Looking to lose a few pounds or improve you mood? Lace up your trainers because running is one of the best ways to get into shape and to stay healthy. Along with building bone density and thus decreasing the risk of osteoporosis, running also been shown to ease depression, relieve stress and perhaps most importantly, help shed weight.

  • Cost: $60 - $100 for a good pair of running shoes.
  • Time Commitment: How often you run will obviously depend on your goals. For heart health benefits, three weekly runs should do the trick. Otherwise, if you want to lose weight or even train for a competitive event like a 5K, you'll need to run more.
  • Location Limitations: All you need is a treadmill or some open space!
  • Special Equipment Required: A good pair of running shoes. A stop watch is also recommended.
  • Potential Pitfalls: N/A.
  • Boredom Rating: Can vary, depending on whether you're running on a treadmill or in a park. Listening to music can help decrease boredom potential.
  • Potential Injury Risk: Because running is so high-impact, those with back or knee injuries or osteoporosis should avoid running. Having a good pair of shoes can also help prevent injury.
