BMI is NEVER, EVER an appropriate means of measuring children, because their growing bodies are constantly changing. Some children sprout up before filling out, and others get chunky before their height catches up. If you go by a BMI chart, the difference between "normal" and "obese" can be just a few pound in young children. The only way to get an accurate picture is to use growth-curve charts which measure height and weight progression over months and years. A BMI "snapshot" is next to worthless as a diagnostic tool, and carries a great deal of potential for misuse.
