Kirstie Alley Stars in New Reality Series "Big Life"

Posted on Feb 10th 2010 12:00PM by Vanessa Voltolina
Remember when actress Kirstie Alley was all over the TV as the spokeswoman for the Jenny Craig diet? We do, and can't believe it's been four years since the celeb had her big weight loss reveal, gained it all back -- and then some -- ultimately quitting as the diet's spokesperson. Since then, Kirstie's been trying to get back on track, and using public pressure by way of talk shows as a primary means of motivation. Now, the actress will put her life -- and diet -- in the spotlight in a new A&E reality show, "Big Life," set to premiere mid-March.

"I think that we always see people -- the before and after -- but we don't really know what happens in between," said Kirstie Alley in the A&E preview (video below). "And the in between is really the meat and potatoes -- no pun intended." She then goes on to ask her kids if they are embarrassed by her weight, and tells the cameras that she thinks that "it's stupid to say I'm full figured. F*** you, I'm ****ing fat!" She says that she not only hates being fat, but wants to be the "skinny booty call, not the fat one."

Regardless of her past yo-yoing and dieting faux pas, Kirstie is incredibly self-aware -- and hilarious. But is self-awareness enough to get her on a healthy eating and exercise plan ... again?

"More and more research is showing that people actually respond to external motivations in weight loss," said nutrition expert and That's Fit columnist Jonny Bowden. "Making a bet, paying a penalty, winning a prize -- and the narcissism of doing it in the public eye -- is certainly a big motivator. The problem with making weight loss a spectator sport is that when the cameras are off, those motivated solely by the attention might find that the really hard work is yet to come and they might find it more challenging than they realize."

Bowden goes on to say that anyone can lose weight under the right circumstances, but the real challenge is maintaining it forever, especially when you're out of the limelight. "She hasn't done a great job of this before, which doesn't mean she won't this time," he said. "But I wouldn't take out a second mortgage to bet on it."

Will "Big Life" be the push Kirstie needs to drop the extra pounds for good? We'll have to wait until March to find out, but in the meantime, take a look at how latest "Biggest Loser" champ Danny Cahill is faring.
