Marie Claire Writer: Speaking Honestly or Spewing Fat Hatred?
Posted on Nov 3rd 2010 11:00AM by Hilary WalkeFiled Under: Celebs & Entertainment

Recently, a very provocative Marie Claire blogger expressed her feelings about "Mike & Molly," a TV show that follows two obese people falling in love.
"I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other." Maurice Kelly said, " ...because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room."

The reaction to the column itself, especially in a women's magazine that influences young ladies, was quick and furious. When it comes to public expression, should a writer be concerned of who she is offending or simply express how she's feeling?
The debate has reached our audience with intense fervor. Find out how our readers feel about this blogger and her insensitive comments.

She's an idiot....enough said.

The writer should be fired!
Molly M.
She has as much a right to say what she feels as those two do to be fat. Just because there is a lot of obesity these days doesn't mean we should be celebrating it.

Has she ever heard of a remote??? Change the channel if it bothers you so much!!
Lori W.
I think she should lose her job over her comments! They where rude and hurtful. I saw on TV last night that she herself has anorexia you think she would be more understanding.

Fat people are a drain on the health care system.

The writer is a shallow, ignorant fool. The show is a great show about 2 people falling in love who, yes are obese people. So, now you can only have love shown on tv if you are skinny, maybe smoking, drinking or tramping around with a bunch of partners ? God forbid you be fat!
@Susan M. - Would you say the same about the anorexic who is seeking treatment for their problem that developed from their problem with food? Would you say the same about the person with cancer that derived from their behavior or lack of treating their body well. Must be nice to be perfect - oh that's right, you're not. Just like the rest of us. May you never develop a problem that you have a problem control

I think that she expressed a view that many fashion magazines implicitly share, and one that has led to eating disorders for many. And I sort of doubt whether she's a recovering anorexic.

I think her punishment is she has to live life as that kind of person. I wouldn't wish that kind of shallowness on my worst enemy.

Shes very naive in my opinion. with most of the country overweight or obese it makes sense to show people like that on tv. She should take her grossed out feelings and put them to a more productive use if it bothers her so much.

I love the Mike & Molly show. I would fire that writer if she worked for me. If she had commented on their skin color or religion in such a way she'd have been fired how is this different?

If it bothers you, there are 150 channels. Change the channel and shut up..

I'm so tired of people thinking its ok to discriminate against people with weight issues..its like the last acceptable discrimination.
