Olympic Highlights: Great Day for USA as Vonn, Davis and White Take Gold

If Tuesday was a bit of a bummer for the US Olympic team, Wednesday was anything but with six of our athletes taking home medals, three of them gold.

Shani Davis, who previously made history by becoming the first African-American athlete to take home a gold medal in an individual sport when he competed in the Turin games, won the much-coveted top prize again after flying by the competition during the 1,000-meter Olympic speedskating event. He beat out South Korea's Mo Tae-bum, who took gold in the 500 meter event. America's Chad Hedrick came in third.

Then skier Lindsey Vonn helped hoist the States back to the very top of the medal race with a gold medal in the Ladies' Downhill Alpine Event. But what helped her overcome a badly-bruised shin and incredible pressure to take home the top prize? The LA Times reports that her winning performance was due to some friendly competition with fellow teammate Julia Mancuso, who she's been training with since childhood. After Mancuso nailed her run, Vonn was determined to do even better. But don't feel too badly for Mancuso -- she came in second and ended up with a medal of her own: Silver. Looks like all that training really paid off for Mancuso.

And in the least surprising news of the entire games thus far, snowboarder Shaun White -- also known as Animal or the flying tomato -- managed to win the gold medal in the Men's Halfpipe competition by soaring through the Vancouver skyline with amazing air and mind-boggling twists. Each participant had two chances at the course, and White did so well in the first one that he could have slid down the hill on his butt in his second go and still won the gold medal. Nonetheless, he put in a valiant effort the second time around and managed to get an even better score -- 48.4 out of 50. He was joined on the podium by teammate Scott Lago, who earned a bronze medal, and Finland's Peetu Piiroinen, who came in second.

One of our other favorites, Louie Vito, managed to come in fifth in the halfpipe after a pretty wicked second run -- check out what he had to say about the Olympics and his stint on "Dancing With The Stars."
