Feeling Like the Fattest Friend

The scale, however, tried very hard to detour my happiness by displaying 217.6. Thankfully, I can also gauge my progress by the ways my clothes fit, or noticing that I have more energy during the day. It is also very exciting when clothes that previously didn't fit, now button and look good being worn in public.
In regards to clothing items, soon I will be shopping for a bridesmaid's dress for my best friend's wedding. With the new talk of bridesmaids' dresses, I am reminded of an awful event just over a year ago. Last year, I was also invited to be in a dear friend's wedding. I am hesitant to share this story with you, but it is an important part of my journey and it became one of the countless reasons why I am so determined and motivated to reach a healthy, manageable weight.
My husband and I had just moved to Michigan and traveled back to Virginia for my friend's wedding. Long before making the move, I had ordered my dress for the wedding. When I ordered my dress, I knew it wouldn't fit, but thought I could lose the weight to fit into the dress. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The day of her wedding, the dress absolutely would not zip and I could not be part of her wedding party. (Thankfully, my friend and I are, in fact, still very good friends.)
Why am I mentioning this story now? As you can imagine, I was embarrassed, upset and devastated. I felt like the worst -- and fattest -- friend in the world. I am sure we all have one, or many, moments that make us realize that we need to take our health seriously and finally start shedding weight. Over the weekend, the friend getting married in eight months and I were talking about her upcoming wedding and agreed that we both had a long way to go and a looming deadline.
Another challenge last week came as the result of progress. I am finally getting into a rhythm with my workouts. My routine consists of packing my gym clothes with me, taking them to work and then changing into my workout clothes before I leave work. This really works for me because it is harder to avoid the gym when I am already dressed and ready to sweat. Plus, who doesn't love letting off a little frustration at the gym after a hard day of work?
Ok. I don't love it either, but I do enjoy how I feel after a workout. I love knowing that I am building my endurance with each step on the treadmill and that I am slowly gaining muscle mass each time I do another strength training set.
The challenge part comes from constantly overeating after returning from the gym. While I am shedding a few hundred calories per workout, I am easily putting those calories back into my system through snacking and larger portions at dinner because I am so hungry after I leave the gym. I know it is important to properly fuel my body, so my next task is to learn how to replenish my calories through proper food choices pre and post-workouts. After all, in a few months it will be round two of "Ashley vs. the Bridesmaid's Dress."
