If you want to lower your risk of heart disease -- the key may be carboydrates.

A new study from Italy found that women who consumed a significant amount of high-glycemic carbs, like white bread, donuts and others sweets, had a greater risk of developing heart disease. This simple-sugar-packed diet increased blood glucose levels and triglycerides and reduced HDL, or the "good" cholesterol – all things that could lead to heart trouble.

Researchers suggest that the reason women face these consequences, and not men, has to do with differences in the way women metabolize simple sugars.
Low-glycemic diets high in fruit, veggies and whole grains, will not only help your heart but can improve diabetes symptoms, cholesterol levels and leave you feeling fuller, longer.

For details on the study, check out AOL Health. Wondering what exactly a low-carb diet looks like? That's Fit expert Jonny Bowden explains what it means.
