It's long been known that eating right and exercising are the keys to a healthy lifestyle, but new science suggests physical activity also has the power to significantly reduce someone's predisposition to obesity.

The study found that people who carry gene variants that have been associated with obesity have a 40 percent lower chance of becoming severely overweight if they regularly exercise.

Fitness expert Dr. Pam Peeke told AOL Health that though genetics play a role in someone's inheriting a condition, lifestyle choices are even more important.

"Genetics may load the gun, but environment pulls the trigger," Peeke said. "You're doomed only by lifestyle habits. You're in full control. It's your choice."

Peeke also suggested fun physical activities for the whole family in the AOL Health story.
