Weight

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kate Winslet Wins $40K in Lawsuit After Paper Claims She Lied About Her Workouts

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has been awarded $40,000 in libel damages over allegations made by the U.K.'s Daily Mail that she lied about her exercise regime.

In a January 2009 article, the newspaper disputed a quote that Winslet gave to Elle magazine: "I don't go to the gym because I don't have time, but I do Pilates workout DVDs for 20 minutes or more every day at home." The article also featured naked photos of the actress, claiming that she must have worked harder on her figure. Her lawyer told reporters that the story was offensive in nature and "simply not true".
Continue reading Kate Winslet Wins $40K in Lawsuit After Paper Claims She Lied About Her Workouts

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ephedrine: An FDA-Banned Diet Pill

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Ephedrine is an alkaloid, or chemical compound, found in the plant ephedra and is traditionally used in Chinese medicine and some over-the-counter and prescription medications. More recently, it has been marketed as a diet pill.

Ephedra-containing products stimulate the central nervous system and often include additional stimulants, such as caffeine, to promote weight loss. According to the Food and Drug Administration, ephedra has been found in weight-loss supplements and products to increase energy levels and athletic performance. Some variations of ephedra have even been sold as alternatives to illegal drugs.

The use of ephedrine has been controversial because of side effects such as high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, nerve damage, muscle injury, psychosis and memory loss. More serious results have also been reported, including heart attack, stroke, seizure and death. Because ephedrine and supplements containing it have been linked to unreasonable risk of illness or injury, according to the Mayo Clinic, ephedrine is currently banned in the U.S.
