Thanks to lessons learned during season six, not only are Amy and Phil Parham still thin, but they've also just penned a new weight loss book, "The 90-Day Fitness Challenge," to inspire others toward lasting weight loss.

If you've lost a ton of weight or are seeking a major jump-start, Amy and Phil have been where you are. That's Fit recently spoke with Phil about the Parham's DREAM principles of weight loss, food addiction and the oh so tricky business of weight maintenance after losing big.

The book was born after the Parhams returned home from the finale and organized a weight loss challenge in their home state of South Carolina. "We had 850 people show up," said Phil. "We talked to them about dreams, possibilities and how your life can change. We had to do something with these folks; we called it a 90-day fitness program, and over 2,500 people signed up to receive our daily e-mails." Thousands of pounds were lost, and "that great idea became the book," said Phil.

The first two DREAM principles are dreaming what you want your life to be and recognizing where you are today. In the book, Phil explained how he avoided his weight problem, even averting his eyes from mirrors around the house. The Parhams recommend you get honest, then tick off a practical list of action steps to get you safely on the road to losing the weight. Eat to live, activate your body and make a difference in the lives of others round out the DREAM principles.

The 90-day program that follows includes a daily inspirational quote; mini-challenge; tip of the day; and space to journal your food, water, fitness and thoughts. Each page is crafted from the hearts of two formerly obese people, not an expert trainer with a new fitness program to sell.

"We know what it feels like when your knees hurt and your feet ache," said Phil. "One of our daily challenges is to find shoes that are fitted to your feet. The properly fitted shoe can keep somebody walking and working out. We felt like no one was talking about that kind of stuff to the heavy person."

The Parham's religious faith and weight loss are intertwined throughout. "The book has a spiritual slant because we really believe there's a whole lot more to losing the weight than not eating candy bars," he said. "Look inside yourself, look at what's been holding you back. Those are the big underlying emotional, spiritual elements we discovered."

To keep the weight off, the Parhams drink only water, almond milk, coffee and an occasional unsweetened tea. They split entrees when eating out. A small ice cream is a rare treat. "We're creatures of habit and once you've got those certain breakfasts that you like, sandwiches you like and salad bars you like ... we've done it so long it's sort of our lifestyle," said Phil. He is not a food addict anymore but admits Mexican food is sometimes still a challenge.

We haven't heard the last from the Parhams. Phil said Amy has a book coming out next year, "10 Lessons From a Former Fat Girl," and they're working on a 90-day fitness challenge version for kids. For instant support, check out the Parham's online social network.

Jillian Michaels just released her new "Shred It With Weights" DVD -- perfect timing for your own 90-day transformation.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Book Review: Ed Ugel's "I'm With Fatty"

Melanie Dunea

Who doesn't obsess about favorite foods? Pizza, egg rolls, a creamy milk shake with whipped cream on top. But Edward Ugel's comical confessional, "I'm With Fatty," reveals food addicts suffer from food obsessions far deeper. Over time the weight packs on, the sleep apnea starts and suddenly you're strapping on a continuous positive airway pressure sleeping mask or facing a shorter life.

In his new book, Ugel bluntly chronicles the ups and downs of his "Fatty Project" quest to lose 50 pounds in a year in order to ditch the CPAP and save his life. He lost major weight with the help of a trainer and an empowering nutritionist who helped him realize he is a food addict. For all the guys who shamefully lust for food like a secret lover and the confused women by their sides, this book is for you.

That's Fit recently spoke to Ugel about the distinction between food addiction and simply loving food and how he's keeping the weight off now that the book is published and the unromantic sleeping mask is history.

That's Fit: How does a person know he's crossed the line into an eating disorder, such as compulsive overeating or binge eating versus just being a foodie?

Edward Ugel: Food addiction is something we can all relate to. For me, it was being asked questions by someone other than myself [his nutritionist, Janet] that maybe I knew the answer to but never asked myself. Do you eat late at night? Do you eat when you're angry? The same questions they ask other addicts. You start to realize this isn't just about me loving food, this is about me having some really unhealthy relationships with food at the same time.

Where is the line? Have you asked yourself the tough questions? Have you gotten on the scale and looked at your food history? Having a food journal was a real eye-opener to see if I was addicted to food or compulsively eating. I didn't go into Janet's thinking I was a food addict. Maybe that was incredibly naive, but I walked out of there completely comfortable with saying I'm a food addict.

TF: Are you still off the CPAP? Was it a trigger to the book?

EU: I am. It was a hell of a trigger; it sent a shock wave through my life. There's no way to look cool in it. There's no way to woo your wife in bed. There's no way to not feel like a complete schmuck wearing it. You have to wear this contraption because you have let your weight get out of control.

TF: At the beginning of the book you ask, "Can someone love food, love eating and still be able to change his body?" Now that you're nearly 50 pounds down, do you obsess about food the same way you did at 263 pounds?

EU: I am still passionate about food. Am I obsessed with it? No, not on a good day. But food is such a big part of my life. I grew up in a family of restauranteurs and am drawn to the art and passion that cooks share. I don't blame food for my weight; I blame me. The goal of the book was not to get rid of this food addiction but to recreate this relationship in a healthier way. I still look at the deli case, but I won't order anything, or it will just be be a slice or two, not a pound and a half.

TF: You lost more than 10 percent of your goal after colonics followed by a juice cleanse. Is this a winning combination for lasting weight loss?

EU: No, absolutely not. It's an unintended result of removing the toxins. But it was a hell of an experience and gave me great material for the book. It was an unbelievable week, doing things to or for my body that I'd never dreamed of. It was a real kick-start.

TF: Why the word "fatty" in the title?

EU: I purposely chose to use the word "fatty" because it's not only polarizing, but my weight and body issues have been a problem for me since before puberty. "Fatty" is a punch in the nose, I think it's going to draw people's attention. But for me it was really about trying to swallow this word so it no longer had such an impact on my personal life. I've always been so ashamed of my weight that it has precluded me from doing a lot of things in my life that I've wanted to do.

TF: If you can afford just one -- trainer or nutritionist?

EU: Absolutely, unequivocally, trainer. But if Weight Watchers was an option, I'd choose Weight Watchers. The last line of my book is, "I'm supposed to be here [at Weight Watchers]." I thought I was better than Weight Watchers, but it took about five minutes to realize that was a bunch of hooey. That place is for all-comers, and as long as you're willing to be honest with yourself, they can help. After the book was written, I went up a little bit, and I've used Weight Watchers to go back down. For someone in my skin, this is going to be a lifelong battle. I'm going to win some rounds and lose some rounds.

It's refreshing to see a new weight loss book with humorous stories a guy can appreciate -- like Ugel wolfing down box after box of Chinese while his wife was out of town. Now men may lose weight easier than women, but are they as equally insecure about being overweight?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Losing It With Jillian Finale: Making Diabetes Disappear

Jillian was in top food-toss form in the season finale of "Losing It With Jillian," twisting every drop of grease and sugar right out of the Alvarez family from Miami, Fla. Once again, the show features a family eating itself to near-death, with few calories burned between meals. But the Alvarez's did place a 911 call to Jillian -- a promising signal they're finished with denial and ready for action in the kitchen and gym. It takes both to lose weight.

Mom and Dad. At 170 pounds, mom Carmen is 60 pounds beyond her ideal weight of 109. Dad David Sr. is seriously obese at 328 pounds on a frame that should bear 180. His sleep apnea is in dire need of treatment -- one of the worst cases Dr. Van Herle has ever seen. But instead, stubborn David chose to pitch his sleep apnea machine awhile back. Jillian accurately labeled that move as "overwhelmingly selfish." She's also frustrated Dr. Van Herle won't release David Sr. for exercise exceeding 140 beats per minute. No tearing dad down and building back up in the gym.

Like Father, Like Son. Most responsibly, the show didn't advertise the weights of daughter Melissa and eight-year-old David Jr. However the little guy is grossly overweight and regularly has to stick himself to monitor his pre-diabetes blood sugar. Both father and son have fasting insulin levels three times higher than normal. Seeing an innocent child this unhealthy thanks to poor family eating and fitness habits makes you want to scream.

First Confrontation Punch. With only a week to work with, Jillian threw a couple sharp punches to get the family's attention. When Carmen confirmed David Jr. is pre-diabetic due to his diet, Jillian asked the family, "Is he buying that food himself?" Yes, kids can wear parents down by begging for the empty carbs and sugary snacks 24/7, but parents typically have final say on which foods hit the grocery cart. Stand strong, and if you're an influential aunt or uncle, slice up apples for a snack.

Then the Knockout. Considering Jillian's past controversial rant over Indian Fry Bread, the Alvarez family didn't have a chance once the Latin fried bread with syrupy sugar entered the house for an extended family dinner. After staring at the table featuring a fat-filled cut of pork, salt-packed white rice and yucca steeped in oil (and the sticky bread), Jillian laced her gloves and fired a knockout one-liner. Looking at the grandparents, Jillian asked, "Talk to me about how you would feel if you had to bury your son?" Whether or not it was a below-the-belt shot, it definitely had an impact. Grandpa Alvarez feebly explained, "That's what we eat for long time." A more questionable punch came when Jillian pointed out David Jr. could possibly lose his sight and limbs from diabetes someday. Now that was a low blow -- he's eight years old, not even close to being a teenager. He didn't need to hear that Jillian-style.

