Vending machines have not exactly been known to hold nutritious snack options, and new research shows that these poor dietary choices could follow people throughout their lives.

According to a study by the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, students who eat food from vending machines have an increased risk for diabetes, coronary artery disease and other chronic conditions, as well as the likelihood to continue bad eating habits.

Results also found that a machine is used more often if it is located in the school cafeteria and can pack on as much as an extra 300 calories a day to a student's diet.

Visit AOL Health to find out just how prevalent vending machines are in schools across the country.

Chef Jamie Oliver started his "Food Revolution" in hopes of overhauling school lunches and teaching kids about healthy eating. This season he returns to tackle a Los Angeles obesity problem.
