Pull-Up Bars: Which One is Right for You?

If you're serious about strengthening your back, shoulders, biceps and abs, using a pull-up bar can be very effective. There are several types of pull-up bars to choose from including at-home models and ones found at a gym. The type you choose should be safe, stable, easy to use and comfortable. Some even offer multiple uses for other exercises.

The Everlast Multi Function Chinning Bar is designed to be used in a doorway without any bolts or screws. It can also be used on the ground or against a wall for push-ups and sit-ups. For pull-ups, it fits most standard doorways up to 32 inches and offers multiple grip locations for pull-up variations. Its price starts at $32.77.

The Universal Door Mount Pull-Up Bar also fits easily over most door frames without any screws. There are two models to choose from: The Classic UD6 and the New Generation UD6. The Classic is $64.95 and offers 28 inches of foam covered grip, while the New Generation is priced at $74.95 and offers 46 inches of foam covered grip. Either model fits a standard four inch overhead trim, and you can also purchase "L arms" for wider trimmed doorways.

Crossfit provides pull-up bars at their gyms. These tend to be larger bars that many people can use at one time. They are typically made from steel, customized to the space and welded to the wall. The bars are strong and don't provide any flex when several people are on them, and they are positioned six to eight feet off the ground.