Trash Bags. With the family still in shock, Jillian hit the cupboards and together everyone tossed out nearly everything with sugar, unhealthy fats and preservatives, leaving beans and salad (no croutons) for dinner. Most of America's cupboards would be slim pickings if they made the same move today. Go for it -- you then get to stock with the good stuff.

A Market Paradise. In the week's most relaxing moment, Jillian took the Alvarez family on a field trip to a local farmer's market. Jillian looks completely at home among the organic fare, and she's right that regularly visiting a market can teach you what healthy foods look like. Processed foods don't come from a farmer's field. Head to one this week and prepare at least two healthy meals from the foods you purchase.

Party Do-Over. Later in the week, David Jr.'s ninth birthday party featured a re-worked menu with seasoned, lean pork loin, brown rice, black beans and boiled yucca. Jillian then gave the birthday boy karate gear to complement his new hobby inspired by the fit diva herself. The Alvarez's were all smiling. Have a weight problem and need family support? Clue in your relatives that the next family get together is going to be healthy foods only. They'll take you more seriously if you have them watch the finale episode highlights over at NBC before they come over.

Six weeks post-Jillian, Melissa looks cut and Carmen lost 25 pounds. David Sr. was medically released for exercise, then lost 54 pounds and all his blood pressure meds, too. Dad's next goal is to lose the sleep apnea for good. The most gratifying life makeover was David Jr. -- he shed an incredible 25 pounds and his blood sugars are normal. No more pre-diabetes, no more puffy face -- just like that.

Jillian's bonus check will support an after school fitness program that David Jr. kicked-off at school. He's also boldly bending the lunch ladies' ears with a total grease report each day at school lunch. Grandmother Alvarez can't stop crying with joy, but you can bet she's stopped bringing over the fatty foods.

That's a wrap for Season One at "Losing It With Jillian." Fans only saw the highlights of Jillian's magic each week, but her game-changer strategies are turning families around one by one. Who knows how many other families are doing the same?

We'll see you this fall as That's Fit covers double-digit Season 10 of "The Biggest Loser."

Trae Patton, NBC

"Losing It With Jillian" headed to the Yavapai Apache Nation reservation in Arizona this week to answer a call for help placed by the multi-generational Plunkett-Marquez family. Seeing Type 2 diabetes and obesity rampant across the reservation, Jillian realized this whirlwind week needed to address the ways of the entire tribal community.

Plunkett-Marquez Meet the Doc. Dr. Van Herle's health assessment of the family wasn't pretty. Grandmother Delores is grossly overweight, diabetic, and has survived two heart attacks and a stroke. Daughter Cora-Lei Marquez carries 203 pounds on a body that should ideally support only 120. Her LDL cholesterol and blood sugar are high. Daughter Delight weighs 257 pounds instead of a healthy 132. Fifteen-year-old grandson Brandon hides his 253 pounds behind baggy clothing and is a ripe candidate for diabetes. Dr. Van Herle emphasized Native Americans are facing some of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the country. The future is bleak for their youth -- there's a 68 percent increase in diabetes for this culture's 15-19 year-olds.

Fry Bread Hits the Trash. Fry bread is a traditional American Indian food that instantly raised Jillian's blood pressure without ever touching her lips. She first discovered fry bread is actually a white flour dough fried in lard, then witnessed dozens of patties being fried in anticipation of a tribal picnic. Jillian craves dramatic moments to spark changes in behavior, so she impulsively dumped the fry bread in the trash as the picnic kicked off. In response, one boy threw his fry bread loaded with toppings all over Jillian's leather jacket. Others watched in disbelief. Jillian was shaken, not knowing if this diet statement would ruin her relationship with the community.

Toss or No Toss? Cora-Lei sits on the tribal council. She later explained to Jillian that throwing away the fry bread insulted the Indian way of never wasting food. Let's be honest here, it was shockingly rude. Perhaps Jillian could have symbolically tossed her own fry bread serving instead of every piece at the picnic. But Jillian's way is impetuous, and that fried Frisbee had her angrier than a contestant threatening to walk off the set of "The Biggest Loser." She did make an excellent point when she asked Cora-Lei what lard and flour have to do with the ancient Indian tradition of hunting and gathering real food straight off the land. "Fry bread is not only 100 percent not of your tradition, fry bread is, seemingly, a representation of everything horrible that's ever happened to your people," said Jillian. "That food is poison." Read Jillian's book, "Master Your Metabolism," and you'll understand why processed junk poisons our health. Also, Jillian isn't the first to attack fry bread. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that one fry bread on a plate yields at least 700 calories and 27 grams of fat -- before the toppings.

Apathy. In a fit world, talk is cheap and action is everything. Only a handful of the community showed up to hear Dr. Van Herle speak to the reservation about healthy living. Jillian could not figure out why Delight would feed her four-year-old son junk food, and seemed so apathetic about wanting to lose weight. Amidst tears of sadness and frustration, Delight explained it's difficult to tell her son "no." Also, she simply doesn't understand how she can lose weight and get fit. She needs guidance. Those tears were a catalyst for Delight. She was emotionally armed and Jillian was educating her how to take action. It's also time to tell your children "no," then pull out a delicious plate of fresh fruits and veggies for them before your workout.

Fry Bread Buzz. Turns out the fry bread incident generated a positive stir among many in the community, explained tribal elder, Don Decker. Jillian breathed a sigh of relief, then started marketing her end-of-week fun walk to the Yavapai Apache Nation. Over a hundred showed up -- Jillian's diet and fitness seeds were officially planted. Sign up for that late summer/early fall 5K in your community and maybe you'll plant a seed yourself.

Before Jillian departed for a six-week hiatus, Cora-Lei challenged her entire community to change their habits. Six weeks later, Cora-Lei was 33 pounds lighter, lost six dress sizes and feels empowered to accomplish any life challenge. Delight dropped 30 pounds and her blood sugar level is down 30 percent. Brandon amazingly shed 52 pounds, no longer wears baggy clothes and is planning to try out for football and basketball next year. Delores lowered her blood glucose by 21 percent, cholesterol by 43 percent and lost 18 pounds -- proving that a modest six-week walking program paired with healthy eating can work miracles. Of course, Jillian handed the Yavapai Apache nation a generous check to fund a local fitness program.

Let's hope this 2,000-strong community ends up the star of a future "Losing It With Jillian" reunion special. See you next week as one dad struggles with Jillian for power by ignoring her gym commands. Not a good idea.

NBC

In this week's "Losing It With Jillian," Jillian Michaels visited the Northern family from Goodlettsville, Tenn. After her pre-visit spy cam revealed the Northerns sitting down to a Southern dinner registering at over 14,000 calories, Jillian's mood turned south. The Northerns can say goodbye to their deep fryer filled with wings. No way will that meal fly on Jillian's watch.

Jillian Rides the Anger Edge. Upon witnessing the 14,000-plus calorie dinner, Jillian was "pissed." Deep fryer rage or not, this was an overreaction. Whether it's deep dish pizza or the Northern's deep-fried wings paired with fat-laden macaroni and cheese, no overeating family deserves that kind of first impression from their trainer.

Over Half Fat. Jillian ordered the Northerns to put down their wings, grab their workout clothes and head for a medical intervention with Dr. Van Herle. Turns out the patriarch of the family, Patrick, weighs 329 pounds compared to a healthy weight of 192 for his frame. Heading for a heart attack, he's also sporting high blood pressure and cholesterol. Mom Kim weighs 283 instead of a healthy weight of 139, and her body fat measured a shocking 53 percent. Interestingly, a medical assessment of their 14-year-old twins, Ameer and Ameera, was not broadcast. Makes sense -- the kids are already overwhelmed with fear their parents are headed for an early death.

Do You Stash Junk Food? After a first workout where Patrick repeatedly gave up, Jillian ordered a kitchen clean-up. Patrick revealed several spots he squirrels away sugary snacks, while Kim opened up her nightstand to reveal a bag of candy she sometimes raids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whether you're hiding treats from the kids or stashing the junk out of sight of your conscience, those easy carbohydrates will beckon if they're in the house. A truly clean kitchen doesn't include moon pies in secret hiding places. Toss 'em now.

Your Body Takes Orders. After collapsing and sliding off the end of the treadmill, Patrick claimed his leg gave out. Jillian didn't buy it. "You tell your body what you need it to do and it will do it," she told him. Stop listening to your body's uncertainty and start ordering it around. Jillian believes your gym mind can conquer all, provided you get to the root of your unhealthy eating and moving habits. But you have to wonder if someone will seriously be injured one of these days. Hurling off the end of a treadmill is a real risk.

