Weight Watchers vs. Jenny Craig Lawsuit

It's a battle of the bulge-blasters as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, the two biggest weight loss companies in America, go head-to-head in a lawsuit claiming that Jenny fabricated statements in a recent TV commercial. As you can see, the ad features Jenny Craig spokesperson Valerie Bertinelli in a lab coat touting the success of the Jenny Craig program. "Jenny Craig clients lost, on average, over twice as much weight as those on the largest weight-loss program," she said, referring to Weight Watchers. And as you might guess, Weight Watchers didn't like that one bit.

"The Jenny Craig advertisements are false," Weight Watchers said in the Seattle Times. "Jenny Craig did not conduct 'a major clinical trial' comparing its product with the Weight Watchers program." What's more, they're claiming that the Jenny Craig study referred to was conducted 10 years ago.

New York-based company Weight Watchers wants the ads to stop running, but that's not all -- they' also want Jenny Craig to run corrective ads, pay punitive damages and forfeit any profits from the ads. They feel the false claims couldn't have come at a worse time, since January is a "critical time for weight-loss companies," said the lawsuit, which was filed on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. Jenny Craig hasn't commented yet.

Both the Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig programs have their successes and failures, so it seems the corporate name-calling is unnecessary. Who do you side with on this one?
