GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical company that produces the weight-loss pill Alli, announced at this year's Sundance Film Festival that they will be funding a film about obesity in America. This is the first feature film to be fully-funded by a corporation, which begs the question: Isn't there a conflict of interest here?Alli, which contains orlistat, was the first diet drug of this kind to be approved by the FDA for sale without a prescription and over-the-counter in the U.S. It works by preventing some absorption of fat into the body, but has been reported to generate disturbing side effects, including oily spotting, loose stools and even liver damage.
Deborah Huso, an AOL Health writer, was on-hand at the festival to find out if GSK is really out for more sales. Check out what she found on AOL Health.
If you're considering taking a weight loss supplement, such as Alli, you need to know the benefits as well as the hidden dangers, risks and side effects.