Self-Esteem Makeover. Jillian discovered day one that Patrick's low self-esteem was literally weighing the family down. He was out of a job, unmotivated and emotionally shut down towards his wife. His apathy was tearing everyone apart. He was even too scared to dance. Jillian used brutal workouts and straight talk to unravel Kim in front of Patrick. The guy loves his wife and he then began to open up. Jillian's unique brand of trainer therapy occurs in a gym, not a couch.

Partner Training. After Patrick got honest with his feelings of failure, he began to feel success in the gym. That's when Jillian had him partner train with Kim. Get your workout relationship on even ground and switch off partner training with your mate. It's cheaper than personal training and empowers your relationship. Here are a few partner poses to stretch you farther.

Family Is Everything. As the week progressed, Patrick joined his family for an afternoon of rollerskating -- the first active fun the Northerns had enjoyed together in a long time. Make your next family night a moving one, not a movie night.

As the week wrapped up, Kim declared her goal to lose 30 pounds and have that 40-plus-one birthday party she'd avoided after failing again and again to lose weight. Jillian challenged her to lose 40 instead. Patrick vowed to communicate with his wife, take some of the pressure off of her and lose 60 pounds. Jillian didn't ratchet up that goal.

After eight weeks, Kim entered her surprise 40-and-change birthday party 41 pounds lighter and four dress sizes smaller. Patrick lost 61 pounds, four shirt sizes and whittled his waistline to 44 inches from a pre-Jillian 52. He's also working again and dancing. Ameer and Ameera look happy, healthy and relieved. To top it off, Jillian handed the Northerns $50,000 before heading out to her next assignment. See you next week as Jillian attempts her techniques on a morbidly obese teenage boy.

Just when you lose faith in your ability to ever lose the weight, in strolls trainer Jillian Michaels. Her third episode of "Losing It with Jillian" was personal coaching first, sweat next. This time the May family from Bakersfield, Calif. opened their door to Jillian's no nonsense personal training with a soft heart.

President Obama's national address took priority over Jillian's first few minutes last night. The episode opened in the midst of a confrontation between the overweight trio of mom, Ruth May, and daughters Ashley and Rachael. As usual, weight and personal issues were intertwined.

Your Life Is Yours. Jillian called Ruth out on her victim mentality. "You think in life everything happens to you," Jillian said, "and because you feel that way you're never able to take control because you're always the victim of a situation." It's the same with weight, really. Ruth divorced two years ago. She has a serious weight problem and takes meds to control her blood pressure and cholesterol. She's too focused on her children to invest in her own adult relationships. Start taking ownership of your weight problem to take back control of your life. When you overeat for years without consistent exercise your quality of life is the victim.

Novices Have No Excuses. Now it was Jillian's turn with daughter Ashley. Jillian's strategy focused on improving Ashley and her mother's relationship to trigger a physical transformation, then they hit the gym. But when Ashley faced Jillian's grueling series of treadmill sprints, she gave up, saying, "It's only been a week." Jillian retorted, "It's only been a whole life." Ashley got moving. Stop pulling back from your workouts, begin putting in the time and intensity for Jillian-style results.

Just OK Isn't Good Enough. Turns out Rachael is one smooth customer in the gym. She's a natural. So why does she have a weight problem? Weighing the least of mom and daughters, Rachael admitted she's afraid to fail and would rather settle for being "OK." Jillian asked her to stop taking second place in life. Are you settling for just OK?

Up the Ante. At the end of the week, Jillian was all ears for the May family life goals. Ashley announced she'd like to drop 40 pounds. Rachael was going for a size seven until Jillian pressured her to work toward a six. Beyond improving the relationship with her family and building new friendships, Ruth decided 20 pounds was a worthy goal. Jillian upped that to 60 pounds. Think big, lose big.

Eight weeks later Ashley is 34 pounds and five dresses skinnier. Most importantly, she regards her new habits as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Jillian was right -- Rachael did make that size six. Yet the best moment was seeing Ruth 74 pounds lighter and off the blood pressure and cholesterol medication. The Mays also scored Jillian's usual $50,000 parting gift. Live with Jillian for a week and odds are you'll lose serious weight. Time will tell after the cameras leave if they have a realistic shot at keeping it off.

Jillian Michaels scored an upper body workout thanks to the Jones family on this week's episode of "Losing It With Jillian." Debra Jones and family from Cambridge, Mass. had a week-long visit from Jillian, but the first night the fitness guru opted for a hotel instead. There literally wasn't enough room for the petite trainer -- Debra has a hoarding problem. So before the weight loss could begin, Jillian flexed her already-cut biceps and kicked off a house clean-up.

Reality Check Time. The focus is 53-year-old Debra, along with 12-year-old daughter Isabella and 10-year-old son Jordan. Debra's husband died six years ago of a sudden heart attack at the very same age of 53. A reality check with Dr. Van Herle found Debra is really 63 years old in physical years, and at 239 pounds, she's nearly double her ideal weight of 130 pounds. Make sure to schedule that physical and get the real scoop. Beyond weight, Debra has all the genetics of dangerous heart disease, including diabetes and high cholesterol. Track the state of your body no matter how long you've been laying on the couch. It's a first step off the fluffy pillows.

Tragedy and Weight Gain. After personal tragedy strikes, weight gain can follow. Debra's husband died six years ago and she's isolated herself with work, motherhood and zero fitness thrown in. Although, poor fitness habits were well in place before the terrible loss of her husband -- Debra admitted she hasn't worked out in 20 years.

Vocalize Your Goal. Don't just write down that upcoming workout, verbalize it. Jillian had Debra reiterating small goals on the treadmill by repeating them aloud. If you say it, you'll do it. Do whatever you can to motivate yourself -- the simplest vocal cue may rewire your motivation for fitness.

Support at Work. Jillian taught Debra to reach out and find fitness at work. Turns out her co-workers have a running club, so Debra joined up to begin training for a 5K. Co-workers are a perfect fitness accountability group. Here are Jillian's tips on training safely for that 5K.

Chop the Garlic. Jillian says garlic is super food -- good for your immune system, heart health and can even lower cholesterol. Here's a That's Fit Recipe Rehab for spaghetti carbonara with three whole cloves of the good stuff.

Jillian Lose-Its and Breakthroughs

Jillian had to tone down her confrontational style when Isabella and Jordan were around. But she continually challenged Debra to the point of physical, then emotional, exhaustion. Debra learned she deserves to be happy and healthy, while her children need their childhood back.

The Jones family discovered every workout does not need to be grueling. They love paddling a canoe. Debra and Isabella sweated it up in a dance class together. Be creative in your family fitness fun. Walks and playgrounds count, but there are so many other opportunities out there.

Jillian taught a valuable lesson about children and weight loss. At a final goal-setting session, Isabella boldly announced she wanted to lose 20 pounds. Jillian nixed that one, explaining kids need to think about being healthy, not losing weight. Isabella then stated she'd join her school's running club. Jillian makes an excellent point -- set a good example for your kids and stick to conversations about staying healthy together, not shedding pounds. Remember, fit moms (and dads) lead by example.

Debra's goal was to lose 30 pounds, run a 5K and leave her diabetes in the dust after six weeks. So she dug deep and trained with co-workers three times a week, headed to the gym every morning and ate more salads. Jillian returned for the 5K with a stack of pink Team Deb t-shirts. While Debra's bruised knee had her hobbling race day, she finished. Most amazingly, Debra is 32 pounds lighter, her blood sugar levels are normal and she expects to be off diabetes meds shortly. All this in six weeks thanks to a big push from "Losing It With Jillian." To top it off, Jillian handed the Jones family $50,000. Delivering cash and quality of life, Jillian has to be the best houseguest ever. See you next week as Jillian attempts her magic on the May family.

Knock, knock -- Jillian Michaels is here. The premiere of "Losing It With Jillian" was pure Jillian with a touch of "Supernanny" and "Dr. Phil" thrown in. Michaels made her first house call to the Mastropiestro family from Wilmington, Mass., complete with breaded chicken cutlets fried in a bottle of oil. The Mastropiestros had serious Jillian gym time ahead of them, but the key to their weight loss was working on their emotions first. Let's take a look at how the Mastropiestros went from giving up on day one in the gym to losing serious weight in just six weeks.

Imagine 18 weeks of "The Biggest Loser" squeezed into five days with Jillian stalking you at home and in the gym. Except this time Jillian has a clear view into the relationship dynamics that so often help fuel family obesity. She kicked off the show with the medical facts, introducing the Mastropiestros to Dr. Van Herle from the New England Rehabilitation Hospital for the grim stats.

The Physical Reality. Father Jim is 296 pounds after gastric bypass, over 40 percent body fat and at dangerous risk for heart attack and stroke. That's after gastric bypass. Twenty-something-looking son Michael isn't too far behind at 239. Mom Agnes is 261 pounds, over half fat and has lost and gained 100 pounds seven times. Daughter Michelle used to weigh 260, but has since seriously slimmed down after gastric bypass. Oh, and she's getting married in six weeks. What's your physical reality? Meet with a doctor and figure out your starting stats before beginning that diet and fitness program.

