Gold's Gym South Boston is located in "Southie's" West Side. There is a parking lot available for members, but the lot is usually full during peak hours (5-7 p.m.) and weekends, requiring you to park on the street. Dorchester Avenue offers plenty of spots and does not require a resident sticker. However, you cannot park here during a snow emergency.
The locker rooms are clean and spacious. There are three showers available with individual stalls and curtains. Each locker room also has a small sauna. There are several locker sizes available to fit all your gear. Towels can be rented for a dollar and are not very big.
The gym is a remodeled garage with an open floor plan. There are very high ceilings and exposed brick walls lined with tall windows letting in lots of light during the day. There are about 15 treadmills, elliptical machines and stationary bikes. There are also four Stairmasters and two rowing machines. Even during peak hours, there is rarely a wait for a machine. It is very crowded at this time, but the open floor plan and abundance of machines make it possible to get through your workout without waiting.
There are many free weights, flat benches and weight machines throughout the gym. There is a separate weight room for women only. This is usually not crowded and has free weights, flat benches, and other weight machines. There is also a section with mats for stretching and abdominal work.
Gold's Gym South Boston offers many classes at all times of the day. There is a separate spinning studio, as well. The classes are included in your membership. The instructors are enthusiastic and offer effective workouts. The classes are usually crowded after work, so it is suggested you arrive early. The staff is friendly and helpful. They also offer personal training for a fee and the trainers are professional and knowledgeable. The crowd is mostly young professionals living in South Boston. Overall this is a great gym at a great value.
