Olympic Highlights: Disappointment for Jacobellis, Another Canadian Gold

With heavy fog hitting the Vancouver area, the big news of the Olympic yesterday revolved around postponements. First, the Ladies Snowboarding Cross Finals were re-scheduled for later in the day due to poor weather conditions that were hampering the amazing efforts of American idols like Lindsey Jacobellis [pictured], Faye Gulini and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof. The competition eventually started, but the results were disappointing for Jacobellis and co. since none received medals. Jacobellis, who was favored to win, lost her balance in the semi-finals, and it's an especially heart-breaking blow for the 25-year-old after she took a tumble in the 2006 Turin Olympics too.
The poor visibility also lead to another major event being postponed. The Men's Super Combined Slalom Skiing event has been postponed until February 21, giving the athletes a few more days of nervous training.
Weather postponements are fair game when you're holding events outdoors, but it seems that NBC is getting a little frustrated with the constant changes to Olympic schedules, especially after Monday's 500 meter indoor speedskating event had to be re-scheduled due to problems with the ice. Let's hope these kind of kinks are being ironed out as the games progress.
But one success story of the day comes from our neighbors to the north. Host country Canada received their second gold medal when snowboarder Maelle Ricker took gold at the Snowboarding Cross final. The Canadians aren't used to getting gold medals, especially on home soil, so major celebrations are definitely in store.
Germany also had a success story to share after winning another gold medal in luge. This means that they've now usurped the USA as the leader in the medal race -- ouch.
