Dylan Armajani: Run Past Your Goals and Find Yourself

well, it's definitely not an easy pose - you need fairly open shoulders & chest for this one to be even mildly relaxing! Even my students who have been practicing almost 2 years groan when I mention it!
I, too, cannot get on my knees, but I'm not tired or depressed. I thought the article MIGHT be interesting. However, it's just another example of how 'fit' and younger people have no understanding of aging, or arthritis. Which is not surprising as the medical profession do not seem to be much informed either, in my opinion. Example: it took an orthopedic surgeon just one x-ray to spot I had no cartilage left in one hip (yes, I saw the x-ray myself). Other medical personnel of various types would only say degenerative arthritis - tilted pelvis, etc. Of course, they made money off whatever 'diagnosis' & treatment was offered. Go to hss.edu (great hospital) for info. I now have a successful hip replacement - minimally invasive surgery. Thank you Dr. F.Boettner!
I am 82 y/o,hypothyroid (RAI treated) and have gained over 50 lbs after being 130-135 most of my life, COPD, emphysema, leaky heart, suspected fibromyalgia for 27 years. I become very annoyed at these exercises and such for the young, healthy people. There are many of us with stiff joints, shortness of breath and not much pep for vigorous exercise. What to do?
find a yoga teacher with experience in theraputic yoga -
I agree, many of the younger teachers the trainings are churning out nowadays haven't a clue what it is to be older & inflexible! I turned to teaching because of this - I've worked thru a lot of injuries & yoga isn't easy for me - but IT WORKS & has enriched my life!
Find a good teacher - older is better, & make sure they have yoga therapy experience!
Nancy,
I am 68 and a volunteer yoga teacher at our Senior Center. My 2 co-teachers are both over 90 (yes, ninety!). Our students range from 60 to nearly 100 and display most of the physical issues and limitations of people in that age group. But they also have the ATTITUDE that they will keeping moving and working with what abilities they still have, even if they must sit in a chair. So they come to class 3 days a week, regardless of the weather. And, most importantly, they arrive a half hour early to share hugs and a chat. Talk about keeping depression away! I am so inspired by these women!
