The Biggest Loser: Ranch Appendicitis

Last week's cliffhanger 911 call at "The Biggest Loser" ranch had nothing to do with a heart attack, but it did lead to surgery. After an appendectomy, the show goes on. Week 5 sparks flew as returning Blue and Yellow teams stepped head-to-head on the scale to weigh-in for a place at the ranch. Nothing like two new kids on the block to shake up established ranch alliances. Trainers got into everyone's head this week. Read on for a surprise challenge winner, healthy comfort food and one player who is shedding that funny, fat guy image.Yellow Wins. Blue team weighed in first and lost 9.92 percent at home. That wasn't enough as Sunshine and O'Neal lost 76 pounds combined for an 11.45 percent loss. "Now I have more than a black community, I got an obese community that I'd like to help when I help myself," said O'Neal. He shed 51 of those 76 pounds.
Blow Past Your Comfort Zone. Bob had Red's Melissa crying over challenging leg presses. As the tears fell, he reminded her that we need to push outside our comfort zone to discover new limits. If you're not supposed to be obese, you need to push yourself. The exchange had Melissa gutting out those presses to victory and inspired a more forgiving, accepting Bob. You can bet he still thinks she waterloaded early on, but it's time to move on.
Hit Your Burn. When dieting, we often count calories consumed, not burned. But beyond smart eating, the Biggest Loser formula is all about hitting a daily prescribed calorie burn. Miss it and weight loss won't be nearly as monumental. Consider setting a calorie burn goal some days instead of strictly monitoring calories. If you're always burning 400 a workout, can you put in the sweat for 650? Jillian suspected that's why young Daris isn't losing at the big-guy rate, and he confirmed it -- he's 1,500 calories short of his burn with an allegedly similar workout. Daris shared he'd always been heavy -- the fat, funny guy who went home alone. In a breakthrough moment, Daris's self-esteem jumped when he embraced his amazing 51 pounds lost to date. Let's see if this bump in self-esteem shows up on the scale.
Biggest Guy Wins One. In a "Rudy" moment, the dark horse Michael won a tackling football challenge for immunity. The women's smaller weights put them out of contention on this one, Pink came in last for a 2-pound disadvantage at the weigh-in. Michael attributed his win to the steady rhythm of 1980s music blaring inside his head -- remember Season 6's Back to the 1980s week? Maybe you'll run a faster 5K with few '80s tunes in the mix.
13-Mile Walk After Appendectomy. Miggy's abdominal pain ended up an appendectomy. She walked 13 miles around the ranch the next day, then 18 miles, then 14 miles. Let's see if the estimated eight-to-nine pounds of fluids added during surgery show up on the scale. She's stubborn and tough, which keeps her above the yellow line.
Who's Your Training Partner? Hopefully your workout partner cheers as loud as Purple's Stephanie. She had a row of contestants on treadmills running faster and longer than ever. You can chat with your best friend anytime, align yourself with gym rats that intensify your efforts.

You'll cut your calories in half if you replace ground beef with extra lean ground turkey breast, says Bob. Healthy food can taste great. Jennie O's lean ground turkey breast sales have to be on the upswing after advertising on the show. Contestants whipped up this black bean turkey chili that rivaled at-home comfort foods. Yoplait's all-in-one frozen smoothie looked tasty. Open the pouch and pour in frozen fruit, add skim milk, then blend. Bob says one serving has just 220 calories, a perfect gym frontload. You can also get creative with your own combinations of frozen fruit, a few spoonfuls of non-fat plain yogurt and skim milk.
Yellow's return also meant immunity at the final weigh-in. Miggy pulled off a miracle and stayed above the yellow line by losing five pounds. Daris's newfound confidence and energy had him down 12 pounds. Sam broke through his personal barrier of 318 pounds and now sits at 310. Biggest Loser contestants prove it's never too late to blast through your weight barrier. Red's Lance and Melissa narrowly missed an elimination vote after John lost six pounds and gained immediate elimination. He's back home playing basketball with his brother, gunning for his first martial arts belt and overjoyed he can move again after nearly weighing 500 pounds. "I was afraid to get my heart beating," said John. He said working out is no issue now and he's taken full responsibility to change his morbidly obese habits by eating right and mixing up his exercise. He's lost 104 pounds toward a 200s goal by the finale -- good luck recognizing him on stage.
See you next week as contestants don fluffy, matching down jackets and light a torch before entering the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado. Bob and Jillian will be in state-of-the-art training heaven -- doubt they'll have contestants Curling though.
