The "Fun Theory" Makes Exercise Easy

I was combing through the news this week looking for something to write about and a headline jumped out at me: "Excess Body Fat Alone Causes Over 100,000 Cancers in US Each Year."
Ah, I thought. Perfect.
But then I thought about it. Truth is, people who are obese already know it's not healthy. They don't need to hear more scary statistics. You'd have to be living under a rock not to know that there are huge health costs to carrying around excess weight, not to mention the agony and anxiety that being overweight causes millions of people. Everyone already knows obesity is a really bad thing. And no one consciously says, "Hey I think being fat is a really nifty idea, think I'll put that on my 'must-do' list."
So the better question is, what can we do about it?
Truth be told, people are sick and tired of hearing the same old prescription -- diet and exercise -- even though that's the only strategy that has a chance of working. Maybe it would be more useful and productive to look at creative ways we could actually make that strategy something more palatable than, say, a root canal.
And then I came upon the video I'm about to share with you. None of the people you'll see happily running and walking up stairs in this video were "told" they had to exercise. What this company did was create an environment in which being more active was actually fun, and called it the "Fun Theory." The video shows what can be accomplished with some creative thinking in a very small arena.
Can you imagine what could be accomplished if this kind of out-of-the-box thinking was applied to the problem of obesity and overweight on a national level?
And if that's too much to imagine, how about at the level of your own family?
What could you do to make healthy living more fun? What games could you invent? What competitions could you create? How could you get out of the mindset of "dieting" and "exercising" and into the mindset of play, energy and joy?
Watch this Fun Theory video. And then think about it.
