Half Their Size! Two Women Reveal Wake-Up Calls

Sure, we love watching contestants on the "The Biggest Loser" ditch those unwanted pounds. Eating only wholesome foods and working out five or six hours a day with trainers screaming for you to drop and give them 20 definitely works. But how about the rest of Americans who have a lot of weight to lose on their own -- like, half of their body weight?

People Magazine's current "Half Their Size" issue features men and women who have done just that.

Without the use of supplements, surgeries or last chance workouts, six individuals featured in the magazine are now half the person they used to be -- literally. And while drastic measures work for some, these people did it with a more realistic approach: Diet and exercise.

"We get used to seeing reality television versions of how to lose weight where people go and spend time in a special camp and they have trainers and nutritionists," People senior editor, Galina Espinoza, told the Today Show. "These are people who in their everyday lives spent years figuring out how to eat again, how to exercise -- reprogramming themselves."

One of the women, 25-year-old Natalie Blackburn, spent most of her life being overweight and known as the "fat kid." She weighed 200 pounds by the time she reached fifth grade and topped out at 340 pounds in high school. Admitting that her eating habits were terrible, Natalie said on the Today Show, "I'm from the South, and eating is a way of life and we all enjoy it. I never learned those really good core values of how to eat well and work out."

Her wake-up call came on a humiliating day at the amusement park when the safety bar wouldn't close around her stomach and she had to get off the ride in front of dozens of strangers. After that, Natalie vowed to get fit. She started with an online support system which allowed her to track calories and chat with fellow dieters. She also joined a gym and learned how to eat right. Now, two years later, Natalie has lost an incredible 177 pounds.

Fifty-one-year-old Diana Cantu can relate. Even when the scale reported a whopping 333 pounds, it wasn't until she couldn't fit into her chair at work that Diana decided to do something about her weight. "It was very disconcerting and depressing," she remembered feeling in front of her co-workers. Confessing that she too, didn't know how to eat right -- or cook, Diana turned to Jenny Craig for help. The meal plans and counseling were just what she needed.

"Jenny Craig worked for me, because the food is so good and easy to prepare," Diana said. "I needed the support system. The hardest thing for me was humbling myself and asking for help." She cut her diet from 5,000 calories a day down to a healthy amount and began walking all over her Austin neighborhood. And she wasn't the only one to benefit from a newer and healthier outlook either -- her 16-year-old son also joined in and lost 108 pounds.

Now, 191 pounds lighter, Diana said she feels "fantastic." She's spending more time with her family, golfing and even rock climbing!
