"Joy Bauer's Slimdown Workout" DVD Review

You probably know Joy Bauer as the nutrition expert on NBC's "Today," but she's quite active beyond that role. Her newest venture is a fitness DVD: "Joy Bauer's Slimdown Workout."

The DVD consists of two 20-minute cardio strength workouts (the second of which incorporates dumbbells), as well as a five-minute warm-up and a five-minute cooldown. The workouts utilize short intervals and basic choreography to keep things moving quickly.

Bauer knows her stuff -- she is a registered dietitian -- and she's in fantastic shape. In the intro to the DVD, she says she's been teaching people about health and fitness for 20 years, and for the workouts, she's joined by fitness instructor and professional dancer Lisa Wheeler. But is that enough to make this a DVD a worthy addition to your collection?

Who's It For?
This is a good fit for people with zero exercise experience looking to get moving in their own home. And, of course, fans of Bauer will enjoy working out with her.

The workouts are easy to follow and easy to modify. Bauer and Wheeler make a point to show both the easy and more difficult versions of each move.

Dislikes
I found myself wondering why Bauer chose the space she used for the video -- I would have loved to see this staged in more of a studio setting or some place with a bit of color or personality. It felt so barren. And I have to admit that I was annoyed by Bauer's occasional comments about certain moves being so difficult. I mean, come on -- you're a former gymnast (which she mentions in the intro) and in phenomenal shape. Don't try to tell me that balancing on one leg while moving the other is too much for you, especially when most of the moves barely raise my heart rate.

Bottom Line
This workout wasn't a great fit for me, but even though I didn't like everything about it, I'd be quick to recommend it to someone who is a true fitness beginner.
