Will You Follow the New USDA Dietary Guidelines?

The United States Department of Agriculture released its 2010 Dietary Guidelines on Monday. For the most part, we need to eat more fruits, veggies and whole grains -- which is not surprising. The one difference about this year's guidelines is its focus on the overweight and obesity epidemic that is plaguing our nation.

The main suggestions are to eat less sodium, saturated fat and processed foods. Because the USDA comes out with new guidelines every five years (the first year was 1980), many people actually take the updates with a grain of salt.

As studies have shown that Americans rarely even follow the USDA dietary guidelines, we asked our readers if the new Food Pyramid would affect how they and their families eat.

l hope to. Yes it will have some impact on what we eat; we don't eat NEARLY enough fresh fruit and veg.

Is that something new? I thought that was common knowledge already.... Duh!

FINALLY someone is addressing the sodium issue!

Already have. I joined Weight Watchers in March of 2009. Lost 65 pounds. We eat a lot of fresh veggies, whole grain breads, and lean protein.

The more I read, the more I see that low-carb is the way to go. With our sedentary lifestyles, we DO NOT need to be eating 6-11 servings of carbs a day, even if they are whole grains.

I still do NOT understand the obesity problem amongst kids. How is this even possible unless the parents are being irresponsible and not teaching their kids how to eat right....? It's really not difficult to know what is healthy and not healthy. We have way too many free resources available for that to be an excuse.