The Enabler Chef. That's Michelle in the kitchen. While she's chomping down iceberg lettuce at dinner, she's frying chicken in 6,400 calories of oil. Allegedly, Michelle's dad demands foods cooked that way and admits he pretty much eats until he heads off to sleep. Michelle says food is the glue that keeps them together.

Living to Eat. The Mastropiestros eat, eat, and then keep eating. Lack of exercise is part of the problem, but their eating habits are horrendous. "Dinner is never ending. Once you start eating it's for the rest of the night," said Agnes. Whoa, if that's your family eating style, watch out. Families don't become obese together by eating balanced, healthy meals, hydrating, and taking long walks after dinner. It is possible to come together over a healthy meal too.

Jillian Lose Its and Breakthroughs

After Agnes gave up moments into her first gym workout, Jillian was whipping a water bottle and screaming, "Don't try Agnes, do. Go!" Then Jim gave up, and Jillian walked out of the gym. Of course, Agnes and Jim chased her down. Try doesn't cut it, so stop trying and start doing every day.

In an unforgettable moment, Agnes explained her weight problem began after they lost their newborn son 31 days after birth. She's been grieving alone for 22 years -- husband Jim won't speak of it, and there's no headstone on their son's grave. Jillian called a family meeting and Jim began openly grieving, triggering emotional healing for the entire family. Jillian opened up the communication in the family to allow the weight loss to begin.

Fitness is transcendent. Jillian said fitness is more than physical -- it's a tool to rebuild your life. Now that Agnes found her voice, Jillian had her push Jim to his limits in the gym. Agnes barked out commands, he willingly followed, she became empowered in a strengthening relationship. Move over Dr. Phil.

Gastric is a partial fix. In working with post-gastric-bypass Michelle, Jillian explained weight loss surgery doesn't aid the emotional/thinking patterns of obesity. Michelle's self-worth remains that of an obese young woman, not a svelte bride-to-be. Changing that must be her focus moving forward.

Set a Goal. Sounds simple, but vocalizing your fitness and weight goals are important steps in your personal transformation. Agnes said she wanted to lose 30 pounds by Michelle's wedding; Jim hopes to drop 50. They also declared a desire to improve their relationship.

The series premiere proves a fast five days with Jillian is an asset, not a liability. Like "Supernanny," the beauty of "Losing It With Jillian" is the immense amount of time Jillian actually spends with a family to address the physical and emotional patterns of dysfunction, while simultaneously overhauling years of diet and fitness neglect. In happy-ending fashion, producers closed the show with Jillian's invitation to the Mastropiestro family wedding six weeks later. Jim lost 48 pounds, 10 inches around the waist and his blood pressure is normal. Agnes lost 34 pounds and cholesterol is normal. Michael lost 25 and and has sworn off sweets. Bride Michelle and the entire Mastropiestro family scored a spectacular Jillian gift -- an all-inclusive Caribbean honeymoon for bride and groom, and the wedding tab covered by jillianmichaels.com. Consider that a little Oprah thrown in, too.

See you each Wednesday for all the "Losing It With Jillian" lose its and breakthrough tips to get your diet and fitness plans rolling this summer. Take a jog, eat a hearty salad, then tune in earlier -- the show's new time slot will be 8/7C. Next week features a divorced mom with a weight and hoarding problem.

With hundreds of pounds shed over a few short months, each season of "The Biggest Loser" leaves us with a few more tools in our health and fitness toolbox. Season 9 was no exception, although running 18 weeks with a two-week hiatus for the Olympics made for one long season. Whether your weight yo-yos like Season 3 champ Erik Chopin, you're at your heaviest ever or you've recently dropped dozens of pounds, Season 9 offered the scale-conscious a few new tips. May your resolve for a healthy summer match the high ratings that keep this show on air season after season.

Moot Point of No Return. The heaviest cast member ever (529 pounds), Michael Venrella, won Season 9 after losing 264 pounds -- a little over half of himself (50.19 percent). Stop saying you're too heavy to lose weight -- there is never a point of no return when it comes to weight loss. Accommodate that bad knee by workouts in the pool; start eating right and the weight will come off.

Snacking Inhibits Weight Loss. Studies show regular snacking makes you more prone to swallowing extra calories. Jillian says stick with three meals and one small snack between lunch and dinner. It's simple to track in your food diary, too.

We Love Curtis. Chef Curtis Stone kept tossing healthy eating tips our way. Caramelize your food to add sweetness without added sugar. Or try this 300-calorie chicken cacciatore and chipotle grilled pork tenderloin with braised cabbage. Healthy can be gourmet.

You're Never Over It. When describing Week 14's buffet temptation, O'Neal said, "You're never really over the things that got you here." If you've battled with your weight, you're not alone. Recognize now it's a lifelong battle. Moderation forever is the key to a healthy, fit body. Crash diets don't work.

Prevent Survival Mode Metabolism. Jillian advises eating strictly for two days, moderately for three days then slack slightly over the weekends. A splurge here and there will help you stick to the low-cal days and confuse your metabolism enough to keep it humming.

Suze Was Wrong and Right. Financial analyst, Suze Orman, predicted Sunshine would sweep Season 9 thanks to healthy finances. Koli would have secured Suze's vote if he counted calories more regularly. OK, so Suze was wrong on her Sunshine pick. But considering Koli was her number two choice and lost the highest percentage of weight of any contestant and the $100,000,

Hit Your Burn. Yes, count calories swallowed, but don't forget to focus on calories burned. Daris wasn't losing the weight as fast as other big-guy contestants because his burn during workouts was 1,500 calories short. Try focusing on reaching a prescribed daily calorie burn to jumpstart your weight loss. It's the winning formula on "The Biggest Loser" supported by those BodyBuggs. Put one on your gift list -- the contraption helped this That's Fit Success Story lose 70 pounds.

Parental Responsibility. O'Neal's warm heart and honesty was a real winner with the trainers and fans. A formerly fit O'Neal admitted he was always strict with his sons when it came to soda and sweets, but he parented his daughter, Sunshine, differently. O'Neal and Sunshine overate together and ended up obese and applying for Season 9. Take a look at your parenting and be consistent now.

Erik Did It, So Can You. Season 3 champ Erik Chopin gained nearly all his weight back, then lost a ton after Bob invited him back for a Season 9 finale appearance. He didn't get a chance to step on the scale, but after waving to the crowd, it's obvious he lost a load of weight through healthy eating and all those boxing workouts. Who cares how many times you've lost and re-gained? Dig in and try again.

"The Biggest Loser" is over for the summer, but Jillian Michaels is just getting started. Tune in to her new show, "Losing It With Jillian" tonight on NBC, 10/9C, then check-in with That's Fit on Wednesday mornings for a recap on the best tips from each episode.

The Season 9 live finale at "The Biggest Loser" couldn't come fast enough for contestants eating fish and veggies for weeks following killer at-home workouts. After Ashley and Michael locked in their shot at the $250,000 crown, America voted Daris over Koli for the third spot. America forgave Daris's late-night eating habits, prompting a dejected, super thin Koli to jockey for the at-home $100,000. After announcing the winners, let's see how many pounds Subway's 1,000-per-pound marketing dream, Shay Sorrells, lost.

Winner Drops 50 Percent. Starting the show at a heaviest-ever 526 pounds, Chicagoan Michael Venrella, 30, won the $250,000 after dropping a total of 264 pounds for a 50.19 percent weight loss. Ashley Johnston wasn't far behind at 48.93 percent, narrowly beating Daris George's 48.55 percent loss. Michael now weighs 262 pounds and is literally half the man he used to be.

Popularity Pays Off. Being popular is critical for a shot at "The Biggest Loser" grand prize. Look at Koli Palu. He won the $100,000 at-home prize with an incredible 53.34 percent loss, weighing-in at 188 pounds from an original 403. But if he was better liked by America, that top percentage could have won him the $250,000. Future Season 10 contestants take notice -- America voted for low-key Daris over cockier Koli. Or maybe many could identify with Daris's late-night eating habits as he ferociously trained for that 4:02 marathon finish.

The Subway Guy's Challenge to Shay. Subway's dual marketers, Jared Fogle and Shay Sorrells, met live on stage at the finale. Season 8 contestant and heaviest woman ever, Shay was invited to weigh-in again at the Season 9 finale. Subway promised her $1,000 for every additional pound lost since Season 8. Originally weighing 476, Shay is a significantly thinner 252 pounds and $52,000 richer. Although many of us are sick of the rampant product placement on the show, don't expect it to end. As Jared held the check he presented her with another Subway challenge. Train and run a marathon with Jared, and the sandwich king will double Shay's money. Cool twist for a worthy woman who's lost 224 pounds in months, not years. We have to respect Jared -- he looks slimmer since his last reported relapse around the middle.

