In season one, Oliver's show debuted at No. 1 in its time slot and won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Programming.
Last season viewers watched as Oliver attempted to overhaul the school lunch program of Huntington, W.Va. Oliver started in the grammar schools, where he discovered the children couldn't even recognize a potato in its natural form. He began revamping the school lunch program with mixed results. Some parents rebelled by brown-bagging their children's lunches, and the children complained about the loss of their chocolate-and strawberry-flavored milk.
Oliver also jousted on-air with a popular local radio show host, DJ Rod Willis, whom he eventually won over. Oliver was viewed as a "British outsider" who had no business meddling with the city's problems. He eventually made some headway with local and state officials and received pledges of support to improve the school's lunch program. Oliver also gave cooking lessons from his downtown location of "Jamie's Kitchen," where he helped adults learn to cook healthier meals for themselves and their families.
While the crew was filming in Huntington, the series underwrote the cost of the healthier food in the school lunch program. After the show wrapped, school officials were quoted as wanting to delay the funding of the school lunch program, even though they had received enough money from private sources.
Do you think he will be able to make inroads in the big city of Los Angeles? Or do you think this is more good TV than community health initiative?
See why Oliver wants to change the world one plate at a time.
