The Biggest Loser kicked off Season 10 with a tour of seven American cities. Three contestants each were chosen from Detroit, Boston, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, Portland, Atlanta and Phoenix. In the first twist of the season, the three contestants at each location had to battle each other for only two seats in the limo to get to the ranch.

Each pre-selected contestant learned quickly they hadn't yet made it on the show. They had to compete against each other with either a one mile run or a 500-step challenge to continue on to the ranch.

Drama ensued as the contestants huffed and puffed their way to the end of the challenges. Most dramatic was Corey, 26, a life coach from Fairbanks, Ark., who collapsed during the one-mile run and wasn't able to complete it. Elizabeth, 30, a medical assistant from Boston appeared to have an asthma attack and couldn't finish her 500-step challenge. Both contestants were taken to the hospital for evaluation and we later learned they were both fine.

The contestants in general were thinner than in seasons past and by adding the physical challenge at the beginning, they made sure that they got the most "fit" contestants to the ranch. Does this mean that the challenges and workouts on the ranch will be even harder this season? Or have the producers been listening to the criticisms and picked contestants more appropriate for the rigorous training that is demanded of them?

Bob Harper, Jillian Michaels and Alison Sweeney took turns being on hand at the regional kickoffs to oversee the challenges and to lead locals through a workout of their own. The concept this season is "Pay It Forward" the show has pledged to work with communities to combat obesity. With two out of three people in the U.S. overweight or obese, it seems many places could use a hand. This season, the Biggest Loser is promising to focus on getting everyone healthy -- not just the the contestant at the ranch.

The contestants who made it on the ranch were placed into teams by the city they originated from. They are:

Orange/Detroit: Jessie, 27, 369 lbs. and Sophia, 28, 272 lbs.
Blue/Los Angeles: Adam 26, 402 lbs. and Ada, 27, 258 lbs.
Purple/Portland: Tina, 58, 263 lbs. and Burgandy, 35, 231 lbs.
Green/Atlanta: Rick, 54, 350 lbs. and Patrick, 27, 400 lbs.
Red/Phoenix: Jessica, 26, 282 lbs. and Mark, 30, 421 lbs.
Pink/Oklahoma City: Allie, 22, 322 lbs. and Lisa, 31, 288 lbs.
Black/Boston, Brendan, 32, 362 lbs. and Frado, 43, 367 lbs.

The last several minutes of the show featured season highlights. We learned that the eliminated contestants will be continuing at home although it wasn't clear if they'd have the chance to get back onto the ranch. Jillian and Bob were shown yelling, cajoling and hand-holding contestants and lots of contestants were featured in sweat-soaked T shirts struggling through their workouts.
