For people with celiac disease, eating gluten-free food isn't just a choice, it's a necessity for a healthy life. But it turns out many of the products that claim to be naturally gluten free are actually contaminated with trace amounts of the protein.

Celiac disease causes sufferers to have an allergy to the protein gluten, found in wheat, barley and rye, and affects the immune system by preventing the body from absorbing essential nutrients.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reported that of the 22 grains marketed as gluten free that researchers analyzed, seven failed the Food and Drug Administration's standards for what qualifies as truly gluten-free.
