The theory behind Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michael's latest book is that eating certain unhealthy foods disrupts your hormonal balance, which in turn increases levels of hormones in the body that cause weight gain, as well as block weight loss. By eating following Jillian's plan, the logic is that you can change your hormone levels and repair your metabolism by removing the toxins you're eating and exposed to.
The program is divided into three steps: Remove, Restore and Rebalance. In Step One (Remove), dieters eliminate any foods that contain any harmful, hormone-affecting 'antinutrients' (as they are referred to in the book) such as hydrogenated fats, refined grains, artificial sweeteners and colors, and preservatives. It's also recommended that you remove other harmful toxins -- including cleaning products, certain plastics, non-stick cookware and artificial room deodorizers -- because of the hormone-imbalancing chemicals and hazardous chemicals they contain. In Step Two (Restore), dieters load up on healthy foods that affect hormones positively, including nuts and seeds, berries, legumes and organic meats and dairy. Finally, in Step Three (Rebalance), dieters are told three basic principles: Eat every four hours, eat until full, but not stuffed, and eat meals that roughly contain 40 percent carbs, 30 percent protein and 30 percent fat (which is the same formula as the Zone Diet).
