So much for the freshman 15. New research suggests that first-year college women who live with a roommate who is heavier than average gain less weight than the average freshman.

Kandice Kapinos from the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research suggested the results may be partly because heavier roommates tend to diet, exercise regularly or take weight loss pills, and the women living with them may follow suit.

Almost 150 female college freshmen were involved in the study, and they all gained half a pound on average by the end of the year.

"Our hope is that this line of research will have practical implications for university administrators and more generally for public health efforts aimed at reducing obesity," Kapinos said.
