Olive Garden Salad and Breadsticks: How Many Calories?

How Many Calories Posted on Jan 27th 2010 11:30AM by Bev Sklar
The unlimited salad and breadsticks Olive Garden offer every night has to be a better choice than fried calamari or some other gooey, cheesy dip for an appetizer. Right? Well, it depends on how far you take their promise of "unlimited." Let's take a closer look at how many total calories in one serving of Olive Garden's Garden-Fresh Salad (with dressing) and one breadstick (with garlic-butter spread) has.

Just one breadstick and serving of salad is packed with 500 calories. Don't blame that high number on the breadstick, though -- this warm, fluffy carbohydrate has 150 calories, significantly less than the 350-calorie serving of tossed salad. Sure, you can trim calories by ordering no dressing or croutons, but Olive Garden plops down one large salad bowl and a big basket of breadsticks for the table to dig into, making this special order more difficult.

If you're trying to lose a few, pass on pre-meal temptations like bottomless salad and breadsticks and the freebie chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants. If you do dine at Olive Garden, check out their Garden Fare menu, which is more diet-friendly. The Linguine alla Marinara for lunch has only 310 calories and 4 grams of fat.

If you regularly exercise self-control and wrap up half your entree to take home, reconsider eating those leftovers in front of the TV.
