DVD Review: 10 Minute Solution Ultimate Boot Camp

Posted on May 26th 2010 11:00AM by Kristen Seymour
"Boot camp" means different things to different fitness instructors when it comes to describing workouts. For some, it indicates that the workout will be incredibly tough, designed to weed out the weak and push the strong to their limits. To others, it has more to do with the kinds of exercises used -- think pull ups and planks as opposed to yoga- or dance-infused moves. And still to others, it's an excuse to wear camo and pretend to be mean. Yes, we've been to those classes, too. I was curious to see which column 10 Minute Solution Ultimate Boot Camp would fall into.

Just like all the other 10 Minute Solution DVDs I've tried out, Ultimate Boot Camp consists of five segments, each 10 minutes long: Fat Fighting Skills & Drills, Ultimate Upper Body Training, Ultimate Lower Body Training, Ultimate Total Body Training and Six Pack Ab Attack. Each segment includes a very short warm-up and cool down/stretch and the DVD allows you to program the segments as you like -- one at a time, all at once, or your pick of just a few, in any order you like.

This video is led by instructor Jessica Smith, who we've chatted with before (and whose style I really enjoy), so I had high hopes for this workout. Did it live up to my expectations?

Level of Difficulty
Intermediate.

Next Day Soreness
Moderate.

Who's It For?
Those who are looking for a solid workout without frills or fancy moves will enjoy this. However, some basic choreography (similar to doing sports drills) is included at a fairly quick pace, so you'll need at least a small amount of coordination.

Likes
I really liked the fact that, mixed in with the squats and lunges, there was a lot of creativity -- I did moves that I've never done before, and at this point, that's becoming more and more rare. The transition from one move to another was quick and well thought-out -- it really flowed. The cuing and instruction was excellent, and by the end of each section, I was breathing hard.

Dislikes
I had a little trouble with a few of the moves due to space. I have a reasonably large living room, but I still had to modify a few of the exercises in order to avoid hitting furniture. Don't get me wrong -- probably 85 percent of the exercises could be done in a small space, but keep in mind that you'll have to do your own version of a few of them.

Bottom Line
This is a good, solid workout -- it didn't blow me away, but I enjoyed it and would certainly do it again. I'll just move my furniture to the walls before I pop in the DVD next time!
