Jersey Shore's Snooki Battled An Eating Disorder

Posted on Jan 20th 2010 2:00PM by Vanessa Voltolina
After being mocked by Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino for her "rolls" on last week's episode of MTV's "Jersey Shore," Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi confessed to The Insider about her former battle with an eating disorder, reports "Us Weekly."

After learning that "Jersey Shore" co-star Jenni "JWOWW" Farley is on an extreme diet of only 500 calories per day, it's sad -- but almost not surprising -- that yet another cast member also has a painful dieting past.

"In high school, I really wouldn't eat," said Snooki. "I would only have lunch, and I would only have salads. It got so crazy that I would only eat a cracker or a cucumber a day and I would feel full."

The reality star said she "would go into the nurses office every day and I would weigh myself. When [the school nurse] realized that I hit 80 pounds, she was like, 'This isn't good.'" The nurse notified her parents, who told Snooki that "You need to eat, this is very dangerous."

It was at that point she gained weight back, bringing her to 98 pounds, "where I always was," she said.

While Snooki's petite 4-foot 9-inch frame does mean that she needs to be extra vigilant with her diet and workout routine, 98 pounds is right on track for where a woman of her height should be, giving Snooki a body mass index of 21.2, which is right in the middle of the "healthy" range on the BMI scale.

Of course, it's not easy being shoved into the spotlight and having your body scrutinized by magazines, blogs and fans. As celebrities prove over and over again, with their diet slip-ups and fad dieting.

"Now that Snooki is subject to the public eye, she may feel a new pressure to live up to the unrealistic standards of Hollywood beauty," warns That's Fit nutrition expert Tanya Zuckerbrot, founder of SkinnyintheCity.com. "For someone like Snooki with a history of eating disorders, her sudden fame may be a catalyst for her to fall back into old habits."

We're hoping Snooki will maintain a positive body image in the face of her newfound fame. We're giving her a big fist pump for ditching her dangerous habits and getting healthy.
