Paul and Shannon Morell struggled with infertility for years until 2006 when Shannon gave birth to Ellie and Megan, conceived via in vitro fertilization. But nothing could prepare them for the news they heard when the doctor at their clinic called them into his office three years later and days before their appointment to try for a third child.
Their doctor sat them down and told them that Shannon's frozen embryos had been implanted into another woman and that woman was pregnant. "I consider an embryo a baby," Shannon told AOL Health. "So when the clinic lost our embryos, it was like giving our child away to someone else and then saying, 'Oops. We made a mistake.'"
Shannon writes about her journey dealing with an embryo mix-up in her book "Misconception: One Couple's Journey from Embryo Mix-Up to Miracle Baby."
To read the conversation with Shannon -- from the day she found out about the mistake to her relationship with the woman carrying her child to the day her son was born -- check out AOL Health.