At-Home Notables. Five contestants lost over 40 percent of their body weight. Considered possibly the sickest man on campus by Dr. Huizenga, Darrell lost a fourth-place 45.76 percent and now weighs 224 pounds. Sherry was close behind at 45.41 percent, while Sunshine, O'Neal and Michael's Mom, Maria, all lost over 40 percent. If you're thinking that's impossible without "The Biggest Loser," Cherita lost 32.85 percent after being on the ranch only a few hours. She did it at home and so can you.

Erik Chopin is Thin Again. Boxing workouts and slimmer eating works. Erik Chopin, the Season 3 champ who'd gained most of the weight back, has shaken his obesity once again. He didn't jump on the Season 9 finale scale as expected (live TV time crunch?), but he was offered a second to stand up, wave to the crowd and show off a much thinner bod. Good for Erik. Now let's hope his yo-yo weight is history.

Bob Dodges Melissa. Still denying that she ever threw a weigh-in to a doubting Bob and Jillian, a 143-pound, muscular Melissa shouted out to Bob on live TV, "Do you believe me now?" Bob deflected the barb by acknowledging her fantastic 90 pounds lost. Notice he didn't answer the question. Of course she didn't ask Jillian.

Skipping O'Neal. After watching a formerly crippled O'Neal skip down the stairs onto the stage, Alison Sweeney couldn't hold back her declaration that O'Neal was her absolute favorite contestant. He now weighs 230 pounds and looks incredibly fit. As always, his happy, humble and kind demeanor shines.

Unforgettable Trainer Memories.

Jillian shared she'll never forget teaching Maria to overcome her fear of swimming. This was Jillian at her best.

"It has to be O'Neal," said Bob. He wanted O'Neal to gain control of his body and walk, not hobble, up the stairs to a weigh-in. O'Neal did it. Now the cadence of his gait matches his carefree personality.

Michael deserved to win, and with the highest percentage of weight lost overall, Koli earned the $100,000. With the exception of a few heated moments, Season 9 contestants will be remembered for spending more time losing weight than losing sleep over gameplay. Now the fun is over until Season 10, but time with Jillian is just kicking off.

See you next week as That's Fit covers the new show, "Losing It With Jillian," every Wednesday morning following her Tuesday show at 10/9C on NBC. Who will lose it the most -- contestant waistlines or Jillian's temper? The short-fused trainer only has a week to overhaul the habits of each overweight family.

Week 18 at "The Biggest Loser" encompassed the final four's 30-day grind back home before returning to run a full marathon and weigh-in for the top two slots at the May 25 live finale awarding $250,000. The third finalist is up for grabs in a nationwide vote. Former at-home eating and drinking habits had everyone on edge this episode -- enough to drive Koli out of town and Daris into late night snacking self-sabotage. Let's see who handled the pressure and kept losing.

$10,000 Marathon. Alison promised $10,000 to a charity of choice for any contestant who jogged, walked or crawled across the marathon finish line. Fans were shocked that producers tossed in a marathon challenge back in Season 7, but here we sit in Season 9 feeling confident. Running a marathon after being morbidly obese just weeks before is no big deal, right? This is the magic of "The Biggest Loser" -- if contestants can jog it, you can start changing your habits to lose it. Set those 26.2 excuses aside and get moving and eating toward your goal.

At-Home Highs and Lows. Michael reunited with his Chicago Italian family and taught them how to make lean turkey meatballs for family pasta nights. Frying and bread crumbs were replaced by chickpeas and baking. Ashley decided her wild drinking days were behind her. Koli couldn't stand all the at-home attention, so he fled to a mixed martial arts training studio in Las Vegas. Koli's workouts were awesome, but hanging out with a group of martial art junkies digging into nightly pizza as he ate fish and veggies was unnerving. Bob was concerned Koli was too focused on winning instead of folding his healthy habits into real life.

Curtis Stone's Rib Joint Makeover. Instead of winning a kitchen house call in Week 17, Daris ended up scoring a visit by chef Curtis Stone to his favorite rib joint. Curtis added four new dishes on the restaurant's menu and invited Daris's family and friends out to dinner. Dishes included spicy black bean soup (160 calories); smoked trout dip (240 calories); green bean salad for a light 90 calories; and chipotle grilled pork tenderloin (300 calories). Trout dip at a rib joint? But healthy eating by day didn't help, Daris doubled up on calories during one late night kitchen binge, then said, "I'm so full I want to throw up." Daris shows us why the road to morbid obesity can be as complicated and baffling as any addiction.

"When you feel you're being pushed to the limits by your trainer, take out your healthy rage on the equipment, not us," said Jillian. Fair enough. Or you can always ask them to step into the boxing ring. Has anyone ever fired a trainer for being too tough?

Marathon Record and a Sione Surprise. Late night snacking didn't hurt Daris's marathon time. He shattered Season 7 Tara's 4:55 record with a 4:02 finish, even with a sore knee. Koli finished at 6:08 after failing to run for more than 30 seconds a few months before. Michael and Ashley finished together at 6:26. Former contestants Sione Fa, Mike Morelli, Ali Vincent and Matt Hoover jogged along at key milestones to keep the final four motivated. Ali and Mike look slim; we already know Matt has gained significant weight back (check out the photos), however the real surprise was Sione. Maybe it was the cameras, but Sione appeared to have put on several pounds since his Season 7 departure, proving that maintenance is tricky.

At the final weigh-in, Ashley went from 231 pounds to 213 for an 18 pound loss (7.79 percent). Michael dropped 23 to land at 299 (7.14 percent), the first time he's broken 300 pounds in a long time. Both percentages were good enough for the top two spots. Koli's martial arts infusion delivered a lesser 5.63 percent weight loss, and Daris's late night snacking resulted in a depressing two pound gain followed by a tongue lashing from Jillian.

After Daris explained his weight gain away to focusing on marathon training, not weight loss, Jillian retorted, "You clearly sabotaged yourself. This is make or break time. This is where you either get real about what happened and why it happened, or you can go into denial." Poor Daris. Now it's your chance to vote for the third finalist for the May 25 finale. It's not who needs the ranch more at this point ... or is it?

See you next week. Don't forget to text, click or phone in your vote for either Koli or Daris by 12:00 pm ET on May 24. Then get ready for the May 25 live finale by tossing out the sugar and burning away the fat with Bob Harper's new Inside Out Method DVDs.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Biggest Loser: Helen and Erik Return

Week 17 at "The Biggest Loser" saw the final five contestants race to stay above the red line to land in the final four. But instead of focusing on the confetti-laced $250,000 grand prize, this week's message centered on living a leaner life once the ranch is a fuzzy memory. With only two episodes remaining, contestant worry about the future was top of mind. Luckily two former champs, Helen Phillips and Erik Chopin, returned to dish out a little post-ranch survival advice. For all "The Biggest Loser" at-home fans attempting to balance smart eating with consistent fitness most every day -- this episode is for you.

Red-Line Pressure Cooker. Forget alliances and politicking at elimination, the red line was back to level the playing field. Lose the lowest percentage of weight loss and head on home. Koli announced his intention to win, but did he back it up?

Past Champs Return. In a cool producer move, former champs Helen (Season 7) and Erik (Season 3) met with contestants to provide perspective. Helen has lost her skeletal look; now she simply looks fantastic, in shape and happy. While Erik gained nearly all his weight back, he was invited to weigh-in again at the Season 9 finale and is down 70 pounds to around 300. Let's hope he lost those pounds for him and not the Biggest Loser limelight. You're the only one who can lose weight and keep it off.

Former Champs Know. It's not a finish line, it's a lifetime. At least that's the message Erik shared with finale-frenzied Koli. He warned the group to avoid giving themselves a pass if 10 or 15 pounds creep back on. That's a red flag for weight gain, especially when it's justified by the ranch belief that weight can be lost quickly. Suddenly, those passes turn into weight relapse. In another heart to heart, Helen told Sunshine that she worked out way too intensely upon her return home. It took her time to realize eating right coupled with an hour or so in the gym each day was maintenance enough. Michael requested to chat with both Erik and Helen. Michael's finish line feels forever away, but Helen and Erik affirmed he's capable of living that healthy lifestyle if he stays positive.

Michael's Meltdown. He may have lost nearly 200 pounds, but Michael became unglued upon comparing his weight to other remaining contestants. The trip to the Big and Tall clothing shop during makeover week didn't help, either. But Bob pulled out his emotional glue stick and focused Michael's energy on the task at hand -- losing weight one day at a time. Find that Bob-kind-of-person in your own life next time your weight-loss goal has you slamming doors as you quit the gym.

Fan Favorite Challenge. Producers brought back this sandy fan favorite. Contestants traipsed over a series of sand hills to dump their 16 weeks of corresponding weight loss along 15 drop spots and then down a last, steep hill. Winner scored $10,000. Daris won this one easily and shattered Season 7 Tara's time by 10 minutes. But he chose to skip the $10,000 in return for a one pound advantage at the weigh-in. Should Daris have taken the $10,000 like Tara did?

Romo Jog. Dallas Cowboys' Tony Romo took a jog with contestants, reminding them to lean on inspiring people at home. Or at least friends who support your choice for a healthy grilled chicken salad during dinner out, right? Stick with people who care about your fitness and health.

