Review:

The Northpark YMCA is located on the Ft. Worth/Keller border in the Heritage area. This location features modern cardio and weight training equipment in an open format. In addition to the general exercise floor, there are several group fitness class offerings. Highlights of the group fitness program include the Les Mills Body Pump, spinning, and step aerobics classes. The yoga and pilates classes are less impressive because of limited resources, noise and environmental distractions.

The facility is small, but clean and modern with glass sculpture in the lobby and a decor highlighted by geometric design. Just beyond the main lobby is an area for members to relax, talk and enjoy a free cup of coffee. The staff at this location is friendly, accessible and knowledgeable. The overall tone is what you'd expect to find in a YMCA -- a multi-generational, positive focus on overall wellness.

Parents will likely be impressed with Childwatch, a child care facility for children ages 6 weeks to 7 years. The staff is kind and competent. There is also a Youthzone for older children (ages 8 - 12 years), which provides a supervised indoor area with fun activities like ping pong, air hockey jumping and kickboxing simulations. Make sure to check the child care schedule before heading to the gym, though. Childwatch and Youthzone are closed all afternoons and all day Sunday.

Another facility highlight is the child-friendly wading pool with cool water sprays and a twisting slide. At its deepest, the water is about four feet with a long sloping entry that is wonderful for non-swimmers. The actual swimming area and time is limited, however, by logistical factors like morning swim lessons, regular influxes of YMCA camp members that visit the pool daily and private swim lessons that often shut down entire sections of the pool.

Check out how to pick the right gym for you.
