DVD Review: Marisa Tomei Core & Curves

Posted on Jun 9th 2010 11:00AM by Kristen Seymour
When you hear the name Marisa Tomei, you probably think of one of her famous movie roles, such as "My Cousin Vinny," which is definitely my favorite. When you consider the fact that Tomei has been making films since 1984 and still looks absolutely amazing, it's obvious that she's got the diet and fitness thing down. But does that make her a good candidate to star in a fitness DVD?

Marisa Tomei Core & Curves is the actress' new workout DVD, which is divided into three sections: Body Definition (20 minutes) which incorporates light cardio and resistance training, Best Legs Workout (15 minutes) to target trouble zones on your lower half and Ten Moves in Ten (10 minutes) for a quick and effective workout. Tomei teams up with trainer Key Son -- he instructs and gives pointers while she demonstrates each move, occasionally offering tips or saying what she finds challenging about a particular move.

The DVD comes with a Gaiam toning band used in many of the moves (you can buy another one separately, too, if you want to work out with a friend). It gives you the option of doing just one part or all three in any order you like; additionally, you can opt to hear music with instruction or instruction only.

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate.

Next Day Soreness
Slight.

Who's It For?
Obviously, fans of Tomei will enjoy this. It's also great for those who like their workouts a bit more low-key -- it's not easy, mind you, but it's not high energy.

Likes
I did a lot of moves that I've never tried before while reviewing this DVD, which was great. The workouts feature lots of small motions, so they don't look nearly as impressive as they feel (because, trust me, you'll feel them). You might not end up gasping for breath like you would with some circuit training workouts, but you'll be awfully glad when each exercise ends. As I mentioned, this is a pretty low-key DVD, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it was nice to have a calm presence for a morning workout -- I don't need to be screamed at before my coffee. But personally, I had a hard time really "getting into" the workout because it was so calm.

Dislikes
There are a few exercises that require a great deal of space -- problematic for many of us without an enormous living room. Also, there are a lot of crunches. Like, a lot. Personally, I'd much rather do something else that works my core.

Bottom Line
This is a solid workout, no doubt about that, and I would have no qualms about recommending it to anyone who wanted to try it out. I'll definitely incorporate some of the moves I learned using the resistance band, but I'm not totally sure I'll do the whole DVD again.
