DVD Review: Dance Off the Inches - Dance It Off & Firm Up

The back cover of Dance Off the Inches: Dance It Off & Firm Up states, "Getting fit doesn't have to feel like work." I couldn't agree more -- I'm a big fan of finding a way to burn calories doing activities you truly love. And since I love to dance, I was excited to see what this workout had in store.
The video is comprised of four sections. There's a 13-minute step guide (which I didn't need, but if you tend to have a hard time following dance or aerobic moves, it wouldn't be a bad idea to check it out) and three dances. The first two dances utilize many of the moves from the step guide (the Chase and Whip It, Box and Shimmy, etc.), while the third focuses more on standard toning and dance exercises.
Level of Difficulty
Beginner.
Next Day Soreness
None.
Who's It For?
Those who enjoy lower-impact aerobics classes will find this right up their alley.

I liked the instructor, Bethany Lyons a lot -- she cued really well and was just peppy enough. The whole video had a really happy vibe, and everyone involved looked like they were having a blast. Although quite a few moves are introduced, they're easy to master, which means you spend less time trying to catch up and follow along and more time shaking your stuff and burning calories. The third dance showed some great moves that would be easy to incorporate into one's workout -- I'm a big fan of pliés and relevés for toning the calves and thighs.
Dislikes
I was a little disappointed in the dances themselves. Like I said, the moves were easy enough to follow, but they weren't moves I would ever do on a real dance floor -- they were more along the lines of what you would do in a fast-paced aerobics class. That being said, these moves didn't really get my heart rate up. It was more like a 44-minute warm-up for me, but for someone just starting out, that could actually be a really good thing.
Bottom Line
This wasn't quite enough of a workout for me, but it was cute and fun. I would have no problem loaning it to a friend who was just getting started on her fitness journey.
If you're looking for a dance workout that uses great moves and really gets you sweating, you might like this hip hop workout.
