DVD Review: YogaWorks Fit Abs
Posted on Jun 2nd 2010 11:00AM by Kristen Seymour
Straightforward, easy-to-follow instruction is one of the hallmarks of YogaWorks, and YogaWorks Fit Abs is no exception. Challenging poses are combined with a relaxed attitude and solid cuing to provide a great yoga workout.
The DVD has two main segments -- a 10-minute Fit Abs workout that utilizes many of the standard abdominal workouts we all do, like crunches and bicycles, and Core Yoga Flow, which lasts 40 minutes. This part of the DVD is just what you would expect from the name -- you "flow" through various asanas, getting your heart pumping and muscles shaking.
Like other YogaWorks DVDs, a learning guide is included -- I can't recommend this feature enough for anyone who is new to yoga or at all unsure of the proper posture for the basic poses. It's not a bad refresher even for those who practice yoga regularly, either!
Level of Difficulty
Beginner in terms of how easy it is to follow, but there are intermediate and advanced moves.
Next Day Soreness
Moderate.
Who's It For?
Anybody who likes yoga will be sure to benefit from this DVD.

I found that the instruction was clear enough that I could follow along fairly easily even when a pose required me to be turned away from the TV or I was facing down -- I didn't realize how big a deal that was until now! Similar moves are utilized throughout the Core Yoga Flow, which makes it easy for beginners to pick up, but various asanas are mixed in with enough frequency to keep it from getting boring. I also liked the fact that, for a number of poses, variations were offered so those of us with a little less flexibility can still get a guided workout.
Dislikes
My only complaint is that, for being an abdominal workout, this didn't feel much more core-centric than a regular yoga workout (though, truthfully, yoga always works the core in a big way). Don't get me wrong -- it was a really good workout. I enjoyed it and my abs definitely felt it, just not as much as I expected.
Bottom Line
YogaWorks Fit Abs is a solid all-around yoga DVD -- you'll work all parts of your body, not just your abs. I think that's actually better than an abs-specific workout, but I would hate for you to buy it thinking it's 50 minutes of tummy toners only. This is one I'll certainly keep around.
I have to say, though, I think I liked YogaWorks Body Slim a bit better. Have you tried any of the YogaWorks DVDs? What did you think?