Don't-Miss-Trainer-Gems

Bob says Subway is the only fast food joint he'd visit. Now Subway has a Build Your Better Breakfast deal, so the final five dug into an English muffin and egg whites for just 124 calories before stacking on low-cal veggies of choice. No doubt, Subway fare is working for Season 8's Shay. Just remember eating at home is almost always the healthiest option.

"Potassium is essential for proper muscle contraction during exercise," said Jillian. Bananas are a great source of potassium and energy. If you don't like them plain, consider freezing and tossing in your next smoothie.

Risk of Stroke Nearly Gone. In just 17 weeks, Dr. Huizenga reported that 31-year-old Michael's risk of stroke dropped from 15 percent to 1 percent per The Biggest Loser Know Your Number Health Score. Michael still weighs over 300 pounds, but his health gains after shedding nearly 200 pounds are life-saving.

Koli backed up his opening attitude by dropping 13 pounds for a 5.33 percent weight loss. Daris topped that with a 5.37 percent loss and looked amazingly slim at 195 pounds. As this week's top loser, Daris scored an at-home kitchen call by chef Curtis Stone. Michael lost a record 204 pounds in 17 weeks after losing 12 for a 3.59 percent loss. Those big numbers had Ashley and Sunshine shaken, with Ashley losing seven pounds (2.94 percent) to Sunshine's dismal 1.12 percent, or two pounds.

Sunshine headed home graciously to her local high school packed with cheering family and friends. Since the ranch, she's lost 14 more pounds and tossed out the opening pitch at a Minnesota Twins game after a healthy tailgate with grilled turkey burgers, asparagus, fruit and bean salad. Sunshine left fans with valuable advice: "Every day you have to appreciate the small victory. If you fall, that's OK, get back up and do it again." See you next week as the final four head home for 30 days and one returns two pounds heavier and Jillian claimed it's self-sabotage.

Fashion police high-fived as Michael and Daris sank into celebrity stylist Jonathan Antin's chair. But off-the-rack outfits and sharp haircuts don't trigger weight loss nearly as well as climbing a Jacob's Ladder. No electrical outlets needed, yet this machine still costs over $3,000. Hop on for the makeover scoop, a valuable treadmill tip and which contestant headed home to round out the final five.

Shopping Spree. To kick off their 805-pound combined weight loss to date, contestants couldn't wait to shop in a regular clothing store. Sam went from a 6X to large. Daris slid into a pair of jeans that didn't come from a farm supply store. Even though Michael is 183 pounds lighter, because he started at 526 pounds, he still had to take a solo visit to the Big and Tall shop. Daris had one of the most dramatic makeovers in Biggest Loser history, while Michael's weight loss triggered a wave of emotions in his obese sister, RoseAngela. Maybe producers will send her to the Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge like Season 7's Max.

Climb the Fitness Ladder. If you want to lose weight, spend over two hours on a Jacob's Ladder. Playing for a one pound advantage at weigh-in, Koli outlasted Daris in a Jacob's Ladder scramble suspended over the swimming pool. He then followed up the win with a weight loss of more than 6 percent. Ashley fell off first for a one pound disadvantage. In all fairness, she has significant weight left to lose.

Build Up Your Weakness. Daris mentally gave up on the ladder challenge, which prompted Bob to ramp up his workout to raise his confidence. If you're not feeling mentally tough, try increasing the intensity of your fitness regimen -- mind and body are connected.

Did you know grabbing the treadmill rails jeopardizes fat burn by 20 to 30 percent? Jillian says if you're hanging on the treadmill, try slowing down and performing one-minute intervals at a high speed instead.

With the finale nearing, Koli lost an amazing 15 pounds to land at 244. Daris dropped nine. Ashley's 10-pound loss put her in the Biggest Loser record books with the most weight lost by a woman on campus (136 pounds). Considering Sam is the first-ever contestant to reach his goal weight on campus, his understandably modest loss of two pounds put him under the yellow line with Michael. Alliances held true with a split vote between Koli/Sunshine for Sam versus Ashley/Daris keeping Michael. Lowest percentage of weight loss sent Sam back home to family and a reunion with his Season 9 ranch romance, Stephanie. Sam and Stephanie live together in Los Angeles with their kettlebells and the beach.

See you next week for the finale five frenzy as Michael stresses out with serious weight left to lose.

The treadmill is the cardio star on "The Biggest Loser" -- why not the elliptical?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Biggest Loser: A Fat Future for Texas

Week 15 at "The Biggest Loser" has Mississippi smiling -- for once the obesity conversation wasn't about them. The final seven contestants jetted to Texas to inspire more fitness and less barbecue. Read on for a couple scary Texas obesity statistics and a 5K counter punch.

Texas Shame. Alison Sweeney said that, according to Men's Health Magazine, Texas is home to five of the 10 fattest cities in the U.S. Not such a great stat for a state that prides itself on geographical size. Even worse, it's predicted that in 35 years, 75 percent of Texans will be overweight or obese.

Best Cottonbowl Ever: Contestants visited Texas radio stations to drum up walkers and runners for a 5K at the Cottonbowl. Who cares if you've never run a 5K and your brother got married yesterday? All were invited and dozens of people showed up. There was seriously obese Jeff, who has lost a lot of weight already on his own and finished in just over 52:00. Deborah joined in to break the cycle of obesity in her family. It may have taken C.J. over two hours to finish, but amidst tears she shared, "I can't even walk through WalMart, I have to take a cart, and I just walked a 5K!" Since Biggest Loser came to town, Jeff and C.J. have lost 10 pounds each and Deborah has shed 21.

Little Goals, New Reality. High school teacher and Season 8 contestant Abby Rike met Jillian at the door of Mabank High School for a pep fitness rally. One obese high school student had the guts to speak up and explain that she's always been told she'll never be skinny and never be who she wants to be. Jillian gave her some private time and explained that happiness comes with the achievement of little goals. It's the tiny steps over time that deliver a different reality. Whether you've got five, 20 or 100-plus pounds to lose, taking those first small steps is a Biggest Loser mantra.

Lose Fat, Score Legs. Anyone else notice Daris's defined quads and calves as he ran up and down those hotel stairs? Losing all that weight has revealed a handsome set of legs. No more watching his buddies and their girlfriends, Daris is going to enter the dating game fast with his kind heart and sleeker physique. Those legs also delivered a personal best 21:04 in the 5K.

Wrangling for Immunity. Gameplay is on as Sam helped Koli corral the most small cows for immunity. If only Michael had helped Daris earlier -- the Michael/Daris/Ashley alliance is looking shaky. O'Neal risked it all diving for hooves and somehow he didn't shatter any bones on the soft dirt floor. Alison Sweeney gets the nod for the sharpest cowboy hat.

If you need to lose five pounds, Bob said it's time to micromanage calories. Watch every single calorie and before you know it the body will let go of those stubborn last pounds. There are plenty of Americans out there teetering just beneath the overweight category, wishing they had their college legs or waistlines. You can do it, but it will take careful eating and copious fitness.

Air travel and dieting don't get along. Bob advised you skip the airplane food (high fat/sodium) and pack your own healthy meals/snacks. Then hydrate, hydrate, hydrate without mile-high soda or alcoholic drinks.

Koli may have guzzled water before the weigh-in as he only lost a pound huddled beneath the immunity shield. Sam shed a respectable six to land at 240 pounds. Sunshine and O'Neal's family funeral likely slowed their weight loss, they fell below the yellow line after losing only nine pounds together. Travel and Texas agreed with Michael -- he dropped a shocking 15 pounds to weigh-in at 343, while Daris and Ashley lost just enough. Michael said he's lost the equivalent of an adult man (183 pounds) and now has an adult woman left to lose.

Of course, O'Neal requested elimination to save Sunshine, which leaves yellow/gray equal in numbers to the Ashley/Daris/Michael squad. Happy as ever, O'Neal is off all medication, weighs 250 pounds, zips up and down stairs and ties his own shoes. His wife can wrap her arms around him on the motorcycle. No doubt O'Neal's character and personality will help underwrite his dream of creating a foundation to combat childhood obesity someday.

See you next week for Makeover Week and a few Texas-sized haircuts for Michael and Daris. If you're wondering what Shay is up to these days, That's Fit recently caught up with her and learned about her intense post-ranch workout schedule.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Biggest Loser Recap: Buffet Temptation

Week 14 at "The Biggest Loser" cast the spotlight on the buffet. One contestant had the chance to control elimination if they hung out at the buffet long enough. When you're hungry, burning thousands of calories a day in the gym and haven't seen a piece of chocolate cake in weeks, an unlimited fat and sugar spread is irresistible. Or is it? Read on as Sam gets even skinnier and one contestant can't turn away from the taquitos.

Buffet Time. Buffets are a dieter's nightmare -- you pay a handful of dollars for never-ending food. In an interesting surprise, Week 14 opened with a buffet temptation. With the ranch kitchen suddenly off limits, contestants were forced to eat their meals alone at a buffet stocked with healthy and unhealthy choices. Whoever consumed the most calories at the end of the day had the only vote at elimination, provided they remained above the yellow line. Ashley bit into a taquito during a weak moment, but Koli went for the power with a 4,164-calorie buffet fest. He claimed it was an attempt to save Sam at elimination, but maybe it was the bacon. Jillian and Bob were not impressed, but they kept their anger on simmer.

You're Never Over It. O'Neal described the buffet temptation perfectly. "You're never really over the things that got you here," he said. Whether you've lost 10 or 100 pounds, high-calorie foods and poor exercise habits beckon. O'Neal is right, and anyone who's lost weight only to see it return gets it too. Hang in there with those healthy choices, you're not alone.

Diabetes Gone. Ashley checked in with Dr. Huizenga and discovered her diabetes is gone. Michael shaved 12 years off his Know Your Numbers age, and his risk for heart attack, diabetes or stroke plummeted from 84 percent at the premiere to 31 percent today. Keep in mind, he still weighs over 300 pounds. Losing weight is a win-win -- as those numbers dial down on the scale, so does the risk for obesity-related health problems.

Daris Wins One. The slimmer guy in orange built his tower the fastest to reach a flag overhead. Daris isn't flying unnoticed anymore, he's nearly back to his 7th grade weight and scored himself a pound advantage at the weigh-in. O'Neal took a nasty fall, landed in the hospital with an injured knee and a pound disadvantage to boot.

Side Out With Gabrielle. Contestants headed to the beach to meet a sleek Gabrielle Reece -- an actress, model and pro volleyball star. No weight room needed for this beach workout, sprinting between circuits on the beach was rough enough.

Don't Miss Trainer Gems

Yoplait has entered the Greek yogurt craze with their new 100-calorie cup of Yoplait Greek boasting 14 grams of protein and zero fat. Greek yogurt has a strong taste, especially if fruit-on-the-bottom is the usual. Yet Bob had Ashley dipping in her spoon and she loved it. Stoneyfield's Oikos is another option that tastes great without the fat.

Add a few thinking reps to your workout, said Bob. Stand on one foot atop an overturned BOSU, as a gym partner tosses you a tennis ball and peppers you with questions about your career or current events. Beyond the leg and core training, you're working reaction time and hand/eye coordination.

Koli's visit to the buffet did not cost him at the weigh-in. He sweated off 10 pounds this week to Sam's above-the-yellow six pound loss. No family save needed. Injured O'Neal lost eight pounds even as he grieved the death of his brother. Daris lost seven more pounds, but Victoria and Sunshine could only shake one pound each. Koli lifted his power platter vote to reveal Victoria, then advised her to pick it up at home if she wants success. The Koli, Sam and O'Neal alliance is strong, no way was Sunshine heading home. Victoria is now down to a size 12 and boxing her way skinny. Mom Cherita has lost 77 pounds, and she never spent a night at the ranch.

See you next week as "The Biggest Loser" final seven help Texas get fit. Yes, the amazing Abby Rike will be there.

Contestants had a chance to win cars, financial guru Suze Orman was back and Season 8 winner, Danny Cahill, delivered a little inspiration before getting a smack down in the gym. Yet this week focused more on the mind than the body. Losing weight is a mental game, meaning your financial and emotional health are a part of the equation.

Suze Says. Whether she's paid to appear or not, Orman loves to dish out advice on "The Biggest Loser." After analyzing contestants' financial health last season, she correctly predicted confetti would float down on Danny. Now she's tapped Sunshine to take it all in Season 9. It might have been Koli, but he surprisingly admitted he's not counting calories at meal times. Looks like Michael's debt is as out of control as his previous eating habits. As only Orman can, she boldly reminded everyone health and wealth are intertwined. Maybe those sprint intervals do chip away at both your waistline and your debt. Losing weight may very well mean financial gain.

Turn the Keys. In a brutal challenge in the wind and rain, contestants ripped off car keys one by one from a line holding a giant balloon, then ran back to a pair of Mazda3's. If their key turned the ignition, they scored a car. Drea and O'Neal won, then O'Neal promptly handed his car over to daughter Sunshine.

Drea and Michael's Moment. Losing weight is changing Drea's attitude. Not only has she realized she's worth it, she is now going to work as if she is worth it. Are you dedicating enough time to fitness and healthy eating to back up your personal goals? Michael also had his moment in the gym this week. After running a continuous mile for the first time, Bob upped the ante until Michael had finished a five mile run instead. Consider increasing your mileage this month, but there's no sense in getting hurt -- do it more gradually than an abrupt 500 percent gain in a single workout. Remember the 10 percent rule.

"Stay in shape at work," Bob said. Try floating an office version of the "Biggest Loser" next time you're hydrating at the water cooler before that jog over lunch. Considering one-third of your life or more is spent at work, a diet and exercise contest at work can be an effective daily motivator.

"Try walk-backs sprints," said Jillian. Don't have a treadmill? Head outside, sprint 50 yards, then walk back and repeat. If you repeat that 35 times, you'll rival the number of sprints Victoria had to suffer through during Jillian's mental/emotional treatment sessions at the gym this week.

With only nine contestants stepping on the scale, weigh-ins are speeding up. Daris was the big loser this week, dropping seven pounds, or 3 percent of himself. Michael, Ashley and Koli all lost over two percent. But Drea only shed three pounds and a sinewy Sam saw a big zero on the scale. At elimination, Drea didn't stand a chance against Sam's popularity and work ethic at the ranch. She headed back to Michigan with much more than a new car. Motivated to stay healthy forever, Drea is now a spin instructor and working to become a certified personal trainer focusing on the fitness of special needs children. We bet she'll look fantastic by the finale. See you next week as contestants face a temptation food fest for control of the elimination vote and O'Neal sadly loses his brother, followed by a nasty fall.

Now the term "obesity" may be banned by city officials in Liverpool, England. Do you agree? In a crazy race to lose 2 percent of their body weight first, contestants hung out at the gym late into the night. That red button tripped a piercing siren that only sounded twice in four days. Who failed and who won? In the end, it was the most unpopular fish in the pool who suffered the worst penalty -- one extra pound at final weigh-in.

Race for 2 Percent. This challenge wasn't about milk. For immunity, contestants raced to lose two percent of their body weight the fastest. But the controversial show set out to minimize risk as Dr. Huizenga visited the ranch with a clear warning -- intense workouts without proper fuel and hydration is potentially lethal. Contestants were advised against irresponsible behavior resulting in lost muscle, bone, water and critical electrolytes. You need a safe and moderate intake of calories to provide enough fuel to kindle fat-burning workouts. Remember, you can drop weight dangerously fast to fit into that party dress or avoid the problem entirely through responsible fat loss via diet and exercise. Trade in your yo-yo scale for consistently healthy behavior forever.

Ten Pounds in Four Days. Sounds like an infomercial, but that's exactly what Sam pulled off after sounding the weigh-in siren. After Victoria failed on day two, the muscle-bound Sam shattered his six-pound goal by shedding 10 pounds in a mere four days. He also scored immunity.

50 Dives for a Prize. Yet Sam couldn't beat Sunshine when it came to the swimming challenge for a two-week stay at The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge. Sunshine sliced back and forth through the pool to deliver her 100 weights from the deep end to deck first. Whoever finished had the option to help others dive for their weights. The extra one pound penalty teetered between Michael and Melissa, but no one dove for the queen of game play, Melissa.

Why Are You Trying to Lose? Bob has said in the past that game players get fat again. Lose weight for yourself, not the weight-loss challenge for cash at the office. Motivation is great, but internal drive has the last word. Jillian's latest quote in the gym said it all: "You need to find your OWN purpose. I cannot BUILD desire."

Don't Miss Trainer Gems.

"Don't eat a big evening meal," said Bob. Skipping meals during the day can mean overeating at night -- and those unused calories can make a nightly fat deposit. Calories in the morning have a better chance of being burned off.
Mix up your daily calories to prevent survival mode metabolism. Jillian advises eating strictly two days, moderately three days, then slack a bit on the weekends. Those splurges will help you adhere to those low-cal days and keep your metabolism dazed, confused and humming.

Sunshine's Moment. Sunshine's killer one-on-one time with Jillian in the gym was followed by a soul chat cooldown. Jillian said it was time for Sunshine to become more independent and rely less upon her father, O'Neal. She warned that their enmeshed relationship played a role in their morbid obesity. A joyous, tearful O'Neal was thrilled Sunshine is now ready to embrace life on her own terms.

Positive emotions do promote weight loss. Sunshine lost an amazing seven pounds (3.47 percent), while O'Neal dropped eight. A bummed out Daris only shed four, but avoided the elimination room after Drea lost only two and Melissa lost only three. No one bought Melissa's argument to keep her in the game since she's less of a threat. The first five votes sent her packing back to Lance and family in Texas. In celebration of her 40th birthday, Melissa and Lance ran a half-marathon, and a full marathon is next. Will Melissa win the at-home $100,000? See you next week, when still-skinny Season 8 champ Danny Cahill makes a visit while Jillian is tossed in the mud.

The show opened with a live teaser highlighting Wayne, an at-home fan who lost hundreds of pounds with help from "The Biggest Loser." But Wayne didn't step on the scale until the end of the show. Instead, eliminated contestants jumped on the scale in hopes of a return spot at the ranch. But percentage of weight loss did not win this one -- two second chance spots were determined by popular vote and a 1,000-step challenge.

At-Home Fan Loses 418. About two years ago, Wayne sat in a wheelchair thanks to morbid obesity. But after being inspired by the show, he lost 418 pounds to weigh-in live last night at 256. His secret weapon? Walking and, obviously, an improved diet. This isn't the last time we'll see Wayne -- Allison awarded him a visit to The Biggest Loser Resort at Fitness Ridge and the Season 9 finale.

A Second Chance Election. The nine remaining contestants were met with multiple surprises. Not only is the game back to singles, but a popular vote determined which eliminated player would return to the ranch. Mama Sherry scored the highest percentage of weight loss (28.44 percent) and looks great at 156 pounds, but the vote came down to John (17.56 percent) or Victoria (20.39 percent). Remember, Victoria was on the mother/daughter Blue team that departed the ranch early and lost a chance to return to O'Neal and Sunshine. Michael's vote for Victoria broke the tie, shaking up Ashley/Sam/Koli's block of votes for John.

A Second Chance Challenge. When Allison announced that a 1,000-step challenge would determine the second returning player, Melissa and Miggy perked up. A fit-looking Melissa won this grueling event after Miggy's asthma flared up. Contestant count is back up to a worried 11 as both Melissa and Victoria were granted immunity their return week. Never, ever take your spot for granted on the ranch.

Freeze Portions Ahead. More of a product placement for Ziploc freezer bags than a trainer tip, Bob advised Victoria to measure, then freeze a week's worth of portion sizes to eat right. Don't just toss those leftovers in the fridge, but take the time to divvy up reasonable portion sizes, then freeze for an easy grab 'n go on hectic weekdays.

Girl Drama. Koli stirred up Ashley and Stephanie's friendship by suggesting Stephanie may have thrown a previous weigh-in. She lost two pounds the week Ashley's mom was sent home, then an impressive nine pounds one week later. Ashley sobbed with doubt, and Stephanie was left scared and crying. Two returning players and a girl-alliance gone bad? Must have been a full moon.

After a blow-out last chance workout, Victoria and Melissa dropped only six pounds combined. Lucky immunity for them. Thanks to Bob's training, O'Neal glided instead of hobbled up the stairs to lose another four pounds. Steady Daris lost an impressive seven pounds to Sunshine's six. Stephanie lost only one pound and a plane ticket home. Seven weeks later, she's down 96 pounds, wears a size 12 and is in love. See you next week as Melissa's got her game face on and the physical strength to back it up.

Major League Baseball's opening day is nearing -- here's one way to lose weight watching baseball from home.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Biggest Loser: Cupcakes and Marathons

Week 10 at "The Biggest Loser" sent contestants home for a flattering reunion with family and friends. But a box of temptation cupcakes broke up the weight-loss party in anticipation of a marathon ahead. At-home beers and burgers didn't stand a chance against Daris's sweet karaoke date night. However, overcoming past bad habits without a trainer in sight was the real story this week.

$10,000 Marathon Pedal. After the welcome home cheers subsided, contestants had to pry open a giant packing crate filled with packing peanuts, a box of 100-calorie cupcakes and a stationary bike. First one to finish 26.2 miles on the bike during a same-time challenge won $10,000. Eat a cupcake and tack on five minutes to the contestant's race time of your choice. In a Bob and Jillian head-shaking moment, 32 cupcakes were wolfed down, and they weren't all for sinewy Sam.

Cupcake Spoilers. Gameplaying Lance ate 17 cupcakes with his eliminated wife, Melissa, by his side. Andrea scarfed nine to Michael's six. No one else touched one. At the bicycle marathon, Sam beat Koli and Lance by less than a minute, but all the pre-race cupcakes eaten by Lance pushed him into nearly last place. Koli narrowly beat a cupcake-filled Lance for the $10,000 and a big boost in pride.

Choose Life. Michael's mother reminded him to choose life, even as his grandmother sits unresponsive in a hospital bed from complications of extreme obesity. Mom knows avoiding a wheelchair, dialysis and diabetes later involves making the right choices now. Looks as if Michael truly has the support he needs at home -- at 397 pounds he's facing a long road to a reasonable weight. Ever an optimist, Bob was overjoyed to see Michael proactively manage high stress levels with healthy living, not overeating.

Thin Tastes Better. At least that's how Ashley felt as she down and ordered at her favorite restaurant. No more chicken wings with ranch. Instead she chose ahi tuna and steamed spinach. When it comes to giant restaurant meals, "it doesn't taste as good as I feel right now," said Ashley. Ashley and her mom now believe an active social life means kayaking and hiking, not mountains of nachos with friends and family. That's not a change in taste, it's an entirely new mindset.

More Tips. Where were the specific trainer tips this week? Granted, players headed home, but viewers need concrete eating and fitness ideas to employ, too. We missed Bob and Jillian's big ideas this week, and they didn't even yell at the cupcake eaters.

Black's losing streak ended with incredible at-home weight loss -- Sam lost 14 pounds to land at his eighth grade weight of 264. Ashley lost a first-ever 10 pounds and Stephanie lost nine to break the 200s. Blue headed to elimination with Sunshine holding immunity after losing the team's highest percentage of weight loss. An obvious gameplay move, Lance was sent back to Texas. He's now down to 265 pounds, hiking with his son and realizing what he eats matters. "The education is so empowering for me. I used to never think about the food I was sticking in my mouth," said Lance. He may make 220 by the finale. See you next week as eliminated players return for a spot, and one man reveals a 400-pound weight loss after being inspired by the show.

This time around contestants had a chance to cook for the master chef himself. But there were only 10 roaming around the kitchen; Michael had a family emergency back home. Tricky nutrition trivia delivered a memorable reward, while commando crawls rubbed the skin off Daris's elbows. With many approaching 100 pounds lost to date, the gym is hopping, and Sam is busting up the boxing equipment.

Food Trivia Time. The first team to answer three questions correctly won a day away at the Four Seasons hotel complete with luxury spa treatments and a healthy dinner. Let's see how you do. Here are some of the questions, answers follow. How many calories does a one ounce serving of avocado have (50, 60 or 70)? Which of the following is a source of omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, peanuts or blueberries)? Which grain promotes blood pressure control (brown rice, flax seed, whole wheat pasta, none of the above). Answers are 50, salmon and none of the above. Check out the poll for the last question.

Blue Spa Day. Blue team barely beat Black for a day at the Four Seasons. Luckily the menu had a healthy section, so no 15,000-calorie binge, tequila shots or smokes away from the ranch like Season 7. Black stayed back to clean the kitchen and mop up the gym. Let's see if Blue eating calories versus Black shedding them makes a difference at the weigh-in.

Curtis Stone Cooking Challenge. After Blue and Black switched off picks for 12 ingredients, they had 30 minutes to prepare an appetizer, entree and dessert to fulfill Curtis's judging criteria for great taste and outstanding nutrition. How many Americans just toss in a Lean Cuisine instead? Blue's spinach/feta/pomegranate salad had too many calories compared to Black's shrimp with red bell peppers, onion, lemon and chives. But Blue fought back and won the entree tasting with a 297-calorie seared pork tenderloin and cauliflower, less than Black's 557-calorie salmon with wild rice and broccoli. Black's big mistake? They left the salmon skin on. Luckily Black's caramelized pears with goat cheese and strawberry drizzle swept the dessert and the match. They won a major prize -- a five-pound advantage at the weigh-in.

Don't Miss Trainer Gems
If you sit at a desk job five days a week, Bob said you're not burning enough calories. Bring a resistance band to work for bicep curls or tricep extensions. Then engage your core by ditching your office chair for a stability ball chair instead.
Black may have walked into the weigh-in with a five-pound advantage, but Sherry and Stephanie's three and two pound losses seriously hurt their chance to beat the big guys and Sunshine. Nobody dropped less than eight pounds for Blue, and even though Michael was away visiting his sick grandmother, he fit in two workouts a day, lost 11 pounds and has broken into the 300s weighing 397. Michael showed us all that fitness and healthy eating work during sad and stressful times in life, too. A dejected Black faced the elimination room once again. The youth alliance stood strong -- this time Mama Sherry headed home. But you should see her now, paddling a kayak in a hot pink and black outfit at a healthy 138 pounds. She looks absolutely fantastic, bubbling with energy and looking years younger. Perhaps she'll surprise everyone and rake in that $100,000 like 64-year-old Jerry from Season 7. He won after losing 47.97 percent. At that rate, Sherry would have to weigh about 113 pounds at the finale since she started at 218.
